When such damage is discovered, the rope shall either be remaved from service or given an inspection 8 detailed in para. 82.42 (05 Care shall be taken when inspecting, sections of rapid deterioration such as flange points, crossover Pints, and repetitive pickup points on drums. fc) Care shall be taken when inspecting certain ropes such as: 1) rotation-esistant rope because ofits higher sus. ceptibility to damage, inewased deterioration, and core failure {see Fig. 8) when working on equipment with limited design parameters. The internal deterioration of rolation-esistant ropes may not be readily observable. 2) boom hoist ropes because of the diffcultics of inspection and impertant nature of these ropes. 18-2.4.2 Periodic Inspection (a) The inspection frequency shall be determined by 2 qualified person and shall be based on such factors as expected rope life as determined by experience an the particular installation ar similar instalations, severity of environment, percentage of capacity lifts, frequency Copyright 2004 by tho Amerie [No reproduction ray be made of Dis mer rates of operation, and exposure to shock loads. Only the scface wires of the rope noed be inspected. No attempt shouldbe made to open the rope. Any detericeation resulting in appre~ ible loss of original strongth, such as described below, shall be noted and determination made as to whether farther use of the cope would constitute a hazard: 1) points listed in para. 82.4.1 (2) reduction of rope diameter below nominal damneter due tolos of core support intemal oresternal corrosion, oF weer of ouside Wires (See Fig. 8) (8) severely corroded oF broken wires at end con- nections (4) severely corroded, cracked, bent, worn, oF improperly applied end connections (5) wire rope clips for tightness (©) Care shall be taken when inspecting sections of rapid detergration, such as the followings (1) sections in contact with saddles, equalizer sheaves, or other shuaves there rope travel i limited (2) sections of the rope at or eae terminal ends where corroded or broken sires may protrude 8-2.4.3 Rope Replacement (a) No precise rules can be given for determination of the exact time for rope replacement since many’ variable factors are involved. (c} Rope should be maintained in a well-ubricated condition. ft is important that lubricant applied as part ‘of a maintenance program shall be compatible with the original lubricant, and to this end, the rope manufacturer should be consulted. Lubricant applied should be the type that does not hinder visual inspection. Those sec- tions of rope that are located over sheaves or otherwise hidden during inspection and maintenance procedures equire special attention when lubricating the rope. The ‘object of rope lubrication is to reduce internal fiction and to prevent corrosion. Periodic field lubrication is particularly important for rotation-resistant rope. (f) When an operating rope shows greater wear at well-defined localized areas than on the remainder of the rope, cope life can be extended {in cases where a reduced rope length isadequate) by cutting off a section at one end, thus shifting the Wear to different areas of the rope.
