In this enjoyable pairwork activity, students work together to put a shopping conversation in
order. The conversation is about buying an item of clothing from a shop. In the conversation,
students learn how to state sizes and ask about colour and cost.

Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each pair of students and cut as indicated.

Procedure

Begin the activity by eliciting questions that a customer buying a T-shirt would ask a shop
assistant and vice-a-versa. Write the students ideas on the board.

Next, divide the class into pairs and distribute the worksheets.

Tell the students that they have a shopping conversation but that it is not in the correct order.

Explain that the students must work together to put the conversation in order by numbering
the sentences 1 to 19.

Emphasize that they are not allowed to show each other their worksheet. If possible, sit the
students back to back.

Then, have the students put the conversation in order.

When the pairs have finished, check the answers as a class.

Then, tell the pairs to make a short continuation of the conversation. This could be about
how and where to pay, for example.

Ask some pairs to read their complete conversation to the class.

Finally, ask the students to memorize the conversation. First the shop assistant reads and
the customer tries to remember what to say and then vice versa.
