INTERVENTION CONCEPT

So, after going through all the analysis Dolphins made a great effort to draw from the data we've
been given and went in systematic way in order to find our intervention. All problems that were in
previous analysis evalueted as important ones have flown into our next step.
But what we've also found important is, not only focusing on negative sides and needs but also
enhancing social dimension of their culture, which was one of our tree categories that are used as
main pillars of Ezbet project also.
So going back to the beginning, reading the interviews we could read this:
Local people are willing to participate, Locals are donating land for building school Using things
creatively for another purposes Community/neighbours act as one family
So trying to tackle problems that we can, at the same time we wanted to point out their sense of
creativity, belonging and carring and bring it to the surface. These potentials by the locals were some
sort of light trail on our way of creating a concept for our intervention.

Happiness held is the seed

After we've discussed things we can't do, whether due to overwhelming buget or the time that
certain projects demand, we started thinking from a scratch: maybe it's not always trying to fix
something broken, what if we start over and (try) creating something better? Something that could
potentialy develop into something bigger?

To describe it closely, we like to think of our intervention as a seed. So, something that we are going
to plant is something very simple, very small, close to the people and their culture. Our job would be
just watering the seed leaving it to grow and develop on its own. Supporting the seed, we gave only
few directions that should be respected, in order for both the intervention to achieve succes and
island to save its characteristics.
1. Our target group is female population, so it should be a place for women and their children

2. The plan for intervantion is to be multiphased; after (if) the phase one go well, by the end crew
should start on preparing the next phase-also planting another seed and see in which direction it will
lead.

3. The new created space must be coupled with opportunities for use and, ofcourse, integration into
the fabric of the island- it should be flexible, not a barrier in space or something that local people
there are not used to.

4. In creating the new opportunities we also plan to use local resources that are now considered as
waste that no one use but they have potential for something useful (straw, construction waste-
bricks)

5. Thinking of where to place our intervention, we decided it should be place that is frequently
visited and easy to reach for all locals. That led us to the conclusion we are going to place the
intervention on 4 different spots.

6. And finally, since it is multiphased intervention we'd like to think of that space as multifunctional.
The idea is that this seed through time become a tree, developing on itself relying just to nature
(which would be community) laws.

Starting on phase one. Throughout the interviews, locals have multiple times repeated that it's very
hard to find bread or baking places on the island(there are only two). So we came up on the idea of
building an oven. An oven as a symbol of simplicity but yet also a source of bread that symbolizes
life. Why an oven? Does it solve anything? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. As we stated before, this
project consists of multiple phases and has it's long-term goals but here, at the very beginning, we
are starting from the bottom: creating a space that locals can connect to at very basic level. Oven is a
basic need, very simple and close to their culture and since our target group are women- it will be
really beneficial for them.
In our getting to know the island parts of workshop we've found out that women offten go to a
public water tap for cleaning dishes and wardrobe, but also they go there to socialize with other
women. So, we thought, adding another feature that also represents a basic need, could be usefull
and enhance the social dimension of that place.
By creating space like this we would provide social and life-important place for women, but also sort
of an educational space- for younger girls that would accompany their mothers learning how to bake
bread and for others that would be thought by the experts on how to build an oven so later they can
do it on their own. That means providing another jobs fot people within the island.
That satisfy the social benefit as well as economic benefit (because later they can sell the bread) and
also it supports the profession.

The secret to succes is to start from scratch and keep on scratching.

Moving on second phase. If the phase one goes well, and people accept it and show their interest on
upgrading the space, our suggestion would be adding a market space for local women to sell their
products there, since lot of people have said when interviewed that they go outside the island to sell
vegetables. So it would also start as very small intervention in existing water tap and baking node
place, and it will develope based on response of the community. This would also include a small
playground for children since they always accompany their mothers who are visiting this place.

From a small seed a mighty trunk may grow.

Finishing up with phase tree. Since education problem is one of the greatest, at finishing stage we
would like to take at least baby steps to improve it in a way we can. At the beginnign it doesn't have
to be school education. We think about providing people, mostly children with basic knowledge
about farming or other things people at the island are good at. It would be a small gathering space
where people share knowledge and expiriences among young population, as well as medical unit for
first aid to teach them how to react in urgent cases since they have to relay on themselves when the
doctor is not on the island.

In order to implement all these, our team came up with a list of Next steps that should be clarify,
so our research group should on further steps define the following:
- exact number of men, women and children
- who has vacant land that can be rented
- number of children not going to school (for educational centar)
- who is willing to educate children and others (who is qualified to teach Agricultural awarness,
baking techniques, building oven techniques..)
- do children use the playgroung of GUC or not? (for creating new small playgrounds)
-who are the community leaders

INTEGRATION OF NEW IDEAS

The tiny seed know that in order to grow, it need to be dropped in dirt, covered in darkness, struggle
to reach the light.

INVOLVEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY

Community involvement is a very important aspect of any project of this sort, no matter what size.
Community members, if given an opportunity to be informed and involved in the whole process,
would be a critical and crutial factor to the project's success.
Back to the very beginning, our concept is generated by the possibilities we saw here and our goal is
to achieve success for the people, by the people, with the people.
It's mentioned multiple times in interviews, that locals have given up on people who want to invest
something in the island, because nothing ever changes. Researches come, ask lot of questions, then
they go and everything remains the same.
Building an oven, ofcourse, is not the most urgent issue but it is a way to implement something
quickly, make succes and gain the trust of people. That's why we're starting from scratch here. We
want locals to be familiar with the project, to feel it as their own project and at the end as their own
succes. So, first goal of all, would be building trust among community.
There will always be different levels of involvement depending on roles in community and willingnes
to commit time and energy. So we would start with first approaching community leaders, after we
got the accurate informations on who they are, to inform them and ask them for their opinion and
help. Their involvement can contribute to the success of the project since they have great influence
and impact on others, as it is shown in interviews through the discussions.
Second step would be organizing on-site meeting with locals, finding out what community needs,
what will benefit them, what has been tried in the past and what could be done to improve past
actions, discussing our ideas, helping empower them to tackle the problems they confront and
informing them about the project before it is implemented. The informations need to be provided
also throughout the duration of the project and after it's done-in case they need help of experteese.
Because successful community involvement is based upon informations and dialogue, so only
informed community can be par ot the decision-making process.
To make progress, ofcourse, a high level of patience and willingness to listen with an open mind
would be important to all participants in the process in order for project to gain succes. For locals
who won't be interested in project-we should also keep them in mind and communicate with them
to reduce the risk of making our way to the goal difficult.

People will join if the change can and will occure.

Ofcourse, community won't be involved just at the beginning when informing about the project- they
are our key-stakeholders through the implementation of project also. Succes and failure depend on
them so it's very important that participants expirience a sense of achievement.
First step would be uniting people to work toward a common goal, bringing experts, or finding them
among the island population, that will show others how to properly build. That would include male
island population, mainly. After building an owen, it's up to female population to take care of it and
feel responsible for it, as well as teaching bread-baking techniques among youth.
Throught both phases, especially the third one,we are including also children giving creating places
for them to play as their mothers work or socialize.
Alternately, community acts as a teacher as well as a learner- thats all what's this about.

Long-term benefits of the project can include creation of more jobs, improvement and ehnahcement
of community realtions, community empowerment and overall enhancment of the quality of life on
the island. We plan on supporting families, strenghtening the relationships, improving education,
supporting youth and beautifying the community.
