Area Word Problems

Materials: Set of Area Word Problems (Fractional side lengths)

1. Choose an area word problem with fractional side lengths.

2. Use a grid to represent the product as a rectangular area


and show that the area is the same as would be found by
multiplying the side lengths.

Example: A rectangle is 4 meters long and half a meter wide. What is the area?

I shaded of four boxes in the grid. Next,


1/2 I added four times for a sum of 2. The
area of the rectangle is 2m.
