Chemistry 315

Preliminary Assignment

Template Assignment
Since you will be following a template for lab reports this semester, we want to familiarize you
with the format before writing a full report. You are responsible for using the Lab Report
Template and following the Lab Report Guidelines in all lab reports, which can be found on
Compass.
You will submit a practice report to show that you have mastered the template. The title
should be Experiment 0: Practice Report.
o Include headers (Keywords, Introduction, Experimental Details, Data and Results,
Discussion, References).
o Under each header include a brief description of the desired content for that
section in your own words. No credit will be given for descriptions copied
directly from the template.
Special Instructions for each section:
o In the Keywords section, provide a brief description of how keywords should be
chosen and provide five examples.
o Duplicate the equations presented below in Microsoft Equation Editor into the
Data and Results section following the description.
o Insert your ChemDoodle structures into the Data and Results section following
the equations.
o After your description of the desired section content in the Discussion section,
write a brief summary for ONE of the papers found in the library search. Be sure
to cite the original paper in the proper format. No footnotes.
o Write citations for the papers found in the library search in the References section.
Be sure to use ACS format.
o In Supplemental Material include a table and a graph. See the template and lab
report guidelines for proper table and graph format.
The table should have three columns, listing the names of the non-
radioactive halogens, their atomic symbols, and their atomic weights.
To practice with graphs, plot the boiling points of the non-radioactive
halogens vs their molecular weights. This should be a scatter plot, not a
line plot.

Microsoft Equation Editor

Listed below are some equations from your experiments. Using the Microsoft Equation Editor
3.0 or a similar program, re-write these equations. These equations can then be used later, via
copy and paste, to write the lab reports if needed.
The Microsoft Equation Editor can be accessed through Microsoft Word via Insert-> Object
->Microsoft Equation 3.0. If Microsoft Equation 3.0 is not listed in the list of objects that can
be inserted into a document, then it needs to be installed. Consult the Help documentation
provided with Microsoft Word (F1 or Help menu) to determine how to install the equation editor
as this is dependent on the version of Word being used and the availability of the installation CD.

ChemDraw
Draw the structures of the following using ACS settings. To change settings: Go to File -> Apply
document settings from -> ACS document 1996
1. EDTA4-
2. 4-Anilino-4'-nitroazobenzene
3. Anthracene
Additional assignment for ChemE students:
4. In oil refineries, a major transformation is the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene
to biphenyl and hydrogen sulfide. Draw this conversion as a balanced reaction.
5. In microelectronics, important processes involve silane; draw its atomic structure.
6. In polymer science, nylon-66 is used for applications requiring high mechanical strength
and rigidity. Draw the structure of its repeat unit, showing all atoms.

Library Search
Using the databases (Scifinder, Web of Science, etc.) found on the chemistry library website
(www.library.illinois.edu/chx/), find examples of articles that meet the following criteria (1
article for each topic):
Gold Nanoparticles
DNAzyme
Proteomics
