Problem 1
Convert the following to dBm and dBW or dBV and dBV appropriately.

1. 52W
2. 93kW

3. 36V
4. 20mV

5. 300W
6. 10mW

7. 22V

Example
32W = 45.05dBm, 15.05dBW
68V = 36.65dBV, 156.65dBV

Problem 2
Determine the absolute values in the indicated units

1. 16dBW (mW)

2. 20dB

3. 60dBV (V)

4. 76dBm (W)

5. 78dBV/m (V/m)

6. -80dBm (W)
7. 37dB

8. 30dBmV (mV)

Example
15.05dBW (W) = 32W
36.65dBV (V) = 6.8 105 V

Problem 3
Equivalent isotropic radiated power of a transmitter is 43dBW (i.e., EIRP = 43dBW). Find
1. Equivalent isotropic radiated power in terms of kW.
2. Assuming 37dBi antenna gain, determine antenna directivity in absolute units. (For isotropic antenna,
gain is equal to its directivity ).

3. Transmitter power in watts, given EI RP = Pt Gt

EC60101 : Assignment #1 Problem 4

Problem 4
Calculate the output power of an amplifier having gain of 35dB when the input power is 72dBm.
(Express the answer in dBm)

Problem 5
A 100ft coaxial cable has a loss of 4.5dB/100 ft. What should be the input power (in dBW) to the system
for it to have an output of -74dBm

Problem 6
Consider the power sources having powers 20dBm, 7dBW and 1kW respectively. Calculate the total power
(in dBm, dBW and kW) if the sources are combined.

Problem 7
Consider a 4-stage system with gain of each stage being 10dB, 20dB, 14dB and 7dB respectively.

1. Calcuate the overall gain.

2. What would be the overall gain of the same system if a lossy component having a loss of 12dB is
introduced between the 2nd and 3rd stage.

3. What would be the overall gain of the same system if a lossy component having a loss of 2dB is
introduced between the 3rd and 4th stage.

4. If the input to the system is 10W, what would be the output power (in watts) considering both the
lossy components of 12dB and 2dB.

5. For the same system, what would be the output power (in mW) if there are two input sources of 37dBm
and 7dBW.

Problem 8
Losses in a satellite link are given as follows:

(a) Path Loss = 196.5 dB

(b) Edge of beam loss for satellite antenna = 3.0 dB

(c) Clear air atmospheric loss = 0.2 dB

(d) Attenuation due to rain = 5.0 dB

(e) Feeder loss = 2.0 dB

Calculate the total loss in the link.

Problem 9
The earth station transmitter power and antenna gain is 28.3dBW and 55.7dB respectively. The satellite
antenna gain is 31.0dB. The free space path loss is 207.2dB. Additional losses account for 3.0dB. Calculate
the received power at transponder using the Friss equation
Pt G t G r
Pr =
Losses

Problem 10
The overall (C/N)0 is given by
1 1 1
= +
(C/N )0 (C/N )up (C/N )down

1. Calculate the overall (C/N) ratio if the (C/N)up ratio is 97.7dB and (C/N)down ratio is 47.8dB.
The link budget equation can be written as
C
= [EI RP ] + G [Losses] [k] [B]
N T

2. For the calculated overall (C/N) in (1), find the EIRP of the transmitting antenna when [G/T] is
-8.0dB, losses in the link is 198.5dB and noise bandwidth [B] is 1Hz. k is the Boltzmanns constant.

* Terms in equations enclosed in square brackets [ ] means they are expressed in decibels.

3. If the transmitting antenna has a gain of 130dB, find the transmitted power (in dBW)

Problem 11
An Earth Station situated in the Docklands of London, England, needs to calculate the look angle to geostationary
satellite in the Indian ocean operated by Intelsat the details are
Earth station latitude and longitude are 52.0 degree North and 0 degree
Satellite longitude is 66 degree East
Find Elevation angle and azimuth angle

Problem 12
A PSLV, launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (13.7N, 80.2E) with 102 0 azimuth,
placed a satellite in GTO of 250 Km perigee height and apogee height same as GEO
