Biography
ChalybuswasbornatPfaffrodainSaxony.ForsomeyearshetaughtattheknightacademyinDresden,and
wonahighreputationbyhislecturesonthehistoryofphilosophyinGermany.In1839hebecameprofessorin
KielUniversity,where,withtheexceptionofonebriefinterval,whenhewasexpelledwithseveralcolleagues
becauseofhisGermansympathies,heremainedtillhisdeath.

Hisfirstpublishedwork,HistorischeEntwicklungderspekulativenPhilosophievonKantbisHegel(1837,5th
ed.1860),whichstillranksamongthebestexpositionsofmodernGermanthought,hasbeentwicetranslated
intoEnglish,byAlfredTulk(London,1854),andbyAlfredEdersheim(Edinburgh,1854).Hischiefworksare
EntwurfeinesSystemsderWissenschaftslehre(Kiel,1846)andSystemderspekulativenEthik(2vols.,1850).

HeopposedboththeextremerealismofHerbartandwhatheregardedastheonesidedidealismofHegel,and
endeavouredtofindameanbetweenthem,todiscovertheidealorformalprinciplewhichunfoldsitselfinthe
realormaterialworldpresentedtoit.HisWissenschaftslehre,accordingly,dividesitselfinto

1.Principlehre,ortheoryoftheoneprinciple
2.Vermittelungslehre,ortheoryofthemeansbywhichthisprinciplerealizesitselfand
3.Teleologie.

ThemostnoticeablepointisthepositionassignedbyChalybustotheWorldEther,whichisdefinedasthe
infiniteintimeandspace,andwhich,hethinks,mustbepositedasnecessarilycoexistingwiththeInfinite
SpiritorGod.ThefundamentalprincipleoftheSystemderEthikiscarriedoutwithgreatstrengthofthought,
andwithanunusuallycompletecommandofethicalmaterial.
