1
Recommended: It is recommended that you read business press like the Wall Street Journal,
Business Week, Fortune, etc. regularly. As a business major, youll need to be fluent in the
language of business. These publications are great ways to practice that fluency.

Course Prerequisites
You should have basic accounting, including an understanding of accounting terms and financial
statements from BMGT 220 and 221, statistics, including probability, regression analysis,
calculating mean and standard deviation from BMGT 230 or 231, and algebra (high school
algebra I provides the math basics you will use most in this class).

Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide you with a basic foundation in corporate finance. You'll
build on this foundation if you continue to take finance courses and courses in other business
disciplines and as you work with finance concepts in your life after graduation. You'll also use
these concepts if you choose to develop your own personal investment portfolio. The course
includes:
review of accounting principles as they apply to corporate finance
the financial environment of business
valuation of projects, companies, and investment securities
how a business allocates financial resources in an uncertain environment to maximize
shareholder wealth.
After completing the course, you should have gained an intuitive comprehension of
financial concepts and analysis, an understanding of current issues in financial
management, and the knowledge that all areas of finance are firmly rooted in valuation.

Course Design
This is a team coordinated course and a blended learning course. This course substitutes a web-
based integrated homework and tutorial system for some of the in-class time and utilizes small
collaborative learning groups to help you to learn finance. This is based on the notion that you
need to practice finance to "learn" finance and to "think" finance. When you are not in the face-
to-face class, you will spend time on interactive online course content including recorded video
lectures, problem practice, and other online activities using primarily a program called,
MyFinanceLab (MFL).

Blended learning, as the name implies, is a course with both online and face to face components.
Studies have found that online students perform better in lower levels of learning knowledge
and comprehension. Online provides an advantage you can go over the material when and
where you want and can repeat a lecture if you didnt understand the first time through. Face to
face is better for higher levels of learning application, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis.
BMGT 340 is the beginning finance class, so there is a fair amount of terminology and basics that
need to be mastered before proceeding to the higher levels of learning. This class is designed to
be the best of both worlds online lecture material that you can do at a time of your choosing,
plus face to face classes to go over problems and discuss the material.

The following learning aids will be used in the course:

1) Chapter Online Intro Videos, where the finance material may be viewed in short videos that
you will watch BEFORE coming to the face-to-face class.

2
2) MyFinanceLab, where you will do homework problems to learn the material, review your
personalized Study Plan to see where you need to do more work and get individualized feedback,
and take final chapter quizzes on the material.
3) Learning Catalytics, where you will respond to questions asked during class and receive
instant feedback on your understanding of the material.
4) Office Hours, staffed by TAs who will give you assistance in doing your MyFinanceLab
problems and completing the project assignments. Please see Elms for TA office hours and
location.

Course Requirements
25% each (250 points each) Three exams, held in the evening for all sections
25% (Optional) Final exam
10% (100 points) Finance Project (set of 3 assignments)
5% (50 points) Clicker participation and credit; video quizzes
10% (100 points) MyFinanceLab Quizzes and Homework
Extra Credit (2.0% max) Extra credit points for MFL study plan and assessments

There is a total of 1000 points in the course. The specifics of each component of the course
are given below:

Exams (75% of grade)

Exams will be held for 2 hours in the evening (main exam and make up date). Please
clear your schedule now to keep exam dates open. Exams will be a combination of
multiple choice/problems/essays.

The final exam is optional. If you have taken all three exams and are satisfied with your grades
prior to the final, you may choose not to take the final. If you choose to take the final, then it will
replace your mid-semester exam with the lowest grade. If you score lower on the final exam than
on any of the three mid-semester exams, then the final exam will not count.

If you are absent from one of the three in-class exams, you must take the final exam, and the final
will count for the missing exam. If you have missed one mid-semester exam, then the final will
count 25%. If you've missed two mid-semester exams, the final will count 50%. If you've
missed all three mid-semester exams, the final will count 75%. Note that if you take all three
exams, the final exam will only replace one grade, your lowest grade it will not replace more
than one exam grade. Because all of the sections are taking the same exam on the same evening,
there will be a make up exam day scheduled the next night for each mid-semester exam.

Exam grades will be curved, if needed. Exams with answers and grades with the curve included
will also be posted on Elms.

You can bring one 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper to each exam, one side only, with anything written on
it that you like. The sheet can be handwritten or typed. You can bring all three sheets with you if
you decide to take the final exam.

You may review your exam for two weeks after taking the exam. Please email your assigned
TA to set up an appointment to review your exam. After two weeks,
exams/projects/assignments will not be reviewed. Exams will be returned on request.

