All people in this world do not know all things. Our ancestors have stated this fact thus:

others, and impart to others what we know.
But some people are not inclined to learn from others. We must not attempt to advise such persons. Not
only will they spurn our good words, but will also insult us.
Take the example in Srimad Ramayana. Vibhishana tried to make Ravana follow the right path. But the
latter ignored the advice and went on to disgrace Vibhishana.
Similarly, in the Mahabharata, many people attempted to teach the righteous path to Duryodhana; but he
disregarded all counselling. We must not attempt to educate such people.
If you dye a white cloth with color, it will absorb the color. But a colored cloth will not easily accept any
other color. Hence, we should advise only those who have the inclination to heed our words. It is better to
abstain from advising the rest.

ARYABHATEEYA OR ARYABHATEEYAM
A
ryabhateeya or Aryabhateeyam, of Aryabhatta
(AD 476) a Sanskrit astronomical treatise, is
the magnum opus and only known surviving
work of that great 5th century Indian mathematician. It
is one of the earliest texts in Indian Astronomy, popular
and authoritative. It forms the basis for numerous later
works, which have come to be written and astronomical
practices evolved.
Aryabhateeya is divided into four sections or padas,
covering a total of 121 verses that describe different
results using a mnemonic style typical for such works
in India. It is marked for its brevity and conciseness
of composition.
1. The first part - Gitika paada - consists of 13
verses. It gives the definition of the large units
of time like the Kalpa, Manwantara, and Yuga
which present a cosmology different from
what is found in the earlier texts such as the
Vedaanga Jyothisha of Lagadha (ca.1st century
BCE). There is also a table of sines (jya), given
in a single verse. It gives the duration of the
planetary revolutions during a Mahayuga as
4.32 million years.
2. The second part - Ganitha paada - consists
of 33 verses. They cover the menstruation
(kaetra vyavahara), arithmetic and geometric
progressions, gnomon/shadows (shanku-
chaaya), simple, quadratic, simultaneous, and
indeterminate equations called kuttaka.
3. The third part - Kala kriya paada consists of
25 verses. It deals with different units of time
and a method for determining the positions of
planets for a given day, calculations concerning
the intercalary month (Adhikamasa), Kshaya-
tithis, and a seven-day week with names for the
days of week.

4. The fourth part - Gola pada consists of 50
verses. It details the geometric/trigonometric
aspects of the celestial sphere, features of the
ecliptic, celestial equator, node, shape of the
earth, cause of day and night, rising of zodiacal
signs on horizon, etc.
It is highly likely that the study of theAryabhateeyawas
meant to be accompanied by the teachings of a well-versed
tutor. While some of the verses have a logical flow, some
do not have the same and the lack of coherence makes
it extremely difficult for any casual reader to follow and
understand the text.
Indian mathematical works often used the word numerals
before the times of Aryabhatta. Aryabhateeyais the oldest
extant Indian work that deals with the alphabet numerals.
That is, it uses the letters of the alphabet to form words
with consonants giving digits and vowels denoting place
value. This innovation allows for advanced arithmetical
computations, which would have been considerably more
difficult without it. .
Aryabhateeyabegins with an introduction called the
Dasa Gitika or Ten Stanzas. This begins by paying
tribute toBrahman, the Cosmic spirit. Next, Aryabhatta
lays out the numeration system used in the work. It
includes a listing of astronomical constants and the sine
table. The book then goes on to give an overview of the
astronomical findings of Aryabhatta.
Most of the mathematics is contained in the next part, the
Ganitha paada or Mathematics.
The third section is the "Kala kriya" or "The Reckoning
of Time." In it, the text divides up days, months, and years
according to the movement of celestial bodies. It also
contains rules for computing the longitudes of planets.

