San Diego, CA, August 12, 2010 -- Acclaimed judge of the Art of Photography Show
, Natasha Egan, the Associate Director and Curator at the Museum of Contemporary
Photography in Chicago, selected nine series to be featured in the exhibition.
These cohesive bodies of work will be represented in this major exhibition, whic
h features the top 111 images chosen out of 14,000 entries from 67 countries. It
is expected that the show will be viewed by over 30,000 people from August 28 t
o November 7, 2010.
“Serving as the sole juror for the Art of Photography Show was both an immense p
leasure and a daunting experience.” said Ms. Egan. “The works submitted astonish
ed me with their range in photographic style, technique, subject matter, and ide
as, and the photographs chosen for this exhibition reveal this diversity.”
Cynthia Bittenfield is among the photographers that will feature a series in the
exhibition. Her series "Rowing for Shore with Sinking Ships All Around" puts a
human face on the subject of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the diff
iculties so many US soldiers face readjusting to civilian life after returning h
ome from a combat zone. “Rowing for Shore with Sinking Ships All Around” tells t
he story of Sergeant Jacob B who joined the army at age 18, was honorably discha
rged, then later was reactivated and deployed to Iraq. Two weeks before he was s
cheduled to return home, two of his best friends were killed when a roadside bom
b exploded. He suffered from PTSD. After failing to receive adequate care and tr
eatment, Jacob committed suicide at the age of 26. To view Bittenfield’s images
which will be exhibited in the Show, please visit www.artofphotographyshow.com/2

Bittenfield’s work has been exhibited in numerous venues, namely the School of V
isual Arts Gallery and Broadway Gallery, both in New York City, The Print Center
in Philadelphia and in the upcoming show Photography NOW 2010 at The Center for
Photography at Woodstock. Bittenfield is a grant recipient from the School of V
isual Arts, New York, where she received her MFA in Photography, Video and Relat
ed Media. She lives in New York City.
Another featured photographer is Tomoe Murakami for his series “Approach to Invi
sible”. Murakami wrote: “I want to see what is ‘further on,’ what is ‘ahead’ – h
idden and invisible. But when I approach there, it disappears like a mirage. For
, the moment I arrived there, that ‘ahead’ was no longer ‘ahead.’ Further, I kee
p looking for what is farther on, looking for what, I think, I am able to see so
meday.” To view Murakami’s images which will be exhibited in the Show, please vi

Murakami was born in Chiba, Japan in 1980 and received a BA in Art and Literatur
e from Waseda University in 2004. Currently, he is a research associate at the T
okyo University of the Arts, Photography Center and resides in Tokyo.
Other photographers with series in the exhibition include: Francesca Bontempi, M
arcus Buck, Maury Gortemiller, Jukka Male, Kirk McKoy, Chris Sisarich, and Micha
el Ten Pas.
The Art of Photography Show is an international competition and exhibition of ph
otographic art based in San Diego. Entries for this year’s competition came from
67 countries with at total of 25 countries being represented in the ten week ex
hibition. The Opening Reception Gala is scheduled for Saturday, August 28 from 6
pm to 10pm. An estimated 1,500 people from all over the world will be in attenda
nce, including most of the exhibiting artists. A total of $10,000 in cash awards
will be presented that night to the top 15 artists chosen by Ms. Egan.
The fact that the Art of Photography Show is judged by a major museum curator ea
ch year is what differentiates the competition from other competitions. Photogra
phers rarely have the opportunity to reach these respected and influential peopl
e, which is why the show receives so many entries from world-renowned photograph
ers.
