Executive Summary

As a part of my MBA curriculum I have done my summer internship training at Sewara


Hospitality and Development, New Delhi. In this report I am going to share my experience in the
company of the period from 3rd May 2010 to 28th June 2010. During my internship my role was
“Online Marketing Executive Trainee – Sales & Marketing”. I was supposed to research the
importance of Online Marketing in order to boost the sales. As a part of this internship I have
identified some problems and provided some strategy in order to do effective online marketing.

Company Overview
The Brand
Sewara’s primary objective is to create ecological and culturally anchored high-end getaways
while propagating the sustenance and perpetuation of the socio-cultural and ecological heritage
of India, past and living. The Sewara family has cultivated a sense of two-fold duty: unrelenting

the other. All aspects of our product and services reflect our philosophy and objectives whether it
is food and beverage, architecture & design or ground level operations.

In developing and propagating our ethos & values, we attempt to ingrain in our internal and
external patrons a sense of responsibility towards India’s indigenous traditions, ethnic mores and
natural environment. Through our direct and indirect contribution to the hospitality and travel
industry, all our employees and projects reinforce this attempt. We aim to propagate employee
welfare and betterment not only of Sewara employees but their families as well.

It is our relentless desire to meet the demands of new-age travelers for experiential destinations
that allow indulgence into the culture of the region. Sewara Getaways have been developed to
offer exactly that. This guest experience is made interactive through architecture and design,
cuisines and activities.

Sewara Hospitality & Development resides over nine properties at pristine, untouched locations

across India. Some of these have been operational for several years, some are due to open shortly
and some are still in the predevelopment phase. However, the binding synergy between them is
that they observe the same lifestyle parameters: deep anchoring with indigenous traditions and
harmony with the surrounding environs.

History

Founded in 1964, the company specializes in developing and manufacturing bulk drugs and
pharmaceutical formulations. Over forty-five years it has grown from a chemist shop into a
multi-national entity with sales revenues of over $40 million. Jagsonpal has substantial research
and development, manufacturing, marketing and distribution facilities. The firm has been so
successful only because there is a clear distinction between ownership and management. The
management of Jagsonpal is a meritocracy, though at heart it may be a family owned business.

Setting the standards and framework at Sewara from the top is Managing Director Inderpal Singh
Kochhar. Mr. Kochhar completed his A-levels from The British School,New Delhi (affiliated to
Cambridge University) and college education from Sarah Lawrence (Liberal Arts) College in
New York. Subsequently, he trained at ‘The Setai’ in Miami (a GHM property of world-
renowned hotelier Adrian Zecha). In 2005, Mr. Kochhar took over the reins of Sewara
Hospitality & Development, with the running of Lodi – The Garden Restaurant and subsequently
Pushkar Resorts.

‘By turning around systems - operational and infrastructural - he not only transformed both
properties into immensely profitable businesses within 2 years, but also added two more
properties, Lakshman Sagar and Silver Sand in the portfolio of the company. With this incredible

success to his credit, Mr. Kochhar is relentlessly working towards ensuring the success of the
group’s upcoming properties

Vision

Our vision is to present the conventional sense of Indian hospitality, not overtly clichéd but
interspersed with traditions and modern-day comforts. ‘Sewara’ is a synthesis of Sewa (service)
and Ara (of the world): our commitment of care towards our culture, heritage and environment
has a corresponding responsibility that we strive to fulfill.

• Our continuous Endeavour to search pristine, virgin locations and share the experience
with other individuals is realized by opening a restaurant, resort or hotel.

• We understand the location and it's capacity for development before sharing these
wonderful experiences with our guests. We recommend beautiful locations and properties
which are not under the Sewara brand but are quality experiential destinations
nonetheless.

• We don’t want to confine ourselves to any specific geographic area. Presently, operations
are confined to India but we are planning to expand our horizon to South Asia. We are
passionate about India and our constant endeavor is to understand the culture, heritage,

environment and past & present living styles. People are not only affected by diversity of
geography but it the implicit variations in culture, art and crafts, music, stories and most
of all people. From beaches, mountains & deserts to swamps, flatlands and forests: our
vision is to share all the faces of India.

