Read the following text and answer the questions about it.
A Strange Experience
Last month I was on holiday in Ireland with my mum and dad. One day, we were driving through a
small village. It was time for lunch, so we stopped at a restaurant.
It was a large, old building. We looked through the window. There were lots of people in the
restaurant. They were eating, drinking and chatting. A musician was playing the violin. But there was
something strange about the people. They weren't wearing normal, modern clothes. They were wearing
hats, jackets and dresses from another century. We couldn't understand it. But we were hungry, so we
opened the door.
When we went into the restaurant, everything was different. The people were wearing normal
clothes. The musician wasn't there - the music was on CD. It was a very strange experience!

o Lets read?
Read the following text and then answer the questions about it.
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), one of the outstanding figures of the Renaissance, was the worlds
greatest designer. He left over 7,000 pages of notes and drawings. You need a mirror to read many of
Leonardos notes, because he wrote them in reverse, starting at the right side of the page and moving to the
left.
One of Leonardos projects was to create a flying machine. His dream was to fly like a bird. He
observed the flight of birds, studying the anatomy of their wings and the function of their feathers. After
watching birds flight, Leonardo concluded that, in the absence of an engine not invented until centuries
later the best prospect for human flight was fixed-wing gliding. He then designed a machine similar to a
modern hang-glider. It had a wooden frame and two huge wings, similar to a bats wings, which were worked
by the pilots hands and feet. The pilot lay down in the frame of the machine and pumped pedals to move
its wings. Leonardo also anticipated the invention of the helicopter and the parachute, which shows the
great mans fascination with flight.
(Adapted from Leonardo da Vinci, Francesa Romei, Simon & Schuster, 1994)

make one example using the past simple or past progressive tense.
Read the following text and circle all the comparative, superlative, comparison
expressions, and all the past simple/past progressive tenses you find on the text. Each
student will read a sentence to the group.
A Great Day
Yesterday my brother and I went to see a football game. We watched our two favorite teams, the
Eagles and the Hawks. It was the second week of the season and the day was much colder than the week
before. We were excited because I love the Hawks and he loves the Eagles.
The seats were good, but I wanted something closer to the field. However, we sat and enjoyed the
game. Well, we enjoyed it until we started arguing. The problem with my brother and I is that we both think
our team is better than the other team. He always says to me that the Eagles are faster,
stronger, and smarter than the Hawks. I never agree. On this day, he was wrong. The Hawks played a lot
better than the Eagles. They looked stronger and tougher than the Eagles.
One thing I didnt like was that the food and drinks were much more expensive than other places,
and tasted much worse. I was surprised that a hotdog and a drink cost $7. Also, the hotdog was smaller
than normal hotdogs. So I was a little sad about my meal, and hoped to get something tastier after the
game. But I was happy because the Hawks beat the Eagles by 15 points.
Driving home I talked about how much better my team was than the Eagles. My brother was getting
angry and I noticed he was driving a lot faster than usual. We were lucky he didnt crash. Finally he saw a
police car so he started to drive slower. So we made it home safe and overall it was a great day. Although
we fight, it is a lot more fun going to games with my brother than anyone else.

Alberto Santos Dumont (1873-1932) was born in Brazil and educated in Paris. He made his first
balloon ascent in 1898 and soon after that began constructing dirigible airships. In 1901 he won a Paris air
race and international fame. (After the race, he asked Louis Cartier for a timepiece that would keep his hands
free the first wrist-watch.)
Turning to heavier-than-air machines, Santos-Dumont built his 14-Bis in 1906, three years after the
Wright brothers initial flight. His flight was the first in Europe, and his plane was the first anywhere to lift
off the ground under its own power. In 1909 Santos-Dumont designed the Demoiselle monoplane, the
forerunner of modern light planes.
In 1910 Santos-Dumont fell ill with multiple sclerosis and retired from flying. He returned to Brazil in
1916. III and despondent over the use of aircraft in warfare, he committed suicide in 1932.

