The authors were undergraduate students of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and the thesis served

as their final requirement on the program.

-The author used one-way ANOVA testing which is the appropriate statistical method in determining
if there is or there is no significant difference on the antibacterial capability of Madagascar periwinkle.
The statistical method was followed by Tukeys pairwise post-hoc test in the identification of the pair
that has significant difference.

-The statistical evidence presented was accurate and supported the conclusion that Catharantus
roseus has an antibacterial action. Based from the data presented by the group using erythromycin as
control and the microorganisms of experiment (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), it was
found out that antibacterial action of the crude extract of Catharantus roseus could somehow be
limited to some microorganisms. Though they have proven that sample has antibacterial
characteristics which they have been concluded , however, the sample itself has its own limitations
which is justified by the statistical methods used (One- way ANOVA followed by Tukeys pairwise
post-hoc test)hence, validating that the the statistical methods used is accurate enough to point out
these extent.

- The author built a logical argument because they coherently presented their conclusion supported
by their statistical data to attain their objectives proving the potency of the Madagascar periwinkle
against bacterial infection.

- On one hand, based on the post-hoc statistical evidence, the effects of the different concentrations
of periwinkle against Escherichia coli is not as effective as Staphylococcus. Hence, the crude extract
needs synergy in order to achieve the same effect with Staphylococcus aureus.

- The evidences and articles used as references were still valid and contribute to the success of the
experiment.

- Nonetheless, the researchers were successful in clearly presenting both the data and statement
leading to a coherent conclusion

Conclusion:

We therefore conclude that the study was presented rationally by the use of proper statistical
treatment. By utilizing the One-way ANOVA, the study come up with the decision that there is no
significant difference in Antibacterial effect of the crude extract from the Madagascar Periwinkle
leaves as compared with the commercially available antibacterial drugs. Furthermore, they were
able to compare the antibacterial activity of the crude extract in different microorganisms namely:
Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Recommendations:
1. Test the crude extract of Madagascar periwinkle with different microorganisms

2. Combining the crude extract with a synergy to further stimulate the antibacterial action

3. Use different control rather than erythromycin.

4. Correlation method can be done to see whether there is a strong or weak relationship between the
concentration of the crude extract and its antibacterial activity.
