REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION CARRIED OUT FOR THE
PROPOSED RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AT KAKKANAD

1.0 SCOPE

The scope of the project envisages sub-surface investigation to be carried

out for the purpose of the design of foundation for the proposed
residential building at Kakkanad. The scope of the work also involves
executing three bore holes with related field tests, collecting soil samples and
conducting related test and submission of technical report .

2.0 CODES AND STANDARDS

All works were carried out as per given specifications. Where not specified, the
latest relevant IS Codes were followed.

3.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of the proposed geo-technical investigation was to obtain the

following:

[a] To perform the required field investigation including soil boring with related
Field tests within the bore hole, collecting samples.

[1] To determine the type, extent of the sub-surface materials up to

5M (avg)

[2] To provide the engineering parameters required and to recommend

Suitable types of foundation for the proposed loading.
4.0 FIELD WORKS/TESTS

The field work in consists of-

[a] Executing three bore holes.

[b] Obtaining disturbed and undisturbed soil samples.

[c] Conducting Standard Dynamic Penetration tests as per the

Procedure prescribed in IS 2131.

5.0 PROGRAM OF INVESTIGATION

Keeping in view of the type of structure and loading pattern, three bore holes was
proposed.

6.0 PROCEDURE

The bore hole was executed using rotary method. Circulation of bentonite slurry was
used for advancing the bore holes and stabilizing the sides. Casing pipes were
introduced to protect the first meters. Representative samples were collected and
preserved in polythene bags.

Standard Penetration tests were conducted at regular intervals and also at points where
change of strata was observed.

INTRODUCTION

M/s NeoTech Foundations, Navullil(H), Amballur P.O, Ernalulam-682315 had conducted the
site investigation for the proposed Residence at Kakkanad for Mr Viviek. Three bore holes
were taken using rotary drilling upto a maximum depth of 20m for bore hole 1 and 10 m each
for borehole 2&3 respectively. Standard Penetration Tests were conducted at regular vertical
intervals and the samples, taken during the investigation.

DATA AND DISCUSSIONS

The soil profile in BH-1 location shows that the top layer is of gravel upto 1.0m depth. Below
that there is hard laterite upto 3m depth having N value of >50. After that, it is lateritic clay
with pebbles upto 12m depth having N value of 32 and >50. This is followed by moderately
strong medium silty lateritic clay upto the bored depth 20m. Ground water table is at 7.7m
below the ground level.

The soil profile in BH-2 location shows that the top layer is of gravel upto 1.0m depth. Below
that there is hard laterite upto 3m depth having N value of 47. After that, it is lateritic clay with
pebbles upto 10m depth having N value of 25 and 32. This bore hole was terminated at 10m.

The soil profile in BH-3 location shows that the top layer is of gravel upto 1.0m depth. Below
that there is hard laterite upto 3m depth having N value <50. After that, it is lateritic clay with
pebbles upto 10m depth having N value of 29 and 50. This bore hole was terminated at 10m.

Top laterite layer has good shear strength. So shallow foundation can be provided. Medium
hard rock is available at shallow depth. So foundation can be rested on hard rock also.

RECOMMENDATIONS

i) It is recommended to provide isolated footing resting at a depth of around 2.5m on

laterite layer having N value around 50 to support vertical column loads. A safe
bearing capacity of 250 kN/m2 can be assumed for a foundation size of 1.3m x
1.3m.
ii) Alternately, it is recommended to provide grid foundation resting at a depth of
around 2.0m on laterite layer having N value around 50 to support vertical column
loads. A safe bearing capacity of 180 kN/m2 can be assumed for the improved
ground for a foundation width of 0.7m. For design, Modulus of sub grade reaction
can be assumed as 35000 kN/m3.

iii) Factor of safety of 3 for end bearing and 2.5 for side friction are taken for the design.
Side friction for top 2.0m of soil is discarded.

iv) The sub structure has to be constructed as per latest IS code and it should be certified
by a qualified engineer.

v) These recommendations are based on the bore hole data obtained. If there is any
variation in the soil profile is observed during the boring operation, it should be
referred to a Geotechnical Engineer.