3
If the University is officially closed on the date an examination is scheduled, the exam will be
held on the next class meeting date.

All students exams will be picked up by the professors and TAs when the exam time has expired.
If you do not turn in your exam when this last call is made, you will receive a zero on the exam.

MyFinanceLab (Online HW, Study Plan, and Quizzes) (10% of grade)

MFL provides you with unlimited practice of finance problems because the programs are
regenerated algorithmically to give you unlimited opportunity for practice and mastery. In
addition, when you are having trouble with your homework problems, you can get instant
feedback with the study aids including "Help me solve this" tutorials, "View an example," and
links to the exact spot in the eText that addresses the learning objective of the problem. MFL
also contains numerous tutorials and learning aids such as step-by-step instructions, input-specific
feedback, hints, many problems that link to spreadsheets, and sample problems.
Personalized Study Plan: This is the customized adaptive learning component of MFL. You
can monitor your own progress in mastering the material and see at a glance exactly which
topics you need more practice on. You are provided targeted practice where you will take
practice tests for each chapter. The study plan evaluates your initial understanding of the
material. With the results from these tests, and from the homework assigned by instructors,
MFL continually generates your personalized Study Plan so you can focus your study efforts
and practice any areas you still need to review before you take the final quiz for each chapter.
The Study Plan monitors your performance on homework and quizzes and continuously
makes recommendations based on that performance and that is why it is called adaptive
learning. For example, if you are struggling with Time Value of Money, or having trouble
mastering critical finance concepts, the Study Plan will provide customized remediation
activities--based on your personal proficiencies, number of attempts, or difficulty of
questions--to get you back on track. In order to do well in the course, it is imperative that
you work on those concepts that the study plan indicates you need more help on before
you take the chapter quizzes and exams for that material. You will receive 1 point extra
credit for every 4 mastery points earned in the personalized study plan up to a
maximum of 20 extra credit points.

Dynamic Study Modules. These work by continuously assessing student performance and
activity, then using data and analytics to provide personalized content in real-time to reinforce
concepts that target each students particular strengths and weaknesses. Dynamic Study
Module, accessed by computer, smartphone or tablet, are designed to promote fast learning
and long-term retention. The free app is Pearson Mylab/Mastering. Here is a link to the
video about Dynamic Study Modules: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ETWF9S5KwU

Homework Practice Assignments: There will be a homework assignment for every chapter
covered in the course on MFL. They will not count toward your final grade, but you must
complete them (with a score of at least 80%) in order for you to do the weekly quiz. Failure to
do the HW with a grade of at least 80% will result in your inability to do that week's quiz.
You can work these HW problems as often as you like with study aids provided on MFL. You
will receive immediate feedback on any problem so you can learn how to do the problems.
Essentially, you should get 100% on your homework assignments. No late HW assignments
will be accepted.

Quizzes: There will be a quiz for each chapter covered in the course on MFL. We will count
only the top 10 quiz scores toward your grade. You will have 2 chances to do each quiz and

4
we will count your top score only. In order to access and take the quiz, you must achieve an
80% or better on the homework assignment for that chapter. The quizzes are due as indicated
in the assignment schedule posted on elms under the Homework/Quizzes Tab Folder. No late
quizzes will be accepted for a grade.

Please dont wait until the last minute to complete your homework,
quizzes or to study for an exam. The professors or your TAs may not be
available to respond to homework questions or exam questions at the
last minute.
Learning Catalytics and Video Quizzes (5% of grade)
Each class period, we will ask questions that you will be required to answer using your mobile
device. You will receive both participation points (for answering the questions) and performance
points (for getting these questions correct), and receive a daily average grade. We will keep your
best 12 learning catalytics daily average grades (drop about 4-6 of your lowest daily average
grades, we will determine your learning catalytics grade in the following manner: (Overall
average daily score*30).

Each chapter video has a question associated with it. You will get the most out of classes when
you are prepared when you have watched the videos and read the chapter before coming to
class. You will need to answer the video quiz question before the class period where the chapter
will be discussed. We will also keep your best 12 video quizzes for a grade.

Project Assignments (10% of grade)

You will be working on three short finance project assignments throughout the semester using a
"real-world company" that will be assigned to you. All projects must be submitted through Elms,
showing all work including formulas. More on this assignment will be given to you later.

Extra Credit (maximum: 2.0%)

You will receive 1 extra credit point for each 4 mastery points earned in the MFL study plan up to
a total of 20 extra credit points (2.0%).