The final section is the Gola or The Sphere, Aryabhatta
goes into great detail describing the celestial relationship
between the Earth and the Cosmos. This section is noted
for describing therotation of the earthon its axis. It
details rules relating to problems of trigonometry and the
computation of eclipses.
At least twelve notable commentaries were written for
the Aryabhateeyaranging from the time Aryabhatta
was still alive... The commentators includeBhaskara
IandBrahmaguptaamong other notable mathematicians.
VAKYA AND DRIG-GANITHA

One may ask whether our ancient astronomers were
not capable of predicting the eclipses precisely.
Unbelievably, even without any sophisticated
instruments that are available to our modern
astronomers, our ancients were capable of predicting
them very accurately that has won the admiration of
our modern scholars. Surya Siddhanta, Siddhanta
Sironmani and many other texts emphasize the need of
computing the correct positions of planets that have to
necessarily agree with observations. Later authors have
also emphasized the need for periodical corrections
for the vakya tables and prescribed the norms for
applying them. However, due to various reasons, such
instructions were given a goby or neglected altogether
and that only made the further calculations erroneous
without any agreement with the actual observational
positions of the planets.
Even in the modern times such corrections are
inevitable. For example, before 1919 astronomers were
using Hansens Tables for the calculation of the Moons
positions. The improved Browns Tables took over
and was in use till 1960. Since then with the advent of
computers such calculations have become easier and
accurate. Therefore we cannot hold that the tables of
Hansen or Brown were inaccurate. It only proves that
in the case of such celestial computations periodical
corrections may become necessary to fall in line with
those factors found correct by actual observations.
With so much of advancement in astronomical
knowledge, it has now been established that the period
of the rotation of the earth undergoes slight variations
because of its regular decrease in the rate of rotation.
This results in gradual lengthening of the day with
an irregular variation. Various factors like friction

of tides in the ocean bottom in the shallow seas and
subtle change of size of the earth cause these. These
variations are too minute and require sophisticated
ammonia or quart clocks to detect them. Because
of these only, the Universal Time, not increasing
uniformly, required replacement with a new measure
of time, termed as Ephemeris Time, from 1960. This
too has been replaced by Dynamic Time from 1984.
This is to prove that periodical corrections for various
astronomical contentions are inescapable. That is
why the vakya system of calculations has also become
outdated because of the refusal to incorporate the
necessary and timely corrections.
The most basic requirement for compiling a panchanga
is the correct value of the longitudes of the Sun, Moon
and the planets. When once this is done correctly, the
calculation of the ending moments of Tithi, Nakshatra,
Yoga and Karana become easier. For example the
ending moment of a Tithi is the time when the true
longitude of the Moon is ahead of that of the Sun by 12
degrees or its multiples. However, when these positions
of the Sun, Moon and other planets are wrongly arrived
the entire panchanga can become erroneous.
The computing the Drigganitha Panchanga nowadays
has become easier since the longitudes of the Sun and
other planets are provided by the Positional Astronomy
Centre, much in advance and the institution publishes
the Indian Astronomical Ephemeris well over a year
in advance. This can be of much help to the regional
panchang makers.
This note will not be complete without understanding,
at least cursorily, how the vakya calculations are done.
The first stage in the calculation is the reckoning the

commencement of the solar year. The count goes by
the popular 60 year cycle of Prabhava. Firstly, one must
identify the number of the current cycle. These vakya
calculations start from Saka 349. So far 26 cycles of
1560 years (6026) have been completed. The current
year is Vikriti; the 24th of the cycle, (23 completed)
corresponds to 1932 Saka. By adding 3179 to the Saka
year we get the current Kaliyugaadi as 5111.
The length of the solar sidereal year is taken as 365
days, 15 ghatikas, 31 Vighatikas, 15 tatparas, as per
vakya system. Based on this, the kalidina for the
beginning of the year Vikriti can be derived.
Likewise there is table for reckoning the past number
of days for the beginning of each solar month the
aggregate of which will tally with year length mentioned
above. Here the average movement of the Sun is
taken as one degree per day, which actually is not so.
However, some corrections are also prescribed which
is called the yogyadisamskaara. The longitude of the
Sun is derived thus and hence small discrepancies
creep in, as the values taken are only approximate.
Similarly the longitude of the Moon is also derived
by employing some constants. First the constant of
1811308 is deducted from the kalidina. The reminder,
is further divided by another constant 12372; further
reminder by 3031 and lastly by 248. The final reminder
minus one will determine the value to be taken from
the vakya table of daily Moon structured for values
from 1 to 248. This value, added to the products of
the three quotients derived earlier, with three separate
values for each, will bring the true longitude of the
Moon that may require a further correction called
manyadi samskaara, which is positive.
It can be seen that at every stage the calculation
proceeds with an assumed value of constants for
divisions and then fixed values in degrees, minutes
and seconds for deriving the products, whose total
will have to be added to the indicated value in the
vakya table, denoted by the final reminder, minus
one. These values and constants prescribed were
valid for the period when they were formulated. As
mentioned earlier, had these values been amended
(as prescribed) and rectified with the corrections that
were necessary from time to time, such discrepancies
would not have occurred in the current calculations of
the vakya system.

