statutory status through the Act of Parliament called the NIFT Act 2006 for the
promotion and development of education and research in fashion technology
and for matters connected their with.

Since its inception in 1986, the institute has played a pioneering role in
envisioning and evolving Fashion business education in the country. With
growing demand for skilled manpower from the Fashion business industry
across the country, the Institute expanded its operations in 1995-96 by

WHAT IS FASHION?

Fashion implies creativity and time- an everchanging phenomenon ........ Hence

fashion design and display is essentially a theatrical setting with dramatic
effects. in architectural terms- a spatial modulation of continuous movement in
time and space. Much like the ambience of an indian bazaar where the drama of
day to day life unfolds. The fashion design has stood ahead of several other
design disciplines such as product design, etc. With respect to innovations and
inventions using flexible and economic means. It demands creativity and flair
of art together with the technical knowlwdge base vital to the masses.
The fashion industry consists of four levels:
the production of raw materials, principally fibres and textiles but
also leather and fur;
* the production of fashion goods by designers, manufacturers, contractors,
and others;
* retail sales;
* and various forms of advertising and promotion.
These levels consist of many separate but interdependent sectors, all of which
are devoted to the goal of satisfying consumer demand for apparel under
conditions that enable participants in the industry to operate at a profit.

SCOPE OF WORK-

Study and creation of spaces in an institution such that they

derive maximum benefit from the natural settings of the site,
hence the climate as well .
The challenge would be to create a space and buildings that
would keep the glamorous image of fashion world but at no
cost would ignore the functional aspect of it.
The building has to be symbolic of the professional stream
they are catering to which is very modern and forever
beaming with new ideas

PROJECT BRIEF-

Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions said Coco Chanel, and rightly so. The
Government of Madhya Pradesh has allotted 29 acres plot at Bhouri, on the outskirts of the Bhopal city.
It is close to IISER and SPA Bhopal campus (proposed site), etc. institutional campuses..

The institute is to be designed aesthetically and programmatically to mould students along the highest
prevailing guidelines to become successful in their respective fields. The main motive behind the idea of
this institute at bhopal is to fulfil the long-felt needs of the export-oriented garment industry and to train
man power in fashion design, garment manufacturing technology and apparel marketing and
merchandising.

The government of Madhya Pradesh has approved an additional budget of Rs. 1, 54, 50,000 for the
establishment of a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in BHOURI village in Bhopal .

NIFT Bhopal has committed itself in catalyzing the creation of a pool of professionals for the Fashion
industry. It also looks forward to contribute towards the upliftment of art and craft through various
courses and workshops. Being a national level institute, the mix of students from various parts of the
country, the mix of cultures, ideas and belief systems, breed understanding and tolerance would be taken
care of while pragmatic designing and planning. It is essential that the architecture of such an institution
affects its values. While the institutes faculty and the top line equipments and facilities, National
exposure, will play key role in inspiring students.

The ambience of the built form and the outer spaces, binding and enhancing these forms, together with
the inspiration nurtured by the institute to create an atmosphere of world class excellence.

northwest and south east side of the campus. The site is
surrounded by spastic soceity building by romi khosla,
classical dance institute and hauz khas housing society.
The building practically covers the whole site is irregular
shape

TOPOGRAPHY-
Topography has been modified to accommodate parking
requirements as well as the kund and amphitheater so
what is perceived as a ground floor , actually has a floor
below it.

CONCEPT-
The concept used by B.V Doshi for this building is to
represent it as a traditional town square through various
elements like, inward looking facades, interactive corridors,
bridges, terraces and communicative facades. He tried to
symbolize the evolution of building with time and it evolves
vivid memory of rich cultural heritage of the passing era.
interlinked facades resulting in the open space with a definite
space feeling. However open spaces such as courtyards in
traditional context are closed and fininte in nature. The basic
functional zoning is based upon the nature of requirement

