GuidelinesforPhDPlanofWork(POW)Worksheet

Worksheets have been created to help students see how their coursework will meet the PhD
requirements.ItisbasedontherequirementslistedintheECEGraduateHandbook,whichareincluded
inanabbreviatedformatbelow.Anexampleofhowtousethisworksheet,alongwithablankworksheet
that students can use, can be found on the following pages. There are separate worksheets for PhD
studentswithanNCSUMSdegreewithcontinuousenrollmentandforPhDstudentswithaNonNSCUMS
degreeoraNCSUMSdegreewithoutcontinuousenrollment.

I.MinimumDegreeRequirements
1. ThePhDPlanofWorkmusthaveatleast72credithours,includingMScredithours.
2. ECE600isamandatory1credithourcourseforgraduatestudentsenrolledintheCPEandEE
programs.ThisrequirementwillbewaivedforstudentswithapreviousdegreefromNCState.
3. ForPhDstudentswithonlyaBSdegree:
a) Aminimumof30gradedcredithoursmustbecompletedatNCSU.
b) Aminimumof18gradedcredithoursofECEcoursesmustbecompletedatNCSU.
4. ForPhDstudentswithanNCSUMSdegreeinEE,CPE,CPSE,orCNE:
Withcontinuousenrollment:GradedcoursesfromtheMSdegreemeetPhDgradedcourse
requirementsandcanbeincludedonthePhDplanofwork.
Withoutcontinuousenrollment:Amaximumof18gradedcredithoursfromtheMSdegreecanbe
includedonthePhDplanofworkandtherearenootherPhDgradedcourserequirements.
5. ForPhDstudentswithanNCSUMSdegreeinanonECEdepartment:
Withcontinuousenrollment:GradedcoursesfromtheMSdegreemeetPhDgradedcourse
requirementsandcanbeincludedonthePhDplanofwork.
a) Aminimumof30gradedcredithoursmustbecompletedatNCSU.
b) Aminimumof6gradedcredithoursofECEcoursesmustbecompletedatNCSU.
Withoutcontinuousenrollment:Amaximumof18gradedcredithoursfromtheMSdegree
canbeincludedonthePhDplanofworkandaminimumof6gradedcredithoursofECE
coursesmustbecompletedatNCSU.
6. ForPhDstudentswithaNonNCSUMSdegree:
a) Amaximumof18credithoursfromthepreviousMSdegreecanbeincludedinthePhD
PlanofWork.
b) Aminimumof12gradedcredithoursmustbecompletedatNCSU.
c) Aminimumof6gradedcredithoursofECEcoursesmustbecompletedatNCSU.

II.PlanofWorkRequirements
1. Depth:Two700levelECEcourses(minimumofsixcredithours)mustbecompletedatNCSU.
Atleastoneofthese700levelcoursesmustbeinthestudentsmajor(EEorCPE).This
requirementcannotbemetwithnonECE700levelcourses.
2. ResearchCredits:ECE833,834,and895.
3. TotalcourserequirementsaresubjecttoapprovalofthePhDadvisor,whocanrequirecourses
beyondtheminimumrequirementslisted.
