ART
Life, Landscapes & Lairds
If all life is art, then therell be lots of it on show at the NESSCON Comic Con event at
EDEN COURT on 08 & 09 JUL where were expecting plenty of folk dressing up as their
favourite characters as they partake in the weekends celebration of comics, anime,
gadgets, games and more. They might even take time to check out some of the more
conventional art at the venue in the form of DIERDRE MCCRIMMONs PRESENCE and LEE
BISSETTs SCOTCH MIST. The former is a series of large scale ink drawings addressing
the concept of meditative stillness, while the latter is an impressive interpretation of
Highland landscapes from the mountains to the coast.
Over at GRANTOWN MUSEUM, theres an exhibition featuring the work of 18th century
artist Richard Waitt opening on 21 JUL and running until 31 OCT, entitled I, RICHARD
WAITT, PICTURE DRAWER: PORTAITS OF A HIGHLAND CLAN (1713 -1733) [1]. Waitt
was employed in 1713 by the Chief of Clan Grant to paint his family and retinue and over
twenty years he came up with what is recognised as the biggest ever single commission
of family portraits in 18th century Europe. The portraits include not only the Laird and his
family, but also servants, bards and ministers, providing a unique snapshot of life 300
years ago. The portraits have been hanging in Scotlands most prestigious galleries and
properties, but are now being brought home to Grantown for the first time. Worth a trip to
see such a culturally and artistically significent collection.

Long Live Cinema
Well, its now officially summer, and you know what that means: schools out, the sun is
shining, and the film pundits are bemoaning the death of cinema. It now appears to be
a yearly tradition for the film press to spend the summer months bemoaning the glut of
blockbusters and calling time of death on cinema as an artform. To us, however, this reflects
a certain laziness, an unwillingness to go and seek all that film has to offerand those who
go seeking this summer will find themselves richly rewarded indeed
Of course, if it is blockbusters you want, there are plenty of those, too. Wherever you see
the word blockbuster these days, the word Marvel wont be too far behind, and indeed
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING [2] (05 JUL Vue; 28 JUL EC) looks set to be amongst the
months biggest hits. A solo outing for TOM HOLLANDs incarnation of the wall-crawler, who of
course debuted in last years Capt America 3, this looks like it may struggle to differentiate
itself from previous big-screen variations on the character, but an impressive supporting
castMICHAEL KEATON, TONY REVOLORI, DONALD GLOVER, The Nice Guys ANGOURIE
RICE and Better Call Sauls MICHAEL MANDOcoupled with Hollands established chemistry
with MARISA TOMEI and ROBERT DOWNEY JR should make it a worthwhile watch. Also likely
to score big is WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES [3] (11 JUL Vue), the third instalment
in the Planet of the Apes prequel series that somehow, against all odds, have turned out to
be among the most interesting blockbusters of recent years, and hopefully returning director
MATT REEVES filmwhich adds WOODY HARRELSON to the mixwill keep up that quality.
But we think the most exciting of Julys would-be tent-poles is DUNKIRK [1] (21 JUL Vue &
EC), CHRISTOPHER NOLANs account of the 1940 evacuation of Allied troops from the titular
beaches. Sure to be a staggeringly ambitious effortcould this be Nolans Schindlers List?
Well soon find out, but either way this is set to be one of the most fascinating offerings of
the summer. Whether youre there for Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Harry Styles
or Nolan himself, it is sure to be worthwhile.
If none of those take your fancy, then Eden Court offer the chance to catch up with the uplifting
delights of the justly acclaimed and record-breaking WONDER WOMAN [4] (30 JUN), the
slightly-better-than-the-last-one-ness of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: SALAZARS REVENGE
(14 JUL), and the alleged shambles that is TOM CRUISEs THE MUMMY (07 JUL)
It being the school holidays, there are naturally a few offerings for kids and families, and once
again, its Pixar who bring us the biggest family release of the season, with, uh, CARS 3 [5]
(14 JUL Vue). Yes, the Pixar Films We Dont Talk About get a third instalment, one which
seems to be going the dark sequel route to boot: a surprise step forward for the franchise
or another unwelcome black mark on Pixars record? Still, if it pays for more of the likes of
Inside Out, itll all be worth it. Dreamworks, meanwhile, offer us CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE
FIRST EPIC MOVIE [6] (28 JUL Vue), an adaptation of Dave Pilkeys long-running childrens
book series. Your likely enjoyment of it can be gauged by how you feel about seeing a film
called Captain Underpants in the first place. The most exciting family feature of the month
however, is THE RED TURTLE [7] (0104 JUL EC), the latest gem from the house of wonders
that is Studio Ghibli. Directed by MICHAEL DUDOK DE WIT, its the dialogue-free, gorgeously
animated tale of a ship-wrecked man who meets the eponymous testudine. Promises to be a
magical, one-of-a-kind experience.
However, the most potentially fascinating releases of the month come from the foreign and
art-house circuit. THE BEGUILED [8] (14 JUL Vue, 28 JUL EC) made SOFIA COPPOLA the first
woman to take Best Director at Cannes in over half a century, and the well-castNICOLE
KIDMAN, KIRSTEN DUNST, ELLE FANNING, COLIN FARRELLDeep South feminist period
drama looks set to be another rich, engrossing entry from the filmmaker. Theres a double-
11
bill of films set in the German capital, namely Somersault director CATE SHORTLANDs dark
psychological thriller BERLIN SYNDROME [9] (14 JUL EC) and WWII resistance study ALONE
IN BERLIN [10] (21 JUL EC). FRANCOIS OZON looks at the previous World War in the low-key,
intimate FRANTZ [11] (07 JUL EC), while fellow French national treasure ISABELLE HUPPERT is
a faded Eurovision star in SOUVENIR (21 JUL EC). The brilliant HIROZAKU KOREEDA offers us
another study of the nuances of everyday life with AFTER THE STORM [12] (30 JUL EC), while
anime IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD [13] (2830 JUL EC) delves into wartime Japanand
gives some long-overdue cinematic attention to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
So, thats new NOLAN, GHIBLI, COPPOLA, OZON, and KOREEDA within a month. From where
were sitting, cinema looks pretty darned alive
Other releases: If its a laugh you want, then try rom-com GIRLS TRIP (26 JUL Vue), with REGINA HALL,
QUEEN LATIFAH and JADA PINKETT SMITH, or catch ROGER ALLAM in THE HIPPOPOTAMUS (01 JUL EC)
centred on a lecherous disgraced-poet-turned-critic summoned to investigate a series of miracles, or slow-
burning Swedish dramedy A MAN CALLED OVE (21 JUL EC) which finally arrive in town, as does live action
version of anime classic GHOST IN THE SHELL (01 JUL EC) with SCARLETT JOHANSSON.
Brit-flick Trio: Brian Cox is CHURCHILL (30 JUN EC), DIANE KEATON and BRENDAN GLEESON star
in quaint tale HAMPSTEAD (0713 JUL EC), while PETER MULLAN leads a true story of, uhh, golf, in
TOMMYS HONOUR (0713 JUL EC).

