Dees/Graham Timeline

All census references unless noted are Pulaski County Georgia.

1780
William Billy Barefoot (the older) born

1785
Green G. Graham born (may be father of Daniel, G W and John)

Elizabeth Dees/Deas/Graham born (E. S Graham) wife of William Billy Barefoot (the older)
may be mother of Daniel. This is consistent with her birthdate shown on the 1850 Census.

Edgefield County, SC formed from Old 96th District in SC.

1790
There was a John Dees as well as a Shade Deas in Edgefield District (old 96), S. C. (the place
where Daniel went to sell the slave). Apparently settlers from North Carolina stopped in
Edgefield on the way south into Georgia. There were no Barefoots in S.C. but in 1790 there
were 4 named Barefoot in Edgecomb County N.C.

1800
John Graham (overseer) on Lampkin plantation is born in Georgia.

I suspect John Graham could be brother of Daniel and G.W Graham (older). I suspect that
Green G. Graham born in 1785 is the father of Daniel Graham, G. W. Graham (older) and
John Graham. The Green G. Graham family is where Elizabeth (E S Graham) lived in 1850,
after her husband and stepson died. Green might also be a brother in-law to Elizabeth.

1801
Daniel Graham born (probably in Richmond county Georgia which is near Augusta), son of
Elizabeth Dees & Husband #1. She is about 16 yers old.

(Elizabeth will later marry William Billy Barefoot (the older) Husband 2 in 1813)

1806
Martha Patsy Daniels (Graham) wife of Daniel Graham, born

1810
G. W. Graham (older) born in Richmond county Georgia. Probably he is Daniels brother. And
this indicates that Elizabeth was still married to Graham when she was age 25. Graham died
in either Richmond county Georgia or Edgefield county S.C. need to find a will.

1810 Sept. 15

Jordan Dees marries Nancy Mason

1811
Miles Barefoot Born
1813
Elizabeth Dees married William Billy Barefoot (the older) 10-13-1813 in Richmond County
Georgia (Augusta area) Husband # 2. She is about 28 years old.

Elizabeth Barefoot born. She will marry Elisha Hodge who will administer the estate of
William Billy Barefoot (the older) making it appear that Elizabeth was the daughter of
William Billy Barefoot (the older).

1815
William Barefoot (the younger) is born.

1818
Tax list shows John Dees with nine slaves and Jordan Dees for the Estate of James Dees with
7 slaves. James Dees could have been husband of Elizabeth as well. Note Daniels first son
was named James. Slaves cost $1,000 to $2,000 each, the Dees were rather well off.

1820
Census William Billy Barefoot (the older): William Barfoot male under 10, male 10-16, male
16-18, male to 26, male over 45, females 1 under 10, 2 (10-16) one over 45

Marry Graham appears on the census of Pulaski as head of household with 2 males (20-30) 2
males under 5, 2 males (70-80), 2 females under 5, 2 females (15-20) I would take this to
indicate that Marry is a male. Marry was in Lincoln N.C in 1800

1821 April 3
Jordan Dees marries Jinny Bush

1822 Dec 18
Daniel Graham marries Martha Patsy Daniel in GA

1827
Daniel Graham appears in GA land lottery

1828
Miles Barefoot born 1811 in S.C married Elizabeth Broxton of Pulaski. Another researcher
says that Miles is brother of Charity Barefoot who married James Holland in Pulaski.

Daniel Grahams first son is born, he is named James.

1830
Census shows Nancy Graham (probably widow) about age 20-30 living with female age 70-
80 next door to Green G. Graham

Census shows Miles Barfoot, William Barefoot (the younger) and William Barefoot (the
older)

1833
Daniel Grahams first daughter born, named Sarah, probably for her mother Martha.

1833 Nov. 11
Elizabeth Ann Barefoot (born about 1813) marries Elisha Hodges. Elizabeth is ancestor of
Betty J. Smith
1834
Daniel names daughter Elizabeth. It also appears that this is the year that John Allen (Jack)
was born. I do not think they were twins so likely the dates are guesses.

1836
Daniel names 2nd son John. This is probably the true date for Jacks birth

1837
Daniel Names daughter Shedrick, identified in census as a male. Will later marry a George
Unknown.

1838
Daniel names a 3rd son G. W. Graham (younger). Presumably after the G.W. Graham (older)
who appears as head of a household on the 1840 census making one think that Daniel and
G.W are brothers or at least related.

1840
Daniel Graham paroled from jail.

Census shows a B Barefoot and two houses away a W Barefoot. There is also a M. Barfoot
(Miles)

Census also shows D. Graham (Daniel), G.W Graham and a G. G. Graham (Green G.) G. G
Graham is the person who will be shown with E.S. Graham in 1850. E.S is female age 65 and
is presumed to be Elizabeth (Granny Barefoot) in 1850.

1842
Daniel Graham steals male Negro slave in Georgia and takes him to SC to sell.

While in SC Daniel marries daughter of Abraham Hurt.

1842 November
William Billy Barefoot (the older) age about 62 goes to SC looking for Daniel Graham, his
stepson, and is murdered by his Daniel Graham, in Edgefield South Carolina.

1843
Daniel Graham is arrested for and charged with stealing a Negro Slave. Daniel admits to
murdering William Barefoot.

1843 April 9
Daniel is sentenced to 9 years in prison in GA for stealing the Negro Slave.

1844 January 22
Daniel is pardoned in GA and sent to SC to stand trial for murder.

1844 March
Daniel is transferred to SC and stands trial for murdering William Barefoot, shows sheriff the
place the body is hidden.
May 24 1844
Daniel is hanged in S.C. for murder of Billy Barefoot. Newspaper says that on the gallows he
admits that Abraham Hurt helped him murder William Billy Barefoot (the older).

1845 January 1
Fi Fa writ against the property of Daniel Graham, sold to satisfy debts. Wife Martha was the
sole bidder paying $3.50 for 202.5 acres of land. This may have been to pay court costs or
restitution for theft of slave.

1845 January 28
The property of William Billy Barefoots (the older) is sold on Pulaski County, GA courthouse
steps, to settle estate and pay debts of estate. Sale is administered and conducted by the
presumed son in-law, Elisha Hodges, serving as Administrator of estate.
1847 Missouri Hart born

1850
Census shows Martha Graham wife of Daniel Graham living with her family as head of
household.

1860
Martha Graham shown on census living with 3 grown sons on farm.
John Graham age 60 shown as overseer on plantation of James L. Lampkin. Lampkin had 50
slaves in 1860 and farm valued at about $60,000.

1870
John Allen Graham had a place worth more than one would expect for the post Civil war Era.

1870
Martha gone from census (she died July 25 1870) but a Miles Graham born about 1862 is
living with Willis and Elmyra Cason. Curious that the name Miles seems to have crossed
over from the Dees family.

1873 Missouri Hart married John Graham

1875 Martha E. Graham daughter of John Allen (Jack) born she could have known Granny
Barefoot.
1880 1885
Granny Barefoot (Elizabeth) dies on front porch in rocker with a corncob pipe in her mouth
per Mamie Davis Jones account of family lore.

Note: Strange that no record can be found for grandma Barefoot from 1860 to her death. She was
said to be about 100 years old and appears to have been born in 1785 in Georgia. Note by Margot

1906 Mammy Nig born

1932 Missouri Hart died