SOME in questions You use SOME in affirmatives and ANY in interrogatives and
For the same reason we also use SOME in questions for offerings and requests, because
we are expecting (requests) or encouraging (offers) an affirmative answer:
- Would you like some coffee? (offering)
- Can I have some more sugar, please? (request)
ANY in conditionals We usually use ANY after "if" even in affirmative sentences (but
SOME may also be possible)
- If you see anything strange, tell me.
- If you like any of these books, you can borrow them.
ANY in negatives You can use NO instead of NOT ANY to emphasize the negative
idea.
- I don't need any money = I need no money
- There aren't any people here = There are no people here
careful:
- I don't have no friends here (this is not possible because it is a double negative: NOT +
NO, and double negatives are not possible in standard English)
Notice that we usually make a negative sentence with NOT, but you can also use some
other negative adverbs (never, without, rarely...), so the rule is the same, with negative
adverbs we use ANY and we use NO with positive adverbs:

Chocolate, chocolate, everywhere. Chocolate candy bars, brownies, doughnuts, chocolate milk if it

chocolate? I dont. There are times when nothing else tastes as good as chocolate. Nothing else is so
delicious. Theres even a name for someone who craves chocolate: a chocoholic. Why does chocolate seem
to make everyone feel happy?
Chocolate contains more than 300 known chemical substances, many of them also found in other
foods. Yet, there is something special about chocolate. It contains phenylethylamine, a chemical related to
amphetamines and which is sometimes called the love drug because it quickens your pulse, as if you are
in love. Caffeine, thebromine and other stimulants in chocolate also increase the activity of
neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) in parts of the brain that control out ability to pay attention and stay
alert.

Read the following text and then answer the questions about it.
Sometimes a man is thirsty and wants a drink of water, but he is not able to get it. The man, George
Boyle, of Cleveland, Alabama, is a quadriplegic. He uses an electric wheel chair to get around. He cant move
his arms or legs because his neck was broken in a car accident. So his good friend Gizmo gets the drink for
him.
Gizmo is a helpful, playful female monkey. Gizmo comes from Helping Hands, an organization in
Boston, Massachusetts, that trains capuchin monkeys to help disabled people. Small, clean, friendly, and
intelligent, capuchin monkeys always form good relationships with people. With monkeys to help them,
quadriplegics can live on their own more easily.
Gizmo can open and shut doors, turn pages of a magazine, and do other tasks for Boyle. She can also
bring food and drinks to her owner, help to feed him, and then clean the table. Every morning a social worker
helps Boyle bathe and dress. Then Boyle and Gizmo spend the day together. Friends for five years, Gizmo
often knows what Boyle wants before he asks her. More than a helper to a disabled person, that monkey is
Boyles special little friend.

05) Choose the correct word in bold letters on each of the following sentences.
o Use of English
Use MUST in the meaning strong necessity in the present and future. Replace MUST with HAD TO
for necessity in the past. In a number of cases you can replace MUST with HAVE TO (necessity) or SHOULD
(advice) if you want to sound less categorical. Use dont have to; dont need to if there is no necessity to
do something. If something is prohibited use MUST NOT or MUSTNT.
In some cases the difference between MUST and HAVE TO is bigger than "strong necessity" versus
"necessity". MUST shows that the speaker thinks that the action specified by the main verb is necessary to
do, and it's the right thing to do (i.e., the speaker expresses personal opinion), while HAVE TO just states the
fact that this action is necessary.

Read the following text and then answer the questions about it.
There were four people in a balloon a scientist, a politician, a professional athlete, and an artist.
Their balloon was too heavy and it was coming down over the Atlantic. They had to find a way to avoid falling
into the sea.
The scientist spoke to her companions: We must make the balloon lighter, she said. One of us
must jump out. But who? I must not jump out, the world needs me. The world needs my inventions:
machines and tools to make life easier, and medicines to cure disease. Politician, I think you should jump
out. Youre the heaviest.
Well, the world needs me too, said the politician. I make important decisions. I make the laws
which tell people what they must do and what they must not do. Im a leader, and the world needs leaders,
people who know how to handle power. What about you, athlete?
Who, me?, asked the athlete. Do you think I should jump? But... what would the world do without
me? Life would be boring without physical exercise and the excitement of sports and games. Artist, youre
very quiet. What are you doing?
Im putting one of my pictures in a bottle, answered the artist. When we fall into the sea, we will
probably die, but my picture wont. My books, my paintings, and my music will last much longer than the
scientists machines and the politicians speeches.
The balloon fell into the sea. The athlete started swimming towards the coast two hundred
kilometers away. The scientist floated on her back to save her energy. The politician made his last speech.
And the artist watched his bottle sail away into the sunset.

