Section Four: Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction

Curriculum and professional standards are important components in education and have

been for some time. Section four of the portfolio focuses on the link between my selected

artifacts and curriculum standards from New York State Learning Standards, Common Core and

the Ontario Ministry of Education Expectations. This section will also present an overview on

the link between the artifacts and professional standards such as InTASC Standards, New York

State Code of Ethics for Educators and the Ontario Ethical Teacher Standards. I have also linked

artifacts with the International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students.

Lastly, the section will consist of the Alignment to the Curriculum and Professional Standards

Chart.

I believe that professional standards for educators help to maintain a certain level of

professionalism. It is critical for educators to remain professional at all times. I firmly believe

that once we choose to become teachers, we make the lifelong commitment to be a model,

upstanding citizen in society. We must represent ourselves with the highest code of conduct and

adhere to professional ethical standards.

The curriculum standards are used to make sure that students are exposed to certain

curriculum topics and develop specific skills while attending school. This is important because

students should have the same opportunity, regardless of where they live and what school they

attend. If a family moves from one school to another or once state to another, the transition for

the student should be as seamless as possible. Curriculum standards help maintain consistency

and provide peace of mind for the parents and students by making this as easy as possible. The

family should also have confidence that the educators are following their professional standards
and this will again maintain a certain level of competency for everyone involved in the education

system.

Curriculum for teachers and students also provide guidelines with respect to content,

planning, instructional practice. It is the responsibility of all teachers to promote a positive, safe

learning environment, because without this learning will not be maximized. Teachers must

engage and seek out professional development that expands their relevant educational knowledge

and keeps them current in learning practices.

Standards Chart

The Standards chart provides a brief overview of the content found in Section 3. It

outlines the standards that connect with each artifact and provides the reader with a quick

reference guide and overview.

Conclusion

This section provided an overview for the reader. It is a clear and concise overview of curriculum and professional standards

that are linked to my section three artifacts. The chart provides evidence that the teacher must adhere to many governing bodies when

they create work for students. The teacher must uphold their character by making sure they meet various codes of conduct. The

educator must be detailed when identifying what curriculum standards their lessons are linked to. Finally, this section keeps a record

of the profession development and curriculum products I am proud of and proficient with.

The following section, section five, will provide the reader with my reflection of this portfolio project and detail my thoughts

about what I will take with me moving forward once graduated.
