ENGLISH I HONORS SYLLABUS

Course Description:
This honors course is designed to challenge students. It concentrates on developing reading, writing, and
critical thinking skills through an intensive survey of literary types and appropriate oral and written
responses. The course provides a review of grammar, mechanics, vocabulary, and usage as needed. This
college preparatory course focuses on the development of complex thought processes, independence in
learning, and creative expression through discussion and frequent writing assignments. Homework is a
reinforcement and extension of classroom instruction.

Required Readings:
A Raisin in the Sun, House on Mango Street, Romeo and Juliet, Animal Farm/Fahrenheit 451
(We provide students with copies of all texts; however, students may choose to purchase a copy of A
Raisin in the Sun, House on Mango Street, and/or Animal Farm/Fahrenheit 451 in order to closely read
and annotate directly in the texts, which allows for a deeper reading experience.)

Grading Period Weights and NCFE:


The semester will be divided into two grading periods, each worth 40% of students final grades.
Students will also be required to take the English I North Carolina Final Exam. This is a state exam that
will be given at the end of the semester and will make up the final 20% of their semester grade.

Other Required Work:


All English I students will be required to complete at least two unit projects. Students will also learn
grammar and vocabulary throughout the semester. Vocabulary words will be provided to students via
quizlet, and grammar exercises will be done through noredink.com. Students will be asked to complete
vocabulary and grammar homework assignments, and they will be quizzed regularly on the concepts and
terms learned.