Sewara Hospitality and Development has cultivated and encouraged the implementation of
positive values in all employees. This has ensured the growth of the organization as well as
personal growth in an overall positive direction. By consistently delivering a quality
experience to guests, we ensure value for their time and money. Sewara values also

Team

Inderpal Singh Kochhar - MD


He attended a liberal arts college – Sarah Lawrence College - in New York and concentrated on
films. Following this, he trained at The Setai in Miami, which is a GHM property of world-
renowned hotelier Adrian Zecha. He is an amateur film-maker and has held previews at galleries
in New York during his college days.
ANIL SHARMA – GENERAL MANAGER, MARKETING & SALES
Before joining Sewara, he was associated with Avalon Courtyard, New Delhi and Avalon
Resorts, Mussoorie. He has also worked with Old Anchor (Dalmia Resorts) in Goa as General
Manager of Marketing. Mr. Sharma brings on board vast experience of marketing and
networking on pan-India basis.
UPENDRA NATH SENAPATI – MANAGER FINANCE AND ACCOUNTS
The senior most member in the team, he brings 18 years of rich experience in finance and
accounts and has been associated with the hospitality industry since his graduation. He began his
career with RCI, a leading international time share company and subsequently moved to Avalon
Resorts Pvt. Ltd as a deputy manager of accounts.

ASHISH KANOJIA - MANAGER OPERATION- RAJASTHAN
After completing his graduation in Hotel Management from Indraprastha University, Delhi, he
started his career in F&B department at Grand Hyatt, New Delhi. Before joining Sewara, he was
Manager Operations with Savoy, Mussoorie and was instrumental in and renovation and
revamping of all the departments in the hotel.

Product and services


Lodi – The Garden Restaurant

Lodi – The Garden Restaurant offers the possibility of hosting a wide variety of private and
public gatherings. Our patrons vary from Delhi socialites and industrialists to ministers and
bureaucrats and are augmented by expatriates living in the city and international travelers.

The Lodi’s positioning in the cultural heartland of New Delhi allows it to function as a non-
institutional hub for cultural activities. Along with casual dining, we like to serve our customers
with a progressive outlook: the Lodi experience is about expanding your socio-cultural and
ecological perspective. The Lodi has worked with New Delhi’s top event companies, cultural
centers, NGOs and other associates to host a wide range of public events in the following
categories

Music: performances, recitals, workshops, album launches

Art: exhibitions, showcases, previews

Literary: book launches, poetry & prose readings, author showcases

Fashion: ramp shows, model/designer showcases, previews

Products: exhibitions, workshops, launches

Other: flea markets, yoga classes, movie screenings

The Lodi is also a preferred venue for private gatherings: from business lunches & corporate get-
togethers to cocktails, kitty parties and birthday/anniversary functions. As it is more than a mere
venue for such events, The Lodi has a set of rules and restrictions (legal and restaurant policy)
regarding infrastructure, sound levels, aesthetics etc. which are strictly adhered to by the
management.

Pushkar Resorts

Pushkar Resorts sprawls over 15 acres in the idyllic Ganehhra Village 8 kms outside Pushkar.
The natural ambience inside creates a seamless flow between outdoors and indoors, with lush
green landscaping, small water bodies and birdcall. Pushkar Resorts is indeed a modern-day
oasis in the midst of the hectic conventional heritage tourism circuit in Rajasthan.

The reception area is small and casual: it features a shop where guests can buy leather-ware,
swimming trunks, books, photographs and movies. The reception block also houses the
recreation room and sports equipment. Paintings by S.K Mani and M. Sivanesan are placed all
over.

There is an abundant fruit orchard which houses a variety of flora (mangoes, amla, guavas,
bananas) and fauna (peacocks, guinea fowl, tortoises, and turkeys). The central lawn area
surrounds the swimming pool & sun-deck. These are flanked by the volleyball court and croquet
pitch. The four clusters of cottages are located on three sides of the resort with the pool as the
centre-point.

Spa – The Kaivalya Spa features a Jacuzzi, steam rooms and a wide variety of massages
and treatments. Health snacks and drinks are also available from the special spa menu.
Yoga & meditation classes can be arranged on request.

Conference Hall – Pushkar Resorts features an air-conditioned conference hall which


can accommodate up to 200 people. All modern conferencing facilities - projectors,
audio-visual equipments, pre-conferencing area - are available. It is a convenient venuw
for business conventions & corporate meets as well as family get-togethers & private
banquets.

