"THA DMNE COIIIEDY" is a four movement workbasedon DanteAlighieri'sliteraryclassicof the samename.l

story of Dante'strilogyis very basicrone day Dantefinds himselflost in a dark wood.Virgil,a character basedon I
reveredRomanpoet,appearsand rescues him.VirgilguidesDanteto a contemplation of llell andPurgatory.
Dante,hav
confessed his faults,andwith Beatriceas hisguide,is led into Paradise
andattainsa glimpseof the faceof Cod.
*PURGATORIO" is the secondof four movements in "TtlE DMNE COMEDY." Dante,havingcompleted hisjourr
through "The by
Inferno," is brouglrt Virgilto the shoresof the islandmountainPurgatory in the midstof the south
ocean.Themountainis comprised of,seventerraces, eachrepresenting oneof "sevendeadlysins."ln eachterrace,sinn
are givenan appropriate penancewhichis symbolically tied to their transgressions on earth.Thesufferingsenduredi
accepted voluntarilyby the spiritsin atonement for theirsins.Thecomposer haswoventogethermusicalelementswh
depicteachof the sins of the seventerraces.Forexample, the sin of the first terraceis "pride."Thesoulsplod slo
aroundthe mountain,boweddoubleby hugerockson their backs.As the composition develops, the soundsof lamen
souls,draggingtheirheavyloads,canbeheardagainstthe hauntingmelodicline.

Thesoulsof Purgatory areoftenmusicalbeings:theyexpress their sensationsin songs,hymns,andpsalms.Purga

is the realmof hope,wherethe proud,envious,wrathlul,slothful,prodigal(avaricious),gluttonous,
and lustfulmayatc
for theirsinson earth.As Danteand Virgilcontinueup the mountain,theyfeela violentquakingat whichall of the spi
proclaim"Qloriain excelsis Deol"(Oloryto Codin thehighest).Dantelearnsthat the quakingsignalsthecomiletionof c
