ThecurrentRichmondCommunityGardengroupcametogethertore-establishthe
pre-earthquakevegetablegardenalongtheeastsideofAveburyHouseinFebruary2015.In
justoneyearthegardenhadbeenfullyestablishedbyacoregroupoflocalvolunteers
withouttheassistanceofexternalfundingandinthisshortspaceoftimewehavealready
reconnectedthelocalcommunityinasocialandeducationalwayprovidingfoodresilience
andraisingtheprofileoftheAveburyParksite.
Membersofthegardengrouphavealsobeeninvolvedwiththesubmissiontoretainthe
paddlingpoolandthishashighlightedtousthevalueofcollaboratingbetweenorganisations
thatsharethesamecommongoalsandbeliefsthatwedo.Thisallowsustoachieveourgoals
whilstalsohelpingothers.
Weseethewholeareapark,gardenandriversideasanopportunityto,overtime,extend
onwhatwehavealreadyachieved.
RichmondisoneoftheoldestsuburbsofChristchurch,itismulticulturalandhasamixof
elderlypeople,professionals,youngfamilies,kindergartens,schoolsandthosewhoare
vulnerable.Weareindeedagrowingcommunity.
From1May2017GardenGroupwereissuedwitha2yearleasefromLINZfor1acreofRed
ZonelandinfrontofthepaddlingpooltocreateatransitionalcommunitySpace,Garden,fruit
forestandediblenativegarden.WearedirectlyacrossfromtheAvonOtakarocycleway
makingusalogicalGatewayandpointofinterest.
ThisinitiativeisinlinewiththeCCChealthyFoodActionplan,itissupportedbyCCCHeritage
Parks,Regenerate,AveburyHouse,AvonOtakaroNetwork,AvonOtakaroForestPark,
RekindleandFoodintheRedZone.WearemembersoftheChristchurchCommunity
GardensAssociationandTheFoodResilienceNetwork.
