Parallel Wireless CWS-210 Data Sheet

Overview

CWS-210 is. CWS-210, an in-vehicle small cell from Parallel Wireless, is an eNodeB/Wi-Fi Access
point with integrated flexible backhaul that is small enough to fit in the trunk of a car and powerful
enough to extend coverage where it was previously difficult to cover. The in-vehicle small cells can
be also installed on public transit to provide wireless coverage for transit passenger and enable M2M
like fleet management for transit companies, or enable a smart passenger car. Self-configuration and
self-optimization capabilities of HetNet Gateway (HNG) from Parallel Wireless enable these in-
vehicle units to create new use cases for small cells, including Bring Your Own Coverage and
enabling smart cities.

It provides control, security, and traffic prioritization along with the unique capability to extend or
create coverage anywhere, including in-building, rural, etc. to enable performance critical Public
Safety, Military, and local government multimedia and data communications via Bring Your Own
Coverage (BYOC) capability. BYOC capability addresses coverage shortfalls from geographical or
building limitations to network outages and emergency circumstances. The CWS eNodeB can extend
nearby macro coverage into areas with no coverage like underground parking garages, basements,
etc., and also enable Ad Hoc network when network infrastructure do not exist or is compromised.
With flexible mounting options, the hardware can be easily installed in any emergency or public
transit vehicle.

The nodes are self-configured and self-managed via HetNet Gateway (HNG) from Parallel Wireless
and can be deployed and maintained without any specialized staff.

In addition to the BYOC capabilities enabled by this in-vehicle unit, it also helps to enable the smart
cities/nations. Since todays mobile users expect to stay connected all the time, transportation and
technology are important components of smart cities. Users who use public transportation often times
look for ways to pass the time or get work done while in transit. In-vehicle Small Cells orchestrated
by HNG enable customers to enjoy the benefits of a seamless wireless experience while onboard a
bus equipped with these mobile base stations. By minimizing the footprint of the equipment to be
placed on the transit vehicle (bus, train, truck, etc.), very little change to the vehicle structure is
required, a key consideration for transit operators as major structural changes could potentially impact
vehicle warranty. As the in-vehicle unit is capable of using any macro backhaul (3G/4G/4G+) as the
vehicle moves along the route, backhaul reliability is also enhanced, resulting in a more consistent
end-user experience with no dropped data sessions, online game disconnections or interruptions to
the users video streaming. HNG also manages end-user mobility between licensed/unlicensed and
seamless handoffs when users enter/leave the transportation vehicle.

The in-vehicle unit aggregates all user traffic as one stream, which is given traffic priority for
enhanced QoS. The use of carrier aggregation for backhaul also significantly increases the overall
pipe (up to 150 Mbps versus 50 Mbps), which will allow multiple passengers to enjoy bandwidth-
intensive activities such as video streaming simultaneously, compared to other services which can
only support low-bandwidth activities such as e-mail or web browsing.

Business customers will benefit from M2M services including Analytics enabled by in-vehicle Small
Cell orchestrated by HNG. Fleet operators, for instance, can use automated fleet management service
to monitor fleet health, automate dispatch for maintenance, dynamically re-route fleet in case of
congested roads, and share real-time schedule updates on bus stops and via texts with transit
passengers. These M2M capabilities, enabled by the same small cell on the bus (or train, or boat), can
help them reduce operating expenditure and make more efficient use of their fleet.
