PEMDAS PROJECT WRITE UP EXAMPLE

The example I used for my PEMDAS Poster was two cubed minus eight divided by four

times two plus parenthesis seven minus two. Following the rules of the order of operations I

completed the subtractions within the parenthesis first. I subtracted two from seven and got five.

My expression is now two cubed minus eight divided by four times two plus five. I then

addressed the exponent of two cubed that equals two times two times two which is eight. My

expression is now eight minus eight divided by four times two plus five. The next step would be

to look for any multiplication or division operations and complete them as they appear from left

to right. Division shows up first from left to right, therefore I must divide eight by four first.

This would make my expression eight minus two times two plus five. There is also a

multiplication operation of two times two, which equals four. The expression is now eight minus

four plus five. The last step of the order of operations is addition and subtraction as they appear

from left to right. The subtraction of four from eight appears first so it must be done first. Eight

minus four equals four so my expression is now four plus five which will give me my answer of

nine.

In reflection, I really enjoyed making my mnemonic device Please Educate My

Dreadfully Awesome Students. The write up was difficult in the sense that I needed to write

out each operation and number. However, I feel that it gave me a better understanding of how

operations are completed. It definitely made me think about how to word the operations in each

step so that anyone who reads it could understand what was going on as I solved my expression.
It also gave me an opportunity to use my vocabulary appropriately and effectively. All in all, I

really enjoyed this project and write up. I really feel that I have a deeper understanding of the

rules of the order of operations.
