CLL 331: Tutorial Sheet 3

Dilute Suspensions
Q1. Plot the disturbance field created by a unit point force in a fluid of unit viscosity using matlab.

Q2. An inclined fiber at an angle is held stagnant in uniform flow of velocity, U. Calculate the drag force
acting on the particle in the direction of the flow and perpendicular to the direction of the flow. Neglect
gravity and assume Stokes flow. (\kappa=l/d>>1)

Q3. For Newtonian fluid why is the viscosity not dependent on the flow field? Under what general
conditions can the viscosity depend on the flow field or strain rate?

Q4. Particles of different sizes (from 0.01mm to 0.2mm in dia ) of same material (sp. gravity 2) are to be
separated. How will you separate them into two fraction one upto 0.1mm and another fraction from .1-
.2 mm? Particles of same sizes (0.01mm and .2mm in dia) of two different materials (sp gravity 2 and
1.5) are to be separated by flow. How will you separate them? Can you separate them completely?

Q5. Calculate the terminal settling velocity of a quartz (sp. Gravity =1.20) sphere 0.1 cm in diameter, in
air (viscosity =10^(-5) Pa s). Determine the diameter of a sphere with sp gravity 4.0 having the same
terminal settling velocity.

Q6. Calculate the time taken to reach terminal velocity in the first part of the above problem. Assuming
Cd=0.44.

Q7. A sphere of density 1500 kg/m3 falls freely under gravity in a fluid of density 700 kg/m3 and viscosity
0.5*10-3 Pas. Given that the terminal velocity of the sphere is 0.15m/s, calculate its diameter. What
would be the edge length of a cube of the same material falling in the same fluid at the same velocity?
