TECHNIQUES IN PHYSICS LABORATORY

Activity 1: Refraction and reflection of light (virtual lab)

Introduction

In this activity you are required to study and verify some of the phenomena related to
refraction and reflection of light. You are advised to read some extra materials in
Giancoli, D.C. (2005). Physics: Principle with Application (6th Ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ:
Prentice Hall, chapter on refraction and reflection of light

Objectives:

To determine
The refactive index, n of material
(A) mystery A
(B) mystery B

The critical angle, C of material

(A) mystery A
(B) mystery B
For two cases water/mystery material and glass/mystery material

Procedures

3) You have to work out and be familar with the simulation.

4) You have to design and perform your experiment yourself with the aim to answer
the objectives. Use the simulation.

Report: You need to write a full report individually for this activity. Your report
should consist of:

B. Summary of the experiment

II.THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

III.EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND PROCEDURE

A. Description of the apparatus
B. Description of the experimental procedure

IV.ANALYSIS
A. Method of analysis
B. Presentation of results
C. Discussion of results
D. (Optional) Suggestions for future improvements

V. CONCLUSIONS
A. Summary of the results
B. Pertinence of the results to the questions raised in the introduction
