Experiment-4

Object: Problems leading to analysis of axisymmetric solids

Problem Definition

A closed cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure


pressure p=1MPa as shown in Figure 4.1. 4 The
modulus of elasticity is, E= 200 GPa and Poisson's ratio is, =0.3. Axisymmetric option is
selected for element behavior. One material model is defined. Solid Modeling approach is
employed. The axial and hoop stresses in the cylinder wall are determined and plotted in multiple
windows.

Procedure

1. Launch the Ansys (Mechanical APDL)


2. In the utility menu, select File > Change Jobname..
On the change Jobname dialog box, enter "Closed_Cylinder" as a new jobname and turn on New
log and error files?
Click OK
3. Utility Menu > File > Change Title..
On the change title dialog box, enter 'Analysis of Closed Cylinder under Pressure' as the new title
and click OK to accept the title.
4. Utility Menu > Plot > Replot
5. Main Menu > Preferences>
Preferences Structural
6. Main Menu > Preprocessor > Element Type > Add/Edit/Delete
Add..
On the dialog box, select Quad 8 Node 82 for Structural solid
OK
Option.
Select Axisymmetric from the element behavior
OK
7. Main Menu > Preprocessor > Material Props > Material Model
Click on Structural > Linear > Elastic
Elasti > Isotropic
On the dialog box, type 2E5 in EX and 0.3 in PRXY

Click OK
Close the dialog box
8. Main Menu > Preprocessor > Modeling > Create > Keypoints > In Active CS
On the dialog box, enter 1 for Keypoint Number and (0, 0, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active CS.
Click Apply
On the dialog box, enter 2 for Keypoint Number and (50, 0, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active
CS.
Click Apply
On the dialog box, enter 3 for Keypoint Number and (50, 240, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active
CS.
Click Apply
On the dialog box, enter 4 for Keypoint Number and (0, 240, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active
CS.
Click Apply
On the dialog box, enter 5 for Keypoint Number and (0, 220, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active
CS.
Click Apply
On the dialog box, enter 6 for Keypoint Number and (34, 220, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active
CS.
Click Apply
On the dialog box, enter 7 for Keypoint Number and (34, 20, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active
CS.
Click Apply
On the dialog box, enter 8 for Keypoint Number and (0, 20, 0) for X, Y, Z Location in Active
CS.
Click Apply
Close the dialog box
9. Main Menu > Preprocessor > Modeling > Create > Areas > Arbitrary > Thru KPs
Pick Keypoints 1 to 8 in the same order
Click OK
10. Main Menu > Preprocessor > Meshing > Mesh Tool
On the dialog box, select Areas form the Set
Turn on Smart Size
Slide the bar up to 1
Select Tri for Shape
Mesh
Pick All
11. Main Menu > Preprocessor > Loads > Define Loads > Apply > Structural > Displacement >
Symmetric B.C. > On Lines
Pick lines 4 and 8
Click OK
12. Main Menu > Preprocessor > Loads > Define Loads > Apply > Structural > Pressure > On
Lines
Pick lines 5, 6 and 7
Click OK
On the dialog box, enter 1 for Load PRES Value
Click OK
13. Utility Menu > PlotCtrls > Style > Symmetric Expansion > 2D Axisymmetric..
Select 3/4 Expansion for Select Expansion Amount
Click OK
And switch to Isometric view
14. Main Menu > Solution > Solve > Current LS
Click OK

Close the dialog boxes


Click On SAVE_DB
15. Utility Menu > PlotCtrls > Multi-Window-Layout
On the dialog box, select Two (Left-Right) for Window Layout
Click OK
16. Utility Menu > PlotCtrls > Erase Options > Erase Screen
17. Utility Menu > PlotCtrls > Erase Option > Erase Between plots
And, also ensure that the Erase between Plots option is unselected
18. Utility Menu > PlotCtrls > Window Controls > Window On or Off..
On the dialog box, turn off window 2
Click OK
19. Main Menu > General Postproc > Plot Results > Nodal Solu > Nodal solution > Stress > Y-
Component of Stress> Click OK on the dialog box
20. Utility Menu > PlotCtrls > Window Controls > Window On or Off..
On the dialog box, turn off window 1 and turn on window 2
Click OK
21. Main Menu > General Postproc > Plot Results > Nodal Solu > Nodal Solution > Stress > Z -
Component of Stress > Click OK on the dialog box

22. Utility Menu > File > Exit.

On the dialog box, select Save Everything

Click OK

Results:

(a) Maximum Axial Stress = 5.022 N/mm2


(b) Maximum hoop Stress = 2.853 N/mm2
