At each of these 4 IEP meetings, they dealt with initial placement or annual review. The
initial placement IEPs seem to be more formal and the parents seem really nervous and
concerned about the process. The annual review meetings the parents appear to be more
seasoned and know what to expect. The staff knows the family and the needs of the student.

During the initial placement it is requested to conduct testing by the school psychologist.
If the testing has already been completed then the school psychologist discusses the results. The
IEP team then comes together to create obtainable goals for the student. All members present
sign the attendance sheet and the Special Education Case Manager conducts the meeting and
tries to keep the meetings running on time.

The special education staff and the IEP team have a great rapport with one another and
they know how to conduct the meeting. They are all knowledgeable in their field of study and
can portray information to the parents to allow the student to be successful at home as well as in
school. The staff gives suggestions on things to try with the student and the teacher shows work
examples and gives additional information. I love that the meetings always starts off informal
and allows for time for the parents to relax. They always start off with something positive about
the student and helps the parent become more at ease.

I had these students in my general education classroom and they were always successful
at achieving or exceeding their goals. Sometimes modifications had to be made to the goals
during the IEP process or goals needed to be created when they were entering an IEP.
