Attitudes to grammar
There are many arguments for putting grammar in the foreground in second language teaching.
Here are some of them:
In the last century the architects of language teaching methods have been preoccupied
with two basic design decisions concerning grammar: if the method of teaching should
adhere to a grammar syllabus and if the rules of grammar should be made explicit;
After explaining some methods, the author presents some answers to the questions
above:
o To the first of the questions, most approaches to language teaching up to the
1970s have answered firmly Yes;
o On the question of the explicitness of rule teaching, there is a clear divide
between some methods. () The former methods reject grammar instruction,
while the latter accept a role for conscious rule-learning.
Grammar now
After looking at the arguments for and against incorporating grammar into language teaching,
the chapter explored how the role of grammar can be realised in the classroom, drawing up
some basic rules of thumb for grammar teaching. Those rules such as the efficiency and the
appropriacy will serve as criteria for evaluating the practical approaches that will follow
further in the book.
