Hip hop is a subcultural movement that was formed during

the early 1970s by African-American, Caribbean, and


Latino youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City .

It became popular outside of the African-


American community in the late 1980s and by the 2000s
became the genre most frequently on a spotify playlist.

It is characterized by four distinct elements, all of which


represent the different manifestations of the culture: rap
music (oral), turntablism or DJing (aural), b-boying
(physical) and graffiti art (visual).

Rapping (or emceeing, MCing, spitting bars, or rhyming) is
"spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics". The components of
rapping include "content", "flow" (rhythm andrhyme ), and
"delivery.

Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating
music using turntables and a DJ mixer. Turntablists generally
prefer direct-drive turntables over belt-driven or other
types.

B-boying or breaking, also called breakdancing, is a style
of street dance that originated primarily among African
American and Puerto Rican youth, many former members
of the Black Spades, the Young Spades, and the Baby
Spades, during the mid 1970s
Graffiti (plural of graffito: "a graffito", but "these graffiti") are
writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or
painted illicitly on a wall or other surface, often within
public view.
