OptiX RTN 980L Long Haul Radio Transmission System V100R007 IDU
Quick Installation Guide (Indoor)
The OptiX RTN 980L long haul system is composed of a powerful TDM/Hybrid/Packet
integrated IDU 980L, a high-performance high-power radio frequency unit (RFU), and
a scalable branching unit (BU).
The IDU 980L is the indoor unit of the Agile IP LH-Split. It receives and multiplexes
services, performs service processing, IF processing, and protection processing, and
provides the system control and communications function.
The dimensions (H x W x D) of the IDU 980L chassis are 225 mm x 442 mm x 220 mm.
RFU port: A branching unit provides four RFU ports so that RFUs can mount to it.
Main antenna port: The main antenna port is connected to the main antenna.
Main cascade port: The main cascade port is connected to the main antenna
port on the secondary branching unit
Lifting eye: The lifting eye is used to tie with the lifting sling.
Bracket and hold hoop: The bracket and hold hoop fix a branching unit onto a pole.
When two branching units are cascaded, the branching unit that is directly connected
to an antenna is called the main branching unit and the other one that is not directly
connected to an antenna is called the secondary branching unit.
Antennas are classified into two types, namely, the single-polarized antenna and dual-
polarized antenna.
By installation mode between the antenna and the transceiver, antennas are classified
to direct-mount antennas and separate-mount antennas.
The IF cable provides -48V power for RFU and transmits the IF signal and RFU
management signal between IDU and RFU.
Note: Ground cables must be installed for all branching units and RFUs.

The equipment can be installed in an ETSI cabinet, a 21-inch open rack, or a 19-inch
standard cabinet.
Before installing the equipment, ensure that the cabinet has already been installed. The
cabinet can be installed on the ESD floor or concrete floor.
The default mounting ears are applicable to the situation where the equipment is
installed in a 19-inch standard cabinet. When installing the equipment in another type
of cabinet, use other mounting ears as required. When installing the equipment in a
21-inch cabinet, install two sets of mounting ears. That is, retain the default mounting
ears, and install another set of mounting ears for the equipment installed in the 21-
inch cabinet.
When tightening floating nuts, ensure a minimum of 25 mm space on the left and
right sides of the RTN 980 for ventilation.
When tightening floating nuts, ensure a minimum of 25mm space on the left and right
sides of the RTN 980 for ventilation.
Before installing the chassis in an ETSI cabinet, replace mounting ears based on the
type of the cabinet.
Note: Before installing and removing/inserting a board, wear an ESD wrist strap or
ESD gloves. Before you insert a board, ensure that the slot is correct. If it is difficult to
insert the board, stop the operation.
E1 panel functions as a DDF for the IDU. The port impedance of each E1 port on an E1
panel is 75 ohms.
When installing a PGND cable in the ETSI cabinet, connect the PGND cable to the
ground point on the left side of the chassis.
When installing a PGND cable in the 19-inch cabinet, connect the PGND cable to the
ground point of the left mounting ear of the chassis.
Step6:Ensure that the circuit breaker of the PDU is set to the OFF state. Insert the DC
connector into the power port of the PDU. Ensure that the two groups of power
cables are connected to different wiring terminals,
Note: For a 1.6 mm diameter E1 cable, use a type 75-1-1 connector and a 2.5 mm or
1.7 mm COAX crimping tool when assembling the DDF-side connector of the E1 cable.
The Ethernet service port supports the MDI/MDI-X adaptive function. Therefore, you
can assemble either a crossover cable or a straight-through cable. It is recommended
that you assemble a straight-through cable.
If the XPIC function is disabled on an ISX2 or IFX2 board, use a short XPIC cable to
connect the IN and OUT ports on the board. Otherwise, board performance will be
affected.
If the XPIC function is disabled on an ISV3 board, do not use a short XPIC cable to
connect the IN and OUT ports on the board. Otherwise, the board performance will be
affected.
The Ethernet service port supports the MDI/MDI-X adaptive function. Therefore, you
can assemble either a crossover cable or a straight-through cable. It is recommended
that you assemble a straight-through cable.
