Closed Surfaces and Voxel Math Functions

In Oasis montaj 8.5 and Target 8.5 you can now close isosurfaces by wrapping the surface around a range of values, or by selecting all the values above
or below a specific cut-off value.

These closed surfaces can be used in voxel math calculations. The Voxel Math Expression Builder tool (under 3D > Voxel Math...) has new options to
work open and closed surfaces.

You can apply surfaces in the expression so that your result reflects intersections, proximity, or enclosure. Use these functions to build voxel models
from your geology models and attribute geological properties and values to them, or use them as constraints for VOXI inversions. For example, you can

specify volumes on both sides of a surface feature such as a fault (open) or isosurface (closed) based on the distance from the surface.

New Channel Math Functions

There are a number of new channel math functions in the latest release for Oasis montaj 8.5 and Target 8.5.

You can find them in the Channel Math Expression Builder under Database Tools > Channel Math... Expand the Operators and Functions
section to see the new options.

Additional string operators

There are several string operators for common tasks like concatenate: C0 = catstr(C1,C2)
This String tab is visible if your database contains channels of type String. There are also string functions for truncation and comparison.

Statistical information
Use values from the channel statistics for all, selected, or the current line such as min, max, or mean.

Access data on offset rows

Use the value in the next row in your expression: C0 = C1- C2.offset(1);
or the value in the first or last row of the line: C0 = C1.at(0)+ C2

Random number generator

This operator will generate random numbers between a given range: C0 = randbetween(0,5)

Geosoft - Exploring With Data: Target http://moncompte.orange.cd/servlet/redirect.srv/sruj/scpzebsv/sjyhfw/p...

Find this option in the Special operators tab.

Access elements in an array channel

The desired elements of an array can be placed within square brackets: CO=C1[1]+C2[5].

Calculating a Moving Average

This tip to calculate a Moving Average for drillhole assays was shared by my colleague. Thanks JoseLuis!

Mean average calculation in a drillhole assay database

1. Select the assay database.

2. Select Database Tools > Filters > Rolling Statistics...
3. Select the assay Channel to analyze and enter a name for the new moving average channel in Output statistics channel. Select Mean in Statistics
to calculate. Enter a value in Window width for select the number of analyses to calculate the mean value. To reduce the border effect select yes
in Shrink window at ends.
4. Visualize your moving average calculation in the Database Profile window or in a striplog.

Statistics: Three ways to view stats for your data

There are several ways to view statistics of your database or channel values. Here are three that I often use:

1. Channel Stats. Click twice on the channel name to highlight the current line (or drillhole); click three times to include all the selected lines in the
database. Then right click to access "Statistics".

The same information can be accessed via Database Tools > Report > Mark Statistics. This menu has Line/Channel Report and Total Distance too!

2. Advanced Statistics are available in some extensions. Look in Database Tools > Geostatistics Toolkit > Summary Statistics.

In the Geochemistry menu, this is found under GeochemAnalysis > Summary Statistics.

3. Another option in GeochemAnalysis > Save Statistics will save stats for all channels directly to a CSV file.

Share a 3D View
Did you know...

... you can easily share a 3D View with others in a way that allows them to interact with the data the same way that you do.

1. From the 3D Viewer, export your 3D view to a "Geosoft 3DV File".

2. Import the Geosoft 3DV File directly into a new 3D View in Oasis montaj, Target, Target for ArcGIS, or in the Oasis montaj Free Viewer (available for
download here).

Tips from Roundup 2014

Geosoft - Exploring With Data: Target http://moncompte.orange.cd/servlet/redirect.srv/sruj/scpzebsv/sjyhfw/p...

If you missed our User Group Meeting at the Roundup in Vancouver, then we missed you!

We presented some of the new additions to IP, along with wireframing editing and snapping improvements and positive and negative Iterative
Reweighing Inversion Focusing (IRIF) in VOXI. We also showed these five tips:

Drag and Drop

If you drag files (such as databases and maps) into your workspace, the datasets will open and appear in your Project Explorer. I recently learned that
you can drag and drop right into the Project Explorer and the files are added, but they don't open! I have found this to be very handy for grids which are
then listed in grid tools as recently used files but the grids are not displayed when I add them this way.

Project Explorer Delete

You can Remove datasets from your project using the Project Explorer, and new in 8.1 you can also Delete datasets. This will delete the file along with
supporting files like the GRD.GI or XML metadata files, so that you can keep your project folder organized. The ability to Rename a dataset through the
Project Explorer will be available soon.

Group Maker

Database Channels and Map Groups often have a "maker" in the right-mouse menu. Makers remember the parameters used to create the group or
channel, so they are handy if the menu option has been used a few times and the default parameters there have changed.

Enter = Exact Position

Using the Enter key on a map will display the position of the cursor in the Exact Position dialog. You can also type an x,y position in the dialog; click
[OK] and the Shadow Cursor will go to that location. This also works in 3D. Toggle the 3D cursor on and press Enter in the 3D Viewer. This will show

the location of the 3D cursor, and you can type a new location here too, like a drill target for instance, and the cursor will move to that spot.

Cross Reference Points and Intervals

This question has come up a few times: How do I find out what rock unit contains each point (structure, physical property, etc)? This is explained in
more detail in a previous post.

What interval is this structure in?

You have some drillhole point values, such as structures or physical property measurements, and you would like to cross reference your drillhole
project tables to see what lithological interval these readings are contained by.

You can do this in two quick steps! Here's how.

Let's assume that you have DH_Depth and Structure channels in Drilling_Structure.GDB, and you have DH_From, DH_To, and Lithology
channels in Drilling_Geology.GDB, and you want Drilling_Structure.GDB to contain DH_Depth, Structure and Lithology.

The Geology database may have intervals of varying lengths where DH_East, DH_North, and DH_RL locations are calculated for the midpoint of each
interval. In this situation, cross referencing with the point Structures may provide the closest Geology interval rather than the containing interval.

You can use the Composite Database option to get smaller, regular intervals that you can use to cross reference the point or Structure readings.

1. DH-Data > Composite Database

This option will create a new from-to database that will serve as the lookup database for the Geology intervals. Select the option for Best-fit
lithological interval.

Composite Database
The default is to create a new from-to database with a reading every 1m. You may decide to use a smaller interval if the Structure point readings are very
dense and/or your Geology intervals already very small. If needed, you can apply a Difference Filter to get an idea of your interval lengths, or plot the
original and new geology channels.

Geosoft - Exploring With Data: Target http://moncompte.orange.cd/servlet/redirect.srv/sruj/scpzebsv/sjyhfw/p...

2. Database Tools > Database Utilities > Cross-Database Channel Lookup

Select the Structure point database containing the structural or physical property depth readings so that it is the active database and then run Cross-
Database Channel Lookup.

Choose the new composite geology database as the Lookup database, use DH_RL as the Reference channel and Nearest as the Lookup method.

Database Lookup
Your result will be a geology text value for each structural point value.
