Each of the projects described in this chapter are designed to be solved over the
course of a semester by an engineering team. The projects are listed with a recommended
number of team members.
Students who desire to work on these projects are referred to Chapter 1 for a
review of the design process, the nature of engineering design, design phases, codes and
standards, economics, product safety, the bid process, and especially project
management, project planning, internal documentation, and report preparation. The
student is encouraged to go through each of these topics and apply them appropriately in
the solution process.
Consideration should also be given to other parameters not discussed in Chapter
1, because they are important. These include: production processes, economic factors,
safety, reliability, aesthetics, ethical issues, and social impact.
It is also important to consider the total life cycle of the design. Specifically, how
will the design operate after 1 or 5 or 20 years? How will it be maintained? How will it
be used? How will it be marketed, and how will customer satisfaction be determined?
These things should be given attention as part of the solution