CAUTION :When installing or maintaining fibers, do not look into the optical port
without eye protection. Coil up the inter-office fibers on the ODF and then route them
into the cabinet. Do not coil up external fibers in the cabinet.
Ensure that the interconnected network cables do not form a loop and the standby
CSH/CSTA board is not connected to another network cable.
Before installing an IF jumper, turn off the ODU switch on the IF board. If an RG-8U IF
cable or a 1/2-inch IF cable is used, an IF jumper is required to connect the IF cable
and IDU; if a 5D IF cable is used, the 5D IF cable is directly connected to the IDU.
When connecting an IF jumper to an IF cable, you must test the connectivity of the IF
cable. On the equipment configured with IF 1+1 protection, the IF cable of the active
ODU must be connected to the IF jumper of the active IF board, and the IF cable of the
standby ODU must be connected to the IF jumper of the standby IF board.
If the XPIC IF board is used, the IF cable connected to the vertically polarized ODU
must be connected to the IF jumper on the IF board that processes vertically polarized
waves, and the IF cable connected to the horizontally polarized ODU must be
connected to the IF jumper of the IF board that processes horizontally polarized waves.
For the large diameter antenna, such as 1.2 meter and above, it was disassembled and
delivered to the site. Installation engineers should assemble it on site by the antenna
installation guide which in the antenna package. It is unnecessary to assemble the
small diameter antennas on site.
By default, the antenna polarization is set as vertical, and its polarization identification
mark (a red point near to the feeder) is aligned to the mark V. To change the
antenna polarization, loosen the screws of the feeder and rotate the feeder for 90
degrees, ensure the polarization identification mark is aligned to the mark H. And
fasten the screws.
To ensure the safety during the processes of antenna installation and adjustment, it
should install the anti-fall bracket before the antenna installation.
Anti-fall bracket is used to prevent antenna from falling while installing or
commissioning.
Bind one end of the hoisting rope on one of the hoisting ring. The other end is on the
pulley. For the small size antenna, persons can also pull the rope on tower without
pulley.
Use one or two stretching ropes, bind then on the antenna. Each rope hold by persons
to prevent antenna from rotating while antenna be hoisted.
Before the antenna is installed completely, do not remove the hoisting ropes and bind
the rope on the tower to prevent antenna from falling.
Adjust the antenna azimuth as designed then fasten the four bolts.
The two hoist rings are only used for antenna hoisting, and should be removed after
hoisting finished.
Take out the rubber plugs of leakage holes at the bottom of antenna shield.
For the antennas which diameter are 1.2 meters or above, it needs to install the side
strut which can fix the antenna well.
Mark the antenna identifier to indicate its opposite site.
The matter that is paint break off and distorted can not appear on antenna.
The antenna must be installed in the right height and position and polarization
according to the design document or customer's instruction.
The fixation of antenna and pole are reliable. For the more than 1.2m antenna, the
side strut must be installed and fixed position is correct.
The antenna identifier of each antenna should be labeled with opposite site name or
ID.
Be careful not to damage the gas-proof film over the waveguide port of a branching
unit.
After the RFU is unpacked, it must be powered on within 24 hours to avoid moisture
accumulation in it.
When hoisting a branching unit, tie the branching unit to the lifting sling using a pulley
or hoisting ring, with the goal of easily hoisting the branching unit and reducing
friction damage to the lifting sling.
The elevation angle between two branching units must be between 135 degrees to
180 degrees.
Fit U-shaped clamps into the installation holes on the branching unit.
Tighten the screws on the U-shaped clamps using an adjustable wrench.Untie the
lifting slings.
Ground cables must be installed for all branching units and RFUs.
Apply anti-rusting grease to the ground bar or ground point after installing the ground
cable.
The flexible waveguide can be bent only within its maximum twist angle and at the
side with a larger area. The E-bend radius and H-bend radius cannot be smaller than
the minimum bending radius.
To fix a flexible waveguide, it is recommended that you install three sets of fixtures;
one near either end and one in the middle of the waveguide. For details about the
installation position and method, see the usage instructions.
