GOAL
The purpose of the experiments described here is to acquaint the student with:
Be able to use the commercial Finite Element package ANSYS to build Finite Element
models and solve a selected range of engineering problems.
Be able to validate a Finite Element model using a range of techniques.
Be able to communicate effectively in writing to report (both textually and graphically)
the method used, the implementation and the numerical results obtained.
Be able to discuss the accuracy of the Finite Element solutions.
Capabilities that you will learn, develop and exercise in this course are:
Problem-solving and decision-making capacity such as:
Ability to solve practical problems using mathematical software such as MATLAB;
Ability to solve engineering problems using the commercial software ANSYS.
Lecture Summary

Lab No.:- 1

Date:- 27/07/2017

Time:- 9.00-12.00 am

Broad Topic:- Basic introduction of FE Package ANSYS for the solution of solid mechanics
problems, heat transfer problems, and free vibration problems.

Lecture Description:-

The aim of the lecture was to introduce the students with the FEM packages, their GUI,
applicability, advantages and limitations. The basic steps to perform a general analysis in
ANSYS were demonstrated on projector screen. The preprocessing, geometrical modeling,
material modeling, real constants, meshing , element type, solution phase, and post-processing
steps were described one by one.

Lab No.:- 2

Date:- 03/08/2017(B1)

Time:- 9.00-12.00 am

Broad Topic:- Calculation of the nodal deflections, reaction forces, and stress for the truss
system using ANSYS.

Lecture Description:-

The objective was to describe the FEM modeling of truss structure to students using ANSYS.
One problem of truss under point loads was first theoretically explained and thereafter the step-
wise procedure using computer in ANSYS was detailed on the screen. The students were
encouraged to perform the similar exercise on individual system and to obtain the same solution.
The second problem of truss was given to students for evaluation purpose and at last their model
was checked.
Lecture Summary

Lab No.:- 3

Date:- 09/08/2017(B1)

Time:- 9.00-12.00 am

Broad Topic:- Modal analysis of cantilever beam using ANSYS.

Lecture Description:-

The objective was to describe the FEM modeling of beam structure to students using ANSYS. At
first the basic need of performing modal analysis was addressed to students. After preliminary
discussion the basic steps involved in modal analysis were described by taking an example of
modal analysis of beam. Then the modeling was illustrated in ANSYS. The results obtained
through ANSYS were discussed and students verified the results using their elementary
knowledge of vibrations. One other problem of modal analysis of beam was given to students
for evaluation purpose and at last their model was checked.
