CORROSION RISK ASSESMENT

Is defined as a decision making technique for inspection planning based or risk comprising the
probability and failure and consequence.

Evaluation of risks

The purpose of evaluating risks is to identify the extent of the risk and decide whether exist precautions
are adequate or whether more need.

*How likely they are to happen (likelihood).

*Consequences if an accident happens- (severity)

Likelihood

When predicting the likelihood of an accident happening we should take into account the control
measures that are already in place.

Risk rating = Likelihood x severity (consequences)

Use a risk matrix to calculate an overall risk rating for your specific hazard.

Factors affecting likelihood ( Corrosion factor Fc).

Fc = 10/DL (DL- CA/CR)

*DL = design life (years) (20 years)

*CA= corrosin allowance (i.e 3 mm)

CR = corrosion rate (0.5 mm/year)

For condensate hydrocarbon piping system Fc= 7

Severity (consequences Foc = overall consequence factor)

Foc( maximum value 10) = Fh (maximum value 4) + Fe(maximum value 3) + Fo (maximum value 3)

Fh = safety consequence factor

Fo = operability consequence factor

Fe = environmental consequence factor

X=hazard factor weight; it represents the max. value of safety consequence

Y= operability factor weight ; it is the max. value of operability consequence factor.

Z= environmental factor weight ; it is max. value of environmental consequence factor.

X+Y+Z= Maximun value Foc (10)

Single X,Y,Z, shall be selected in a range between 0 to 10 10

FLUID TYPE FACTOR (Fh)

*Fluid type : condensate hydrocarbon ( Ffh = 3.0) (table appendix 2 consequence analysis)

*Fluid pressure : 15 bar (Fph = 2.5)(table appendix 2 consequence analysis)

*Fluid temperature : 50 C (Fth = 1.1) (table appendix 2 consequence analysis)

*Fluid volume : 50 m3 day (Ffrh=3.0) (table appendix 2 consequence analysis)

*Close proximity location ( manned plant area): (Flh=2.5) (table appendix 2 consequence analysis)

NFh = (3.0)*(3.0)*(1.5)*(3.0)*3.0)/4 (maximum X value)= 30.375

Fh = 61.875/ Nfh (30.375)

OPERATIONAL FACTOR (Fo)

Production loss factor (Fplo=4.0)

Redundancy (Fro=0.5)

Shut-down time factor (Fsto =3)

NFo= (4.0)*(1.0) (4.5)/3 (maximum Y value)= 6

Fo= (4*0.5*3.0)/6 = 1

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTOR

*Close proximity (Fle= 4.0)

*Fluid type (Ffe = 3.0)

*Volume available for escape = 2.5*1=2.5

*Expected time to control release fluid release : 1.0

NFe = max (Fle)* max*(Ffe)*(Fae)/Z

NFe= (5*3*2.5)/3= 12.5

Fe= (4*3*2.5)/12.5=2.4

Foc= 5.43

Action required according to the risk - inspection planning every 2 years.