CASE STUDY -01 NIFT , NEW DELHI 29

Critical analysis -
The blocks have no relation to the courts.
Every space have different orientation in the building. The main court orient itself in the
direction of diagonal axis secondary orients toward the stage, and different building blocks have
different orientation
Symbolically formless and fragmented, building image portrays the confused scene of fashion
in India, which is struggling to find its own identity among the growing western influence and
people finding it hard to find a way through, opting for the amorphous mix of the two. This
above said fact can be explained as the building has acquired too many elements which fails to
coalesce visually as well as functionally.
The glazed bridge, which do not go with the over-all image of the institute. the elements
depicting the ethnic image- the baoli, the terraces, the jharokhas, bazaar like atmosphere, the
court.
Stepped baoli is out of scale. Thus it is the symbolic portrayal of the past . It does not
intermingle with the present times.
The studio spaces are too small and does not provide with the functional freedom.
Cat-walk space is just enough for holding in-house fashion parades or rehearsal but insufficient
for larger gatherings.
Library - less reading space in library, excessive heat gain during summers due to curtain wall
glazing.

User review -
lack of proper playing space/ recreation space
hostel facility on the campus premises is also lacking
lack of proper exhibit / display space
lack of auditorium and gymnasium
Few departments have insufficient labs and few
departments share labs.
locker facility for the students is absent
landscape area is also lacking from the overall
layout.

CONTEXT. 52

It is very necessary to know the context of bhopal city regarding built forms
before starting the design of proposd nift campus at Bhouri village in bhopal.

MANIT BHOPAL -
MANIT BHOPAL is a premire Institute of Engineering and Architecture departments.
Simple courtyard planning is done and movement is along the perimeter of courtyards.
Singly and doubly loaded corridors are used.

CONTEXT. 54

BHARAT BHAVAN BHOPAL -

Planning Approach

Courtyard planning: for the consideration of the climate A series of terrace gardens are
weave which could be seen cascading down to the lake
The visitor enters at the highest level and walk down a pedestrian spine flanked by a
pattern of courtyards, to reach various parts of the complex.
Each space defines itself
Each of the parts of the building is distinct, yet allows easily into one another, linked by
meandering paths. The total effect is one of surprise and pleasure.
In order to avoid the 'museum shock1 in this project the courtyards and the terraced
gardens have been interspersed with the viewing galleries.

CONTEXT. 55

Nature of spaces

The plan generates two different kind of spaces: open - to - sky and enclosed.
Spaces are calm in nature.
The movement leads to the lake through activities where space penetrates into each other
and has a visual transparency from within & outside.
The plaza created by the different terraces is very public in nature.
The functions spatially linked to the courtyards, inner volume changes according to the site
conditions and requirements of the functions.

DESIGN APPROACH. 56

DESIGN APPROACH
COURTYARDS -
While much of their value can be attributed to
cultural factors climate has been the key factor
,and the formation of activity zones Even today, it
is normal to extend some day-to-day functions
,into open areas Be it the breeze in summers and
winters, drawn into the open areas for comfort As
a matter of fact there is much in architectural
expression that addresses the interior and the
exterior in several distinctive ways. This generated
very specific and very functional spaces like
pavilions, thresholds, courtyards and terraces.

A courtyard articulates floors. Courtyard is the

heart of the area H supports. Particularly it is the
layer of spaces it holds that gradually built up the
sequence of activities.

Internal open spaces, in the form of courtyards,

became another thematic element in all scales of
domestic architecture. From small urban houses to
large mansions and palaces, courtyards became the
key organizational elements responding to climatic
conditions as well as the cultural needs of
communities
This private internal open space also acquired
special significance while serving various levels of
privacy A wide range of household activities could
extend into courtyards These spaces became the
living areas of all domestic architecture. Courtyard
spaces, drawing people out into the open, were
further supported by terraces serving similar
functional and climatic needs in the warmer and
more and /ones, one can see the extra effort made
to build terraces, as if one was building a
courtyard at a higher level. It would not only be
articulated m its construction system, but also get
connected to the spaces at that level

CONCEPT. 57

CONCEPT -

LEARNING WAS NOT HAPPENING STRICTLY IN CLASSROOMS,

BUT IN THE CORRIDORS AND THE SPACES IN BETWEEN AS WELL.

Education is basically the INTERACTION among its all components like between teacher
and students, between faculty, between students and also between built and open spaces and
between all these and nature . Natural enviornment is quite important as nature refresh us
always while artificial is momentry.
Main key factor are USERS. Design approach should be user friendly which should provide
a proper shape to their over all development .
