Jim & Melissa Marcum Intercessory Missions Update August 2017

2017
Dear Friends & Family,
We are (thankfully) all moved in to our new home! We have accomplished four full-house moves in five
years, and we feel the Lords sense of humor that our most recent move is now into a mobile home. He is
surely teaching us how to be mobile! We are enjoying our new place very much; its our first time as just the
two of us since 1983 34 years ago. We feel like were entering a new season, and that God has special plans
for this season of our life. So, were listening and following the best we can! In this months newsletter we have
updates on the pro-life ministries were involved with, and Melissa will share about a new assignment she
accepted to be in leadership at Forerunner Bookstore (So proud of her: Jim). Thanks, everyone, for reading
and continuing to share with us in our journey here at International House of Prayer in Kansas City!

Prayer & Sidewalk Counseling - Making a Difference!
Its so encouraging to see the Lord continue to bless and build
our Kansas City Coalition for Life. On the last weekend of
June, we hosted a training for new sidewalk counselors which
turned out to be one of the best-attended ones yet. Two of the
new trainees have joined me (Jim) on the sidewalks on
Wednesday morning in front of the Center for Womens Health
at College & Roe in Overland Park. One of the ladies has been
involved in pro-life ministries before, but for the other one this
is her first time. Both of them are women of prayer, and very
burdened with the Lords heart for the unborn. We have other
new counselors that are joining us for some other days as well.
On Wednesday mornings, in addition to sidewalk counseling, we now have a special one-hour prayer meeting on the
sidewalk which many of our counselors and prayer-partners are attending. Recently, as we were praying at our
location, the Lord did something awesome around the corner at the Planned Parenthood where other counselors were
stationed. Our prayer leader, Wendy, sent us this email:
Our faithful Wednesday morning sidewalk counseling friends at the Planned Parenthood, Kevan &
Deanna, report that a woman turned from aborting her twins at the last minute, just at the same time our
prayer time at the Center for Woman's Health was going on, at 9:15 this morning. God, You are so good and
Your glory fills the earth! Thank you for your magnificent power, shown in the life of this young woman
today. We are humbled and say thank you for working as we were praying. The power of prayer is tangible
to us today. Thank you for your mercy and grace.
Kevan asks that we continue to pray for this mother. "Pray that she will not turn, but that she will let us
help her. She is in a desperate situation. Pray that she will turn to the Lord who is a very present help in time
of trouble. Abortion must be abolished."

Spiritual Warfare in the Kansas City Life Movement

During one of our prayer meetings at Advice & Aid pregnancy center a few months ago, their director shared some
good news with us. A local radio station had contacted her and had heard an interview she had done, and asked her if
she would like to air advertisements on one of their stations. It is an alternative station that would reach a younger
audience which would potentially have a lot of listeners who are more at risk for abortion. They ended up signing a
contract to do some ads on the station. What happened next is crazy, yet shows the warfare around this issue. Here is
what a local Kansas City paper, The Sentinel, reported:
Kansas City radio station 96.5, The Buzz, shut down an advertising campaign the station had contracted with
Advice & Aid Pregnancy Centers after pro-abortion extremists from Planned Parenthood Great Plains took issue
with the content of the ad.
An advertising sales representative had earlier contacted Advice and Aid about buying ads, says center
executive director Ruth Tisdale. She did her homework. She knew our website inside and out, Tisdale said. Her
boss came with her, and we were very open with them about what we do and how we do it and about what we
are and what were not. They were thrilled that we would advertise on the station. But, before the campaign
had even gotten off the ground, a local Planned Parenthood affiliate, part of the nations largest abortion
provider, objected. Its staffers took to social media asking the radio station to pull the ads. [Such as]: Advice and
Aid, an anti-choice extremist group that operates under the guise of a health center, is now advertising on 96.5
The Buzz, KCs alternative radio station. Lets help The Buzz understand why Advice & Aid is dangerous for their
listeners. Tell the radio station to reject these advertising dollars. The misinformation continued
@965TheBuzz: You should know Advice and Aid shames women out of abortion and is not a medical
practice, one Planned Parenthood Great Plains tweet reads.
To the contrary, Advice & Aids medical director is a board certified OB/Gyn. Its staff and volunteers include
nurses and trained sonographers. Their large medical advisory group is comprised of an array of medical
professionals.
Bonyen Lee-Gilmore, Planned Parenthood Great Plains Communications Director, was largely responsible for
raising the stink about Advice and Aids ad campaign. She was interviewed by Buzz on-air personality Lazlo, host
of The Church of Lazlo, for a podcast. The nine-minute segment was chock full of factual errors about Advice &
Aid and contained the typical inaccurate list of talking points perpetrated by Planned Parenthood whenever they
attempt to discredit the work of pregnancy resource centers. The only accurate fact Lee-Gilmore stated was that
the two businesses are next door to each other. Lazlo, the on-air personality ultimately responsible for deciding
to stop the ads, also did not respond to Tisdales gracious invitation to tour the Overland Park pregnancy resource
center location and learn more about Advice & Aid.
[The Advice & Aid] board believed that the stations listeners are the exact audience we are trying to reach
women who need to know that there are multiple options out there. Its unfortunate that our life-saving message
is being censored by a few who fear having another point of view expressed, Tisdale said.
Advice & Aids board has requested its money back. Managers from the station did not return phone calls
from the Sentinel.

A New Assignment!
A couple months ago I was approached by my boss at
the bookstore with an invitation. I was asked to consider
becoming the Retail Manager for our two stores. I was at
the same time both excited and trepidatious. While I felt I
was familiar enough with the store and its procedures
and would enjoy the challenge, I also felt a real sense of
responsibility that I could not take lightly. We at the
bookstore have come to realize that sometimes we are
the only people that first-time visitors get a chance to
talk to. We are the Face of IHOPKC to many who come
to see what we are about. We do take this seriously, and are working hard to be good representatives of the
gospel as well as a fun place to peacefully enjoy the presence of the Lord while searching for resources to
help grow in relationship to Jesus. After seeking the Lord for many days, He assured me this is what He has
st
for me in this season. So, I started my new role August 1 , and I love it! Your prayers are appreciated that I
would be a good example for my staff members, and be able to minister effectively. Thank you!
Final Word: Were very excited that this past Friday night was a special pro-life service at IHOPKC. Our Life
leaders, Denny & Mindy Tebo, shared their story of how God led them to begin The Moral Outcry movement
to petition the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. It was a holy time and an emotional time, as nearly the
entire room came forward at the end, asking the Lord to use them to help end the abortion holocaust. If you
havent yet, please sign the petition at www.themoraloutrcy.com, and share it with others! We want to thank
those whove given special gifts toward our Washington D.C. trip in October where well help unroll the petition
at the National Mall. Weve raised $645 toward the $1,000 goal! If you have not given and would like to help
us reach the goal, please send a gift to the address below or give online our online giving code is also listed
below. Thank you so much! Until next time, please keep in touch, and remember were praying for you!