Course Grades
Grades will be posted throughout the semester. Please note that there are 500 students in this
course, and unfortunately mistakes can happen when grades are entered. Email your professor
immediately if there is a problem with your posted grade, but no later than 2 weeks after a
grade due date. If you contact us at the end of the semester for missing grades, those grades
will not be adjusted. Note also that if there is a curve on an exam, the curved grade (raw score
with points added) is the grade that is posted.

The Smith School of Business offers rigorous, academically-challenging courses and provides
meaningful feedback on student performance to facilitate learning. Transparency and consistency
in grading are important elements that ensure the integrity of the curriculum. The Smith
School expects a grade point average of approximately 3.10 for 300-level BMGT core
courses.

Grades will include pluses and minuses as per the official university grading policy. Your final
grade will be an average based on 100%, with 93 as the cutoff for an A, 89.5 as the cutoff for an
A-, 87 for a B+, 83 for a B, 79.5 for a B-, 77 for a C+, 73 for a C, 69.5 for a C-, 59.5 for a D.

Please see the plus/minus grading policy on Testudo.

Course Materials and TAs

Course materials including power point lecture notes, helpful web sites, and other course
information are posted on Elms. Please check Elms regularly for updates. To get the most out
of class, you must come to class having read the chapter and watched the introductory video for
each chapter. Then on the days indicated in the syllabus, you should complete the online
MyFinanceLab homework assignments and quizzes. The TAs are valuable resources for the
course. They will hold regular office hours in the computer lab (VMH 3318) and office hours in
the TA office (VMH 1318) with assigned times, and will be available to review exams, help with
the project assignments and homework assignments and answer questions about the course
material. While you will be assigned a TA based on your last name, feel free to go to any TAs
office hours, even if the TA is not your assigned TA, and email for help.

Course Policies
Honor Code and Academic Integrity
The Universitys Code of Academic Integrity is designed to ensure that the principles of academic
honesty and integrity are upheld. All students are expected to adhere to this code. The Smith
School does not tolerate academic dishonesty. All acts of academic dishonesty will be dealt with
in accordance with the provisions of this code. Please visit the following web site for more
information on the Universitys Code of Academic Integrity:
http://www.studenthonorcouncil.umd.edu/code.html. On each exam you will be asked to write
out and sign the following pledge: I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any
authorized assistance on this exam/assignment.

Classroom Policies
Please be considerate of the other students in the room. This means not talking, rustling papers,
etc. during class. We understand emergency needs, but please refrain from leaving early and
arriving late if possible. The slamming door is very distracting. However, the professors prefer
that you arrive late or leave early rather than not attend.

340 Tutoring
The Academic Achievement Programs (AAP) offers free tutoring for BMGT 340 students. If you
are interested in tutoring, contact Christine Duchouquette, Educational Support Specialist and
Tutorial Coordinator, Marie Mount 2204B, 301-405-4745, cduchou@umd.edu..

Special Needs
Any student with special needs or special accommodations needs because of disabilities should
bring this to your professors attention as soon as possible, but no later than the second week of
class. You should also inform your professor in advance of any intended absences for religious
observances or absences due to athletics or university activities.

Inclement Weather Policy

In case of inclement weather, check the University of Maryland homepage or call 301 405-
SNOW to check on cancellation status. If classes are cancelled, schedules will be adjusted
accordingly. It is very unlikely that exam dates will be changed from the dates stated in the
syllabus. It is possible that the material covered on the exam might be adjusted.

Absence Policies

6
The university has a new policy for absences, approved in May 2011. The complete policy can
be found at: http://www.president.umd.edu/policies/v100g.html. For a single absence, The
University will accept as an excused absence a self-signed note from a student who has missed a
single lecture, recitation, or laboratory, attesting to the date of the illness. The note must also
contain an acknowledgement by the student that the information is true and correct and that
providing false information is prohibited under Code of Student Conduct. The student is also
obligated to make a reasonable attempt to inform the instructor of his/her illness in advance.
Students who miss more than a single class, whether consecutive or non-consecutive misses or
experience an illness during a Major Scheduled Grading Event, shall be required to provide
written documentation of the illness from the Health Center or from an outside health care
provider. In cases where written verification is provided, the Health Center or outside health care
provider shall verify dates of treatment and indicate the time frame that the student was unable to
meet academic responsibilities. The student is also obligated to make a reasonable attempt to
inform the instructor of his/her illness in advance.

Tentative Class Schedule

Please note that this class schedule is tentative. The most up to date calendar will be kept on the
web site. Consult this calendar frequently!! It will tell you what we're doing in class that day,
what assignments are due, etc.
