Short-Circuit Current Ratings
Definitions:
Transformer Short circuit An electrical current across an unintended path, often resulting in very large current with
potential to harm personnel or damage to equipment.
Short-circuit current the amount of current able to be delivered during a short-circuit event. Also known
as available fault current.

Conductors
SCCR: The ability of equipment to safely withstand a short-

Inadequate Short-Circuit Protection
Before and after examples of a breaker
where the fault current exceeded its
interrupting rating.

The extent of impact following a short-circuit varies based on many factors,

but impact can include up to the following:
explosions that extend outside the enclosure, resulting exposure to arc
flash
flying debris
shock hazard

Example of a misapplied motor starter

where the fault current exceeds its short-
circuit current rating.

Conductor whip results because of the mechanical forces due to magnetic effect of fault current.
The maximum mechanical force is directly proportion to the instantaneous peak current (IP). Test
5 illustrates the reduction in mechanical forces versus that of Test 4. The reduction in force by
use of the 200A current-limiting fuse is (10.2/48.1)2; which is approximately 1/25.

Tips on using current-limiting devices
SCCR is much easier and cost-effective to address in the DESIGN phase as opposed to the
INSTALLATION phase.

1
Know the range of potential fault currents where your equipment may be installed.

2
Design equipment for worst case or with an alternate BOM to address worst-case SCCR.

3
Use available tools to assist in calculation, addressing weak spots, and documenting
SCCR.

SCCR: 5,000
amps

Inadequate SCCR on installation of new refrigeration equipment required significant effort to resolve, resulting in delays
and larger project costs.
No requirement in equipment spec.
Standard equipment was rated 5 kA.
Actual fault current calculated was 35.5 kA.
Inspector failed installation inspection.
Raising SCCR required changing out most components.
OEM elected to install isolation transformer to lower fault current.
Inadequate SCCR resulted in larger project costs, a delayed opening of the store and subsequent lost revenue.

Case Study Vertical Seal Machine
An OEM approached Bussmann by Eaton for assistance with determining
the SCCR of their vertical form fill seal machine, and suggestions on how it
could be raised to 65 kA.
The Bussmann series product Application Engineering team provided a free
SCCR analysis.
The team performed an SCCR analysis and determined the panels design
possessed just a 5 kA SCCR.

The team applied the component SCCRs based on the circuit protective
devices used, as well as the impact of the current limiting devices in the
circuit. The analysis revealed the following, identifying which components
must be addressed to achieve the desired 65 kA equipment SCCR value:
1) The miniature circuit breakers/supplementary protectors, rated at 10 kA
must be replaced with overcurrent protective devices having an interrupting
rating not less than 65 kA and with comparable dimensions.

Option 2 was selected as it met all of the
design needs for this application
Considering the size, functionality and
costs of these existing components, the
Bussmann series Compact Circuit
Protector (CCP) solution, with KTK-R
Class CC fuses, provided the best
solution when compared with a molded
case circuit breaker or a fuse and fuse
block solution.
This component substitution not only
raised the interrupting rating to 200 kA, it
did so without any significant impact on
costs or the panel layout.