Tips:
Flange spacers are used for optimal water-proof performance when PDR flange interfaces
are interconnected.
Flange spacers are also used when flexible waveguides, 6GHz antennas (PDR flange
interface), and elliptical waveguides are connected.
When installing a 0.9 m long flexible waveguide, you need to use a flexible waveguide
clip, evenly divide the flexible waveguide into two sections, and then install the two
sections in the correct positions.
When installing a 1.2 m long flexible waveguide or 1.8 m long flexible waveguide, you
need to use two flexible waveguide clips, evenly divide the flexible waveguide into
three sections, and then install the three sections in the correct positions.
Fix a flexible waveguide fixture on a pole using a hose clamp, and then adjust
the length of the bolt according to the position of the flexible waveguide.
When fixing a 7G&8G flexible waveguide, use the 7G&8G flexible waveguide
sheath.
When fixing an 11G flexible waveguide, use both the 7G&8G flexible
waveguide sheath and 11G flexible waveguide sheath. Place the flexible
waveguide in the 11G flexible waveguide sheath, and then place the 7G&8G
flexible waveguide sheath in the 11G flexible waveguide sheath.
Step4:Fastening screws
Keep the cutting area down, in order to avoid dirt or copper shavings falling into the
waveguide.
When cutting an elliptical waveguide and assembling connectors, clear residues in the
elliptical waveguide.
Before hoisting an elliptical waveguide, use clean cloth or paper to wrap elliptical
waveguide connectors for protection.
When using the hoisting grip, firmly secure the two ends of the hoisting grip. After
hoisting an elliptical waveguide, remove the hoisting grip
The part behind an elliptic waveguide connector must be kept straight for a certain
length before being bent.
Ensure that the bending radius of an elliptical waveguide is larger than the minimum
value of each plane.
Do not twist an elliptical waveguide. To change the direction of a plane, bend it twice.
When elliptical waveguides, flexible waveguides, antennas, and branching units are
connected, fix long screws into through-holes and short screws into blind vias.
Fasten all screws for connecting elliptical waveguides, flexible waveguides, antennas,
and branching units.
Waterproof the connectors between the elliptical waveguide and flexible waveguide
and between the elliptical waveguide and branching unit.
Step1:Use a knife to cut the rubber jacket of the elliptic waveguide, and use needle-
nose pliers to remove the rubber jacket.
Choosing the IF cables according to the distance between IDU and RFU.
5D cable applicable distance< 120 m;RG-8U cable applicable distance from 120 m to
180 m;1/2-inch cable applicable distance from 180 m to 300 m.
Note:
A. The IF cable should be routed from the top downwards and should be bound at the
time of routing.
B. Make drip loops for IF cables below the RFU and near a room entry.
C. The bending radius of the IF cable should be larger than 40 cm (15.7 inches).
D. The IF cable should be bound using outdoor cable ties or feeder clamps every
meter(3.28 ft).
TIP:
After making a drip loop for an IF cable below the RFU, coil the IF cable around the pole
to form a loop with a diameter of 0.6 m for future antenna position adjustment.
It is recommended that you bind IF cable labels to two ends of an IF cable and the exit
from the tower. It is recommended that you use the silkscreen of an RFU port on the
branching unit as the label identification, for example, To RFU Port 1.
If the equipment is configured with N+1 protection, the IF cable connecting to the RFU
that provides the active channel is connected to the IF jumper from the main IF board.
The IF cable connecting to the RFU that provides the standby channel is connected to
the IF jumper from the standby IF board.
If the XPIC function is enabled on the IF boards, the IF cable connecting to the
vertically polarized RFU is connected to the IF jumper from the IF board that processes
vertically polarized waves, and the IF cable connecting to the horizontally polarized
RFU is connected to the IF jumper from the IF board that processes horizontally
polarized waves.
The ground point depends on the installation mode and the length of the IF cable.
Generally, the IF cable should be grounded to a minimum of two points. When the IF
cable is longer than 60 meters, add a grounding point for every extra 30 meters.
