Sulzer RTA Local Control Station

This page describes the local control station on a Sulzer RTA96C 12 cylinder engine as fitted to the latest generation of
container ships.

The local control station is situated halfway along the

engine on the fuel pump level where the engine
governor and air start distributor are also situated.

Although the engine is normally operated from the

bridge, in an emergency the control can be simply
changed over to local control from the engine side.

As well as the local control levers shown above there is a

tacho, a telegraph, aux.blower start buttons and local speed
controls

A gauge panel gives an overview of important parameters.

The instructions at the local control panel are reproduced below. Local Control Panel. The Governor speed setting dial is the black
knob above the telegraph.

There are three levers on the local control station; A MANOEUVRING lever which is normally in the REMOTE
CONTROL position, a RUN-STOP lever which is normally in the RUN position and a FUEL CONTROL lever which is
normally in the REMOTE CONTROL position.

The MANOEUVRING lever and the RUN-STOP lever are connected by rods which control the starting pneumatic

control valves - see The Sulzer RTA Air Start System.

The local control can operate under two different conditions; with or without the governor. If the governor is operational
then all that needs to be done to change over whilst running is to match the speed setting control on the control panel with
the speed of the engine and then move the MANOEUVRING lever into the appropriate run position (ahead or astern).

If changing over to local control because the governor is faulty, then the FUEL CONTROL lever must be connected to the
fuel linkage.

This is achieved by moving the FUEL CONTROL lever out of its remote control position and locating the spring loaded
pin in the hole in the fuel control linkage shown on in the photo above. The fuel is controlled by winding the handwheel
on the FUEL CONTROL lever which moves the control rod to the fuel pump shaft
