Course Description:
The Coordinate Algebra Support course is designed to provide students with the support needed to address
common misunderstandings found in concepts introduced in Coordinate Algebra and to provide practice/review of
concepts that are foundational to the course. The support course will utilize the standards from Foundations of
Algebra as we will enhance basic skills needed to prepare for the Coordinate Algebra in the spring.

Coordinate Algebra and Support are paired courses. The paired courses are separate courses for record keeping.
The contents of the primary course and the paired course are aligned so that the two may be taught in an
integrated fashion. There is no separate textbook for the paired course. We will utilize various resources to support
student learning. Upon successful completion of math support, students will receive a 0.5 unit of credit.

Course Outline:
Unit 1: Relationships Between Quantities (2-3 weeks)
Building on standards from middle school, students will use quantities to model and analyze situations, use
quantities to interpret expressions, and use quantities to create equations and inequalities to describe situations

Students will conceptualize positive and negative numbers

Students will recognize rational numbers
Students will apply and extend operations of rational numbers
Students will interpret and use the properties of exponents

Unit 2: Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities (4-6 weeks)

Building on standards from middle school, students will analyze and explain the process of solving linear
equations and inequalities in one variable, analyze and explain the process of solving a system of linear
equations in two variables, solve a system of linear equations in two variables, and graph the solution set to a
linear inequality in two variables.

Students will generate and interpret equivalent numeric and algebraic expressions
Students will create and solve equations and inequalities in one variable
Students will use unites as a way to understand problems and solutions of multi-step problems.
Students will solve literal equations
Students use relations to solve real-world and mathematical problems
Students will graph proportional relationships

UNIT 3: Quantitative Reasoning with Functions (3-4 weeks)

Students will understand characteristics of functions

Students will compare and graph functions
Students will construct and interpret functions.
Students will use function notation
UNIT 4: Solving Systems of Equations (3-4 weeks)

Students will solve a system of equations in 2 variables

Students will identify the solutions to a system of equations using the graphing calculator
Students will solve problems using systems of equations

Grading Scale: Grading Protocol:

Assessment during Learning 25% 90-100 A
Guided, Independent or Group Practice 45% 80-89 B
Summative Assessment 30% 71-79 C
------------------------------------------------------------------------- 70 D
Total 100% Below 70 F

Required Materials:
3-Ring Binder
5 Dividers
Pencils

Classroom Expectations:
Arrive to class on time and prepared. You will not be allowed to go to your locker to get materials you need
for class after the bell rings.
By the time the bell rings, be in your seat with your notebook and homework turned in.
You are to be on task at all times.
Respect your teacher, your classmates, and your classroom.
Be responsible for your learning and participate. Ask questions as soon as you do not understand the
material. Help a neighbor or a friend when you are able to if they have questions.
Remain in your seats until the bell rings. I dismiss you, not the bell.

**In addition to these expectations all school policies will be enforced**

Absences:
If you are absent, I expect you to check the homework board and talk to me about any missing assignments.
Contact a classmate to get the notes you missed. Come see me during a tutorial time or make an appointment with
me to review the material you missed. If you are absent on the day of a graded assignment or assessment, your
make-up day will be the day you return to school. If you are absent for an extended period of time, please email or
see me when you return to school so we can schedule a day and time for you to make up the assignment or
assessment.

Cell Phones:
Cell phones are NOT to be used at any time during my class. They are to be turned in at the beginning of each
class period in the cell phone holder in the back of the room. On the first offense, I will simply give a warning and
put it back, on the second offense I will keep it until the end of the day, and on the 3rd offense I will keep it until the
end of the day and call home. Any refusal to put cell phones in the appropriate place will result in an afterschool
detention or ISS.

Homework:
We will have homework every day. It is your responsibility to come and get help if you missed it from the day
before. I will collect 1-2 homework assignments every Friday. The 1-2 assignments that I choose to collect will be
random. If you do not turn an assignment(s) in on time, you can turn it in later, but the maximum grade you can get
is a 70.

Make-Up Exams:
You have the opportunity to make up any failed exam/test. To make up an exam/test you must come in during
tutorial and you can make test corrections to earn back half of the points you missed. You can only make test
corrections if you have previously come in for tutorial. This means you must have already tried to get help
BEFORE you took the test the first time.

Hall Passes:
Each student will receive 4 hall passes at the beginning of the semester. Any hall passes leftover at the end of the
semester may be turned in on the last day of class for 5 points per pass to be counted towards a quiz grade.

**The teacher reserves the right to alter this syllabus at any time in order to maximize student achievement and
success. Students will be notified if the syllabus is revised, and an updated copy will be provided on the website**