As recommended in ITU K.56, the IF cable does not need to be separately grounded
under the RFU if the RFU is properly grounded.
The angle of the ground cable of the clip and the IF cable should not be larger than 15
degrees. When the IF cable is vertically routed, the ground cable of the clip should be
led downwards.
Step3:Wrap three layers of PVC tape over the waterproof insulation tape.
Step4:Use the outdoor bundling strap to bind the PVC tape tight at both ends. Cut off
the extra cable strap after the PVC tape is Tightened.
The Above part describes how to waterproof the connectors between the elliptical
waveguide and flexible waveguide and connectors between the IF cable and RFU as an
example. The method for waterproofing other outdoor connectors or components is
the same.
Step1: Determine the azimuth of the antenna according to the installation position and height of the
antenna. Adjust the elevation of the antenna to the horizontal position.
Step2: Connect a multimeter to the RSSI port on the ODU at the local end and measure the voltage value
VBNC.
Step3:Retain the remote antenna secure. Adjust the level adjustment screw. At the local end, rotate the
antenna widely in the horizontal direction.
If three signal peaks are tracked, adjust the azimuth of the antenna so that the received signal
level (RSL) reaches the peak value at position 2.
If two signal peaks are tracked, adjust the azimuth of the antenna to the middle of positions 4
and 5. Then, adjust the elevation of the antenna so that the three signal peaks such as the
signals on the line AA' can appear. Adjust the antenna so that the RSL reaches the peak value at
position 2.
If one signal peak is tracked, adjust the azimuth of the antenna to the middle of positions 6 and
7. Then, adjust the elevation of the antenna so that the three signal peaks such as the signals on
the line AA' can appear. Adjust the antenna so that the RSL reaches the peak value at position 2.
Step4: Adjust the elevation adjustment screw. At the local end, gently adjust the elevation and azimuth
until the RSL reaches the peak within the tracked range.
Step5: Repeat Steps 3 to 4 to ensure that three signal peaks are tracked in both horizontal and vertical
directions. When the local RSL reaches the maximum peak value, tighten the local antenna.
Step6: Adjust the remote antenna to ensure that the RSL at the local end and the RSL at the remote end
reach the peak value. Check the status of the ODU indicator on the IF board. The ODU indicator on the IF
board is off. If the ODU indicator on the IF board is yellow and blinks every 300 ms, continue aligning the
antenna.
Step7: Tighten all the screws of the antennas after the alignment is completed.
Step1: Power off the vertically polarized ODUs at both ends of a radio link, power on the horizontally
polarized ODUs at both ends of the radio link. This ensures that the antennas at both ends transmit
horizontally polarized signals.
Step2: Adjust the azimuth and elevation of the antennas at both ends by referring to the description
inAligning Single-Polarized Antennas, and ensure that the main lobes of the horizontally polarized
signals are aligned with the antennas.
Step3: Use a multimeter to measure the RSL (P1) on the RSSI port of the horizontally polarized ODU at
the local end.
Step4: Power on the vertically polarized ODU at the local end. Use a multimeter to measure the RSL on
the RSSI port of the vertically polarized ODU. Release the holder of the feed boom gently, and turn the
feed boom gently until the RSL reaches the minimum value (P2). The calculated XPD1 (XPD1 = P1 - P2)
cannot be less than 30 dB. Record the current angle (D1) of the feed boom.
Step5: Power off the horizontally polarized ODUs at both ends of the radio link, and power on the
vertically polarized ODUs at both ends of the radio link. Adjust the azimuth and elevation of the antennas
at both ends by referring to the description in Aligning Single-Polarized Antennas, and ensure that the
main lobes of the vertically polarized signals are aligned with the antennas.
Step6: Refer to Steps 3 and 4 to ensure that the calculated XPD2 (XPD2 = P3 - P4) is equal to or more
than 30dB. Record the current angle (D2) of the feed boom.
Step7: Repeat Steps 1 to 6 to adjust the feed boom gently (ranging from D1 to D2), and ensure that
XPD1 and XPD2 are equal to or more than 30 dB.
Step8: Tighten all the screws of the antennas after the alignment is completed.