Computers At School
Cyberspace. The Internet. The World Wide Web. This is the age of information technology.
Computers can offer thousands of learning opportunities to kids and teens in school. But these high-tech
learning tools cost a lot of money. Should schools get with the program and spend more money on
computers? Are computers worth the cost? Read both sides of this debate and decide.
# Module Four Intermediate - (Whats Up Language School) 124
YES!
Computer technology and the Internet are quickly changing the way people work and live
everywhere. Even students in poor communities can get a wealth of learning opportunities from a single
desktop computer. Internet connections can retrieve data from the best libraries and learning resources in
the world. We should bring the power of the information age into all our schools. Computers are a passport
to the future!
NO!
Computers are useful, but they can never substitute for good teachers. Computers are expensive,
and schools will have to spend even more time and money training teachers how to use computers and
computer programs. Besides, computers will never solve problems like underpaid teachers, overcrowded
classrooms, and students who dont want to learn. Instead of spending money on computers, schools should
spend their precious money on basic needs like paying better salaries to their teachers and buying books.

o Lets read?
Read the following text and then answer the questions about it.
The world has sufficient resources to eradicate poverty. It is the unjust distribution of the worlds
resources at international and local level which determines who is poor and who is not.
57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the western hemisphere (North, Central and South America), and
8 Africans.
70 of the 100 would be nonwhite, 30 white.
59% of the entire worlds wealth would be in the hands of only 6 people and all 6 would be citizens
of the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing.
70 would be unable to read.
50 would suffer from malnutrition.
Only 1 would have a college education and
Only 1 would own a computer.
If the worlds leaders decided to put an end to poverty, it would be necessary to attack its root causes,
rather than simply deal with its effects. If they really wanted to take action for justice, they would have to
follow the concept of basic rights. Despite wide differences in culture and in ideas about the individual, the
recognition of basic or moral rights has developed in some form throughout all human societies. Action for
justice has united people in some of the worlds most memorable movements against tyranny and
oppression. These include the fight for rights such as freedom from slavery; the right to vote and take
political action; the right to follow ones own religion without persecution, and many more.
Today one in four of the worlds people lives in a state of absolute want, unable to afford the most
basic shelter, or the minimum food requirements for leading an active, productive life. Despite the fact that
we are all born with rights, these are denied on a massive scale to tens of millions of people around the
world.

PRESENT PERFECT
o Use of English
Present Perfect is a tense formed by have/has + past participle and is used in many
cases, such as:
2) Something that started in the past and continues in the present; we generally use for
and since to express it;
3) When the time is not mentioned, because something happened in the past, but is
important at the time of speaking:
o Lets read?
Read the following text and then answer the questions about it.
Remarkably, inside several of the eggs are the fossilized embryos, or unhatched babies, of dinosaurs
that roamed the Earth 65 to 90 million years ago. The scientists hope the eggs will reveal more about how
dinosaurs lived. Meanwhile, other scientists believe that they have found more evidence of how and why
dinosaurs died.
Scientists in Denmark and Spain have found samples of a substance called chromium on a layer of
Earths crust that dates back to the time when scientists believe dinosaurs became extinct.
Chromium is rare on Earth, but the substance is common in meteors and comets. The layer of
chromium probably came from a comet or a meteorite that slammed into Earth. Many scientists believe that
such an object struck Earth, causing billions of tons of dust and vapor to be thrown into the air, blocking the
suns heat and light. As a result, temperatures around the world dropped. The Earth became cold and dark
and the dinosaurs eventually died.
