Legion

Proposal for old Safeway site includes
new legion hall plus cash flow options
By Lorene Keitch
Members of Clovedale’s Royal Canadian Legion had a
meeting recently to hear more about a proposed redevelop-
ment of the Cloverdale Mall site.
The proposal hinges on the legion’s co-operation, which
will have to move from its current location to a new building
within the project site. The eight-acre parcel of land is better

“We feel the legion is better located on the other corner,
and is better located for the project overall,” explains Craig
Locchead, vice president of TL Housing Solutions. “This is
definitely the preferred method.”

This year’s Rock the River tour includes stops in
Cloverdale, Calgary and Edmonton. The tour dates
follow a first-year success last summer in venues

area pastors, Buhler explains.
Looking further afield at outdoor venues, they
came across Cloverdale’s Millenium Amphithe-

Seven sacred teachings at Clayton Heights

By Sheila Reynolds
There are seven creatures – a bear, eagle, buffalo, human,
turtle, wolf and beaver – and printed near them, are the
principles they embody.
The soaring bald-headed eagle, for example, represents
love, while the howling white wolf signifies humility. The
other animals embody everything from respect and cour-
age to wisdom, honesty and truth. They are the Seven Sa-
cred Teachings in First Nations culture, meant to demon-
strate, through the animal world, man’s connection to life.
The images and words are all part of a detailed mural at
Clayton Heights Secondary.
Fine arts department head Mary-Lou Williams came up
with the concept and design for the five-foot by eight-foot
canvas, in which the animals images are also paired with a
First Nations crest of the creatures in either Coast Salish,
Haida, Kwakiutl, Ojibway or Cree designs.
“I came across the Seven Sacred Teachings and how they
were embodied in these different animals that are indig-
enous to Canada,” Williams said. “I thought ‘wouldn’t it be
interesting – because kids are always interested in drawing
wildlife – to incorporate that with an appreciation of First
Nations art form and line?’”
Integrating text into the artwork, including a hand-
written legend, added a literacy component to the school
project.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
• July 31st, 2:30-4:30 Mad Tradition - Roxanna Sabir & Craig McGregor
Mad Tradition will take you on a journey that navigates through the traditional
and contemporary musical frontiers. For this project, the inspired duo combine
their respective musical influences and love of fiddle music to create original
arrangements that celebrate traditional fiddle music, with influences from the Celtic,
Old Time and Canadian Folk repertoires, combining medleys of tunes over
four-hundred years old, with contemporary melodies.