Travel Desk – We provide travel services to our guests. Taxis can be arranged for sight-
seeing or inter-city travel. There is also a pick-up & drop facility to and from Ajmer
station.

Swimming Pool – The swimming pool and sun-deck is at the heart of the resort. It is
open from 0730 hrs to 1900 hrs. For your safety and the safety of others, kindly follow
the pool area regulations.

Sports & Recreational Facilities - Sports that guests might indulge in at the resort are
badminton, sand volleyball, swimming, table tennis, croquet and putting & chipping.
Additionally, there are board games, a library with a diverse range of books and a
collection of classic movies available on request.

Open areas – The badminton court, sand volleyball court, golf area, croquet ground and
open lawns add to the re-invigorating atmosphere of Pushkar Resorts. These are ideal for
children to play or just hang around.

Vehicles on rent – We provide guests with bicycles, motorcycles and jeeps on rent.

Doctor on call (24 hours) - There is a doctor-on-call available. Please contact the front
desk for medical assistance. Medical fees can be directly charged to your medical
account.

Lakshman Sagar

Overview

Sprawling over 32 acres at the fringe of the Badlands of India, Lakshman Sagar was built in the
late 19th century as a hunting lodge by the then Thakur of Raipur, Lakshman Singh Ji to host
other noble families and British emissaries. As a continuation of the hospitality and traditions of
the house of Raipur, Kunwar Manavjeet Singh Raipur has envisioned a Getaway much like his
forefather Thakur Lakshman Singh Ji, though with a conservationist view of his heritage and
surroundings, all manifested through the endless details in the architecture & design, the cuisine,
and the well thought of activities & non-activities tailored personally for his guests in a
captivating natural topography ideal for mindless relaxation.

Architects Vasant and Revathy Kamath conceptualised twelve Shikar Ghars of about 1200 sq.ft.
each. As villas for guests. The Mardana and Zanana sections have books, music and other
comfortable seating arrangements where guests are welcome to lounge during mealtimes or
otherwise: there is no conventional demarcated dining area nor fixed menu system.

Industry Overview

The Growing Indian Hospitality Industry


India has the potential to become the number one tourist destination in the world with the demand
growing at 10.1 per cent per annum, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has
predicted.
The WTO (World Travel Organization) predicts that India will receive 25 million tourists by year
2015.
Major attractions in India are the world's highest mountains, miles of coastline with excellent
beaches, tropical forests and wildlife, desert safari, lagoon backwaters, ancient monuments, forts
and palaces, adventure tourism and, of course, the Taj Mahal.
India currently has over 200,000 hotel rooms spread across hotel categories and guest-houses and
is still facing a shortfall of over 100,000 rooms (source: FHRAI).
The country is witnessing an unprecedented growth in hotel constructions and will be adding

almost 114,000 hotel guest rooms to its inventory over the next five years. (source: HVS)

The earlier setbacks in global tourism have strengthened the Department of Tourism's resolve to
promote India's tourism through aggressive marketing strategies through its campaign 'Incredible
India'.
The 'marketing mantra' for the Department of Tourism is to position India as a global brand to
take advantage of the burgeoning global travel and trade and the vast untapped potential of India
as a destination.

What the future holds:


• Despite the global recession, inflation, terrorism and other factors, the overall outlook for
the Indian hospitality market is optimistic and will remain so says HVS
• India remains the second fastest growing economy in the world and the economic growth
of the country is at 7.1% of the GDP as declared by Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Finance
Minister, India.
• The Tourism Ministry, Government of India, has set a target of 10 million tourists to India
by 2010
• The WTO (World Travel Organization) predicts that India will receive 25 million tourists
by year 2015

Research Objectives
The current research was aimed at determining the importance of online marketing in hospitality
industry. The research focused on the following major issues:
• How can Internet be used to boost their sales?
• Do they select technology on the basis of an understanding of customer needs?
• How do they manage their customer relationships through internet?

Methodology
The research was exploratory in nature and adopted a two-stage process.

During the first stage, company’s online activities are researched so that we can understand how
much efficient they are till now in reaching their target customer.

In the second stage, planning a strategy to improve their customer reach and to boost the sales
through internet.
