1. Use lead.xls to answer the following questions
2. All answers should be precise up to second decimal points, and to the third decimal points for p-
values.

Data description is described in lead.doc.

1. Compute and report the basic statistics for blood lead level group (LEAD_GRP) and age in years
(AGEYRS),
Blood lead level
group Age in years (AGEYRS)
(LEAD_GRP) n %
Mean= 10.07
1 64 64.65
SD=3.02
2 19 19.19
3 16 16.16 Median= 9.67

total 99 100.00 95% confidence interval

=( 9.47 , 10.67 )

Describe the results using sample presentation examples in handout:

There are totally 99 participants in the study. Distribution of their blood lead level group is as
shown in the table. Most of the participants have blood lead level below 40 micrograms/100Ml in
both 1972 & 1973 (group 1) (n= 64, 64.65%), and followed by participants with blood lead level
greater than or equal to 40 micrograms/100Ml in both 1972 & 1973 or a level greater than or equal
to 40 micrograms/100Ml in 1973 (group 2) (n= 19, 19.19%).

The mean (SD) age for 99 participants is 10.07 (3.02) years old with a median of 9.67 (95% CI =
9.47 , 10.67)

2. Compare the means of finger wrist tapping test in the dominant hand (MAXFWT) in different full
scale IQ categories.
Significant pairs from
Tukeys pairwise
Group n Mean Sd ANOVA comparison
Full scale IQ (IQF) category
INF<=85 31 51.81 11.58 F= 0.37 Do not need post-hoc
comparison testing
Df= 2 , 96
85<INF<= 29 50.48 11.22 because p-value of
95 p-value= ANOVA is not
0.695 significant
95<INF 39 53.18 14.95

Describe the results using sample presentation examples in handout:

Ninety-nine participants with finger wrist tapping test in the dominant hand were assigned to one
of three different full scale IQ (IQF) categories: IQF85 (n= 31), 85<IQF95 (n= 29), and IQF>95
(n= 39). Analysis with one-way ANOVA indicated that the difference of means of finger wrist

1
tapping test in the dominant hand in different full scale IQ categories was not statistically
significant (F2,96= 0.37; p= 0.695).

3. Compare the means of finger wrist tapping test in the dominant hand (MAXFWT) in different sex
(SEX).

Group n Mean Sd
Sex
1 59 51.20 14.75 t= -0.71
Df= 97
2 40 53.08 9.40
p-value= 0.479
Describe the results using sample presentation examples in handout:
A comparison of finger wrist tapping test in the dominant hand of male (n= 59) and female (n= 40)
revealed that male had a lower mean (SD) value 51.20 (14.75) than female 53.08 (9.40). The
difference between the means of the groups was statistically significant (p= 0.479).

4. Investigate the association between sex and full scale IQ categories.

IQF<=85 85<IQF<=95 95<IQF
Sex Total # n % n % n %
1 59 19 32.20 12 20.34 28 47.46
2 40 12 30.00% 17 42.50 11 27.50
total 99 31 31.31 29 29.29 39 39.39

2 test = 6.44 , df= 2 , p-value= 0.040

(do not need chi-square testing for trend for this question)

Describe the results using sample presentation examples in handout:

From the sample of 99 participants, there were 47.46% with IQF>95 in male, which was higher
than that of female (27.50%). The chi-square test revealed that sex and full scale IQ were not
statistically significantly associated (X2= 6.44, p= 0.040 ).
