Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Introduction
Scope of ISO/TS 17165-2:
Provides guidelines for selection, routing,
fabrication, installation, replacement,
maintenance and storage
Applies to hydraulic hose and hose
assemblies manufactured from hoses and
hose fittings conforming to ISO standards.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Safety considerations
List in ISO/TS 17165-2 is not all-inclusive.
Reasonable and feasible means of risk
reduction required.
Training is encouraged.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Safety considerations
Fluid injections
Can penetrate skin and enter a human body.
Can cause severe tissue damage and loss of limb.
Require immediate medical treatment by a doctor.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Safety considerations
Whipping hoses
Hose fittings can blow off, causing loose hose to flail
or whip.
Systems that use compressible fluids pose greater
risk.
Consider guards and restraints.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Safety considerations
Burns from conveyed fluids
Fluid can reach temperatures that can burn human
skin.
Consider guards and shields to prevent injury.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Safety considerations
Fire and explosions from conveyed fluids
Hydraulic fluids that escape from pressurized
system can form mist or fine spray that can explode
upon contact with ignition source.
Minimize risk by selecting, guarding, and routing
hose appropriately.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Safety considerations
Fire and explosions from static-electric
discharge from fluids
Fluid passing through hose can generate static
electricity.
Can create sparks that can ignite system fluid or
gases around system.
If necessary, use hose
specifically designed
to carry the static-electric
charge to ground.

Safety considerations
Electrical shock
Most hoses can conduct electricity.
Electrocution could occur.
Nonconductive hoses are available.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Safety considerations
Mechanisms controlled by fluid power
Mechanisms controlled by hydraulics can become
hazardous when hose fails.
Failure modes that minimize risks of injury or
damage shall be considered.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Hose selection and routing
System shall be analyzed.
Routings shall be designed and hose and
related components selected to meet
requirements, and to minimize risks of injury or
damage or both.
The following factors shall be considered:

Hose assembly fabrication
Hose assembly fabricators should be trained.
Manufacturers instructions and ISO/TS
17165-2 shall be followed.
Properly assembled hose fittings are vital to
hose assembly integrity.
Improperly assembled hose fittings can
separate from the hose and can cause serious
injury or property damage.

Age control
Age control system control shall be maintained to
ensure that hose is used before its shelf life has
expired.
Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer,
shelf life is as follows:
bulk rubber hose or hose made from two or more materials
is 28 quarters (7 years) from the date of manufacture
thermoplastic and PTFE hose is considered to be unlimited
hose assemblies that pass visual inspection and proof test
shall not be stored for longer than 2 years

Storage
Storage conditions
Hose and hose assemblies shall be stored in
accordance with ISO 8331.
Manufacturers information for storage and shelf life
shall also be followed.
Many factors can adversely affect hose and hose
assemblies in storage.

Hydraulic Technical Services LLC

Hydraulic Hose Assembly Application Guidelines ISO/TS 17165-2
Storage
If the quality or usability of hose or hose assemblies
is in question, the hose or hose assemblies shall be
evaluated.
Flex the hose to the minimum bend radius
Check for corrosion
If doubt still persists, conduct proof pressure tests or any
other necessary tests.
