Are You or Someone You Know Suffering From Lower Back Pain?
Northwestern University is seeking volunteers who have lower back pain in order to determine
where the pain is recognized in the brain. Participants will also be evaluated to determine why
pain goes away for some people while it remains for others. This is a 12 month study consisting
of 1 visit at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and 5 MRI scans at Northwestern Memorial
Hospital’s Olson Pavilion. All visits will take place in downtown Chicago.
Eligible participants must: • Be 18 years or older

• Have a history of lower back pain which began 4-16 weeks
ago with pain radiating into the buttocks or legs
• Be able to undergo a MRI (no pacemakers, metallic implants,
or spinal implants)
