25 points total

1. (5 points) Mass Spectrometry (MS) appears to be a useful technique. Why develop sensors (such as
those described in the Lu or Suslick research) when MS will do the same job? Give at least two
reasons.

2. (5 points) During the lectures we saw demonstrations of sensors that were either totally non-
selective or totally selective. Explain. Where is each type useful?

3. (15 points) One theme of the lectures was the use of analytical chemistry to address environmental
or health issues, such as CO2 in the atmosphere or lead in paint. Chose another environmental/health
issue, not discussed in the lectures, and describe (briefly) how you might use analytical chemistry or
an analytical technique to address it.