David Walliams is establishing himself as this generations Roald Dahl and while
his comedic persona is trying at the best of times, theres no doubting his skill as
a writer. One of his many successes, BILLIONAIRE BOY [2], is coming to BRODIE

The Greats, Outdoors.
MUSIC
The start of summer having been officially announced in true Highlands manner with
days of torrential rain, were hoping that all the water in the sky has been used up
ahead of a plethora of outdoor events. Were still a month away from BELLADRUM,
which starts on 03 AUG and which youll be able to read all about in next months
issue, but if youre after the feel of grass beneath your feet while you take in your
musical fancies, there are plenty of opportunities.
First off, on 01 JUL its the latest edition of OUTDORES, the clubbing shindig on
the shores of Loch Ness at Dores Inn. This time round, Glasgows DENIS SULTA
[2] is headlining and also on the line up will be SPARKY (Live) DEBUKAS B2B ALLY
RIDGERS, MARK MACKENZIE, ALOTTARHYTHMMAN and SUBALPINE.
Hardened clubbers are spoilt for choice that day, as 01 JUL also sees dance legends
LEFTFIELD [1] at IRONWORKS, while just a week later, on 08 JUL, IRONWORKS is
again the place to be for hip-hop pioneers THE SUGARHILL GANG [9] wholl be bringing
the spirit of The Get Down to proceedings and demonstrating a style that might seem a
tad showbizzy these days, but which underpins everything thats followed.
Back outside its the latest series of gigs in BUGHT PARK, following on from UB40s
visit a couple of months back. This time you can catch BRYAN ADAMS [4] on 16 JUL
and OLLY MURS [5] on 22 JUL, both of whom will be inducing fizzy feelings in fans of
various ages. And therell be more hits than you can shake a stick at.
As is invariably the case, folk fans are well catered for, with a heads up now for the
always entertaining PHILNALY [6] at BOGBAIN FARM on 02 AUG, but prior to that
theres a trio of shows at EDEN COURT well worth your attention. First, on 05 JUL, its
fiddle/piano duo CHARLIE GREY & JOSEPH PEACH [8] whove been enjoying great
success including being album finalists in the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award.
For this show theyre joined by two special guests, Ryan Young on fiddle and Owen
Sinclair on guitar and vocals.
On 09 JUL its the turn of MARY DUFF [3], the Irish singer who, having just toured
with Dominic Kirwin, is playing Inverness as part of a worldwide jaunt that takes in
everywhere from America to New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Then, on 30 JUL its EDUARDO
NIEBLA [7], the virtuoso Spanish guitarist who makes music that transcends genres
and crosses barriers , brilliant flamenco jazz fused with Eastern influences. His last visit
to Eden Court was rather special, so dont miss out this time round.

