Chapter 1

Introduction:

A diesel generator is the combination of a diesel engine with an electric generator (often an
alternator) to generate electrical energy. This is a specific case of engine-generator. . A generator on a
ship is known as the heart of the ship. It is that life-line which supports each and every
function of the ship. Generator of the ship requires special care, attention, and
maintenance for its effective and economic running.

The generator onboard, being the powerhouse of the ship, requires regular
maintenance and overhauling to ensure efficient and safe operations. A responsible marine
engineer will never wait to carry out maintenance procedures until its machinery is on the
edge of breakdown. Instead he will take all necessary precautions to prevent his ship from
any impending troubles, which can take place because of engine room machinery failure or
breakdown.

This thesis is concerned with the knowledge and practices of preventive

maintenance among selected marine engineers at Batangas Port , Batangasa City.

The focused of this study is to determine the importance of maintenance of generator

engine on board.
State of the Problem

This study will determine the knowledge and practices on preventive maintenance of

generator engine among marine engineers at Batangas port , Batangas City. Specifically, this will

seek answer to the following sub-problems:

1.What is the profile of the Marine Engineers in terms of

1.1 Rank

1.2 Years of experience onboard

2.What is the level of knowledge of Marine Engineers on preventive maintenance of

generator engine?

3.What are the practices of Marine Engineers on preventive maintenance of generator

engine?

4.Is there significant difference in the level of knowledge of Marine Engineers on preventive

maintenance of generator engine when grouped according to profile variables?

5.Is there significant difference in the practices of Marine Engineers on preventive

maintenance of generator engine when grouped according to profile variables?

6.Is there significant relation between level of knowledge and practices of preventive

maintenance of generator engine among Marine Engineers?

Statement of Hypothesis

The following hypothesis are the tentative answers to the research problems. The null forms

will be subjected to statistical testing at .05 level of significance through the corresponding

appropriate statistical test:

1.There is no significant difference in the level of knowledge of Marine Engineers on

preventive maintenance of generator engine when grouped according to profile variables.

2.There is no significant difference in the practices of Marine Engineers on preventive

maintenance of generator engine when grouped according to profile variables.

3.There is no significant relation between level of knowledge and practices on preventive

maintenance of generator engine among Marine Engineers.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

This study

Operational Framework

The
Assumption of the Study

The study will revolve around the following assumptions which are givins of the
problems:

1.That level of knowledge of preventive maintenance of generator engine among marine

engineers at Batangas Port Batangas City

2.Practices of preventive maintenance of generator engine among marine engineers at

Batangas Port Batangas City

3.

Scope and Delimitation

The study focusedon level of knowledge and practices on preventive maintenance of

generator engine among marine engineers at Batangas port , Batangas City. The study was

conducted during Academic Year 2017-2018 . The respondents of the study are the selected marine

engineers at Batangas Port Batangas City.

Significance of the study

This study is envisioned to make midshipmen, the College of Maritme Education , the marine

engineer officers, maritime officers, maritime instructors, and researchers realize the importance of

being knowledgeable about preventive maintenace of generatoe engine.

Specifically, results of this study will benefit the following:

College of Maritime Education. This would serve as an additional reference or studies on the

existing curriculum which in turn will benefit the students.

Shipping Agencies. This would benefit the industries' progress in terms of hiring competitive and

world-class mariners.

Students Researchers. This study would serve as a ready reference in the future.

Future Researchers. This study would serve as their guide or reference and would help them to

gather information about preventive maintenance of generator engine.

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of the discussions of this paper, the following terms are defined both

conceptually and operationally.

Level means degree of attainment; and knowledge refers to the amount of facts or information about

an idea, object, or person which a person knows or possesses. (Webster Dictionary, 2004)Hence,

level of knowledge refers to the degree of attainment of know how in a particular field. In this study,

level of knowledge will be measured in terms of a 4-point scale.

Practices refers to the actual application or use of an idea, belief, or method as opposed to theories

about such application or use.(www.merriam-webster.com)

Preventative maintenance(or preventive maintenance) is maintenance that is regularly

performed on a piece of equipment to lessen the likelihood of it failing.Preventative maintenance

is performed while the equipment is still working, so that it does not break down

unexpectedly.(www.fiixsoftware.com)

Ship Generator consisting of prime mover and alternator. Main switch board which is a metal

enclosure taking power from the diesel generator and supplying it to different

machinery.(www.marineinsight.com)

marine engineer is someone who designs, builds, tests and repairs ships, boats, underwater craft,

offshore platforms, and drilling equipment. They often work closely with naval architects to design

everything from small yachts and fishing boats to submarines and aircraft

carriers.(www.sokanu.com)
