VOCABULARY

1. Matter
2. Mass
3. Volume
4. Density
All objects in our universe are made up of
MATTER (atoms)!
Sometimes these atoms float around by
themselves.
Sometimes these atoms bond (connect
to other atoms).
How much Matter an object is
made up of is known as an
objects MASS.
Measured in grams (g).
How much space an object takes up is known
as VOLUME.

Measured in Liters (L)

(usually for liquids)
Or Centimeters cubed (cm3)
(usually for solids)
(Length x width x height)
WHAT IS DENSITY?

Density is how much MASS (matter) is in any

given VOLUME (space).

(Most Dense) (Least Dense)

Signs that an object has greater density
Heavier than other objects
More likely to sink in water or other liquids

(Example: Metals tend to have a high density, and

therefore be pretty heavy compared to other
objects.)
We need BOTH mass and volume to find
an objects density.

Density = Mass divided by Volume!

TRANSLATION : Density is a measure of
how much matter is squished into a given
space.
THE MAGIC TRIANGLE GIVES US THE FORMULA TO FIND
3 DIFFERENT THINGS
Mass
Volume
or
Density
MAGIC TRIANGLE:

If the letters are beside each other, you multiply.

example: D (density) x V (volume) = M (mass)

MAGIC TRIANGLE:

If the letter is on top of another letter, you divide.

example:
M (mass) / V (volume) = D (density)
or
M (mass) /D (density) = V (volume)
EXAMPLE:

What is the density of an object that

has
Mass is: 100g
Volume is: 5mL

Density = (M/V)
20g/mL!

COMPARING DENSITIES

Every substance, whether solid, liquid, or gas,

Has its own density. The higher the density, the
More likely that substance will sink below others.
In the image to the right the clear liquid (below
the yellow) has the greatest density. The blue
Liquid at the top has the least (lowest) density
