peter -

what you have attached below looks like my emails to MM at about the time of our clandestine meeting in
prague when i was after his story and the recordings. the extent of my involvement in his asylum case
was that i thought it was appropriate to get him the phone number and name of a consular person who
was the right address for such inquiries. I was not interested in getting involved beyond sharing a number
from my rolodex. i asked the ambassador in kiev to look in his directory for prague and while i was
traveling somewhere in siberia, he passed on to one of my colleagues in moscow a name from the
consular section of the prague embassy and one of my staff sent it along to MM.

on the book, i told him from the beginning that the archive he said he had was an important historic
record. i think i told him that i was not in a position to write a book, but that if he was serious and got all
the tapes transcribed, (something he never quite got around to) i was sure there was a book in it. the
discussion never went any farther because from the outset almost, it was clear that he could not sit down
and complete the task of getting this record down on paper so that journalists and scholars could have
access to it and evaluate it.

hope that helps.

hi again. i've attached scanned version of 13 feb. email.the asylum angle in the case interests me, in
part, becuz i was involved in zenon poznyak's evac from rb in 1996 and was myself evaced (evicted) in
1997. kup of rferl and tom from ft have shared their recollections, as have others. sharon lafre says she
never wrote melnychenko but i'm too lazy to refresh her memory. sent her the ipi discs to moscow on
april 18 2001 on condition she make copy and pass on same to NYT bureau. asylum and bookdeal more
sidebars than information about recordings - which is intextricably linked to gongadze's fate and that of
political prisoners still languishing in jail here. more interested in what happened to unreleased recording.
also will prob involve laz trial in march and other iraq related matters (like ddcia visit to ukraine in 2000

because i don't plan on using them for quotes or refering to same in what i'm working on. does, at least,

Mr. Melnichenko said that his legal status in the country where he is hiding expired on Tuesday and that
he would like the United States or Britain to help protect his family while he completed his work.

Mr. Melnichenko expressed concern for the safety of his wife, Lilia, and their 4-year-old daughter, Lesya,
who are with him in hiding. He said he was reluctant to request political asylum in the West for fear of
being accused of being a Western agent.