FILM
Its that time of the year again when folk up here get an irresistable urge to demonstrate
their prowess at everything from hurling timber to dancing in perfect synchronisation,
when regional identity meets sporting spectacle and traditions from days gone by are
passed on to future generations. Yep, its Highland Games Season. And while the
gatherings are perhaps not as integral a part of local communities as in days gone by,
theyre still crowd pullers for locals and tourists alike.
There are plenty of Games going on this month (including in TAIN and FORRES on 08
JUL, then in TOMINTOUL on 15 JUL), but the daddy of them all is the INVERNESS
HIGHLAND GAMES [1] in BUGHT PARK on 15 JUL. Its part of the Inverness Gala these
days (which you can read more about on P29), but has a rich history stretching back
to 1822 and still attracts competitiors from all over to participate in a host of athletics
events and, of course, demonstrations of strength and dexterity such as tossing the
caber and lifting eye-bogglingly heavy stones. And when you see the heavies in action
it makes superhero movies look like a church picnic. Tickets cost 5 for adults and 3
for Seniors and Under 18s, with all Under 5s admitted free. You can buy them on the
Fri evening (6pm-8pm) from Inverness Town House or on the gate at Bught Park on the
day. Doors open at 10.30am.
One other big sporting event taking place is slightly out of the area, but worth a mention
is the SCOTTISH 6 DAYS ORIENTEERING at ROYAL DEESIDE from 30 JUL-04 AUG. A
biennnial event taking place in different areas of Scotland each time, thisll see over
3500 competitiors navigating their way around the spectacular terrain.

Big Guns
Plenty of theatrical spectaculars coming up, the biggest of them being right at the
end of the month, SISTER ACT [1] at EDEN COURT from 31 JUL04 AUG. Directed
and choreographed by Strictlys Craig Revel Horwood, its based on the movie starring
Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith and features X Factor winner ALEXANDRA BURKE
as the habit-clad whirlwind at the heart of an all singing, all dancing affair. From what
weve seen and heard, this should be rather wonderful.
As should another lauded adaptation, THE RAILWAY CHILDREN [2] at EDEN COURT
from 1116 JUL. For some of us the original book and ensuing movie is the standard
setter, but recent stage adaptations have shown just how enduringly wonderful the
tale of childhood and parental longing can be. This version by David Simpson promises
an uplifting theatrical experience for all ages, packed with intrigue, adventure, joy and
jubilation. Which sounds just fine, even without Jenny Agutter, Bernard Cribbins and
Lionel Jeffries.
A forthcoming fresh film version of Murder On The Orient Express should renew interest
in Agatha Christie, so its timely that her A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED [3] is coming to
EDEN COURT from 1722 JUL. This version, from Middle Ground Theatre Company has
the delightful one-time Doctor Who assistant, LOUISE JAMESON, playing Miss Marple,
which makes us feel very old indeed. Cara Chase is taking that role on 19 & 20 and
theres a strong supporting cast featuring many faces familiar from TV. And, of course,
its a heck of a good yarn.
Shakespeares King Lear is an even finer tale and Bard In The Botanics are giving it a
neat twistQUEEN LEAR [4]at CAWDOR CASTLE on 30 JUL. As the name suggests,
Jennifer Dicks adaptation looks at proceedings from the perspective not of a king, but
a great queen. Its performed outdoors, so bring a rug/seat/brolly.
Theres always good comedy up here these days and this month is no exception. While
PHILL JUPITUS [5] and RUSSELL KANE [6] arent necessarily our personal favourites,
its good to see them putting in the hard yards and coming to the Highlands. Kane
is at EDEN COURT on 26 Jul, while PJs Juplicity tour takes in Craigmonie Centre,
Strathpeffer Pavillion and Universal Hall, Findhorn. See listings for dates. A word too for
another rising comedy star, STUART MITCHELL [7], whose show at EDEN COURT on
13 JUL manages to bring humour to a desperately tragic back story.
Also recommended this month are a couple of classical musicals in the form of
PATIENCE at EDEN COURT on 22 JUL and THE PEARL FISHERS at STRATHPEFFER
PAVILION on 26 JUL. The former, from Skye & Lochalsh based Inner Sound is a Gilbert
& Sullivan operetta poking fun at the aesthetic movement of the late 19th century in
England, while the latter finds the always excellent Opera Bohemia taking on Bizets
masterpiece set in Ceylon.