It must be noted that as far as the procedure for the
computation of planetary longitudes are concerned
the elements of modern astronomy are not in great
variance with the Siddhantic values. The difference
between the elements of planetary motions of the
Siddhantic treatises and of modern astronomy relate
to the computation of the mean motions of planets and
the Sun and the Moon, their apsides and nodes. For
these the Siddhantas rely on a constant motion from
the inception. The flaw arises here. These have a slow
accelerating or decelerating motion. This can alter
the mean motion depending on the epoch changes.
Modern astronomy has established this fact after
meticulous and long-term observations. The same is
the case with the values of the obliquity of the ecliptic,
equation of centre and inclination of orbits. Almost all
Siddhantas take the value of the obliquity of the ecliptic
as 24. Actually it was 23 278.3 in 1900 A.D. It is
23 26 19.52 on the 1st January 2010. Likewise there
are differences in the correction values, to be applied
to mean longitudes to arrive at the true longitudes.
Siddhantic treatises prefer only one equation of centre
correction for the Moon. Actually it needs several other
major corrections to be applied. In short, Drigganitha
helps us to arrive at the correct values for all these
whereas in Vakya the results obtained will not be
accurate.
It is enjoined in scriptures that rituals performed at
inappropriate times can not only forfeit the benefits
for which they are performed but also shower evil
effects. Panchangas have a responsibility to give actual
position of planets verifiable by observation. When it
comes to the correctness of calculations emotions or
orthodox feelings cannot be allowed to overrule the
accepted and accurate astronomical calculations. As
Jyothisham is a Prakthakhyam Sastram the compilers
of panchangas must reconcile and accept only the
calculations that tally with actual observation. There
cannot be two timings for the same phenomena like
tithi, nakshatra and others.
Therefore the options before us are either to accept
the elements of modern astronomy for compiling the
panchangas or suitably amend the elements of Surya
Siddhanta by fresh Bija correction and adopt another
Karanagrantha. For the panchangas and horoscopes
accuracy to the minute of arc is rather sufficient and

This year, this has a special significance, since
the Moon will be very close to earth - 3,56,509
kms 14th November. This event in proximity
was also witnessed in 1930 (January 14th) and in
1948 (January 26) 3,56,397 kms and 3,56,460
kms respectively. This will also happen later in
2034 too (25th November) when the Moon will
be 3,56,447 kms from the earth much nearer than this year.
Constellation of Super Moon
The Super Moon event will occur in the constellation of Krittika 1st
pada. Krittika is associated with Lord Muruga, ruled by Agni. Muruga is
said to have been born out of the Agni sparkle that came out from Lord
Shivas third eye. This constellation is depicted as a razor. Agni is the
link between humans and celestials and is often referred to as a purifier.
The first pada of this constellation is in Mesha and in the Navamsa of
Dhanus the 9th sign of the natural zodiac. 9th house relates to Dharma
and religion, since Dhanus is the center of the Milky way.
Drekana Effect of Super Moon
The Super Moon falls at 280 32 Aries in the third decanate ruled by
Jupiter, the wisdom lord. This decanate however is described as cruel,
skilled in arts, yellowish, fond of work, unprincipled with a stick, angry
and covered with purple cloth.

A
ngelina Jolie is a popular Hollywood actress. In her four decades of
life so far she has made headlines in four different ways - (1) as a
famous actor, (2) as having multiple partners of whom she married
3 legally and claiming to have had relationship with a female friend, (3) as
being fond of raising children of whom 3 are adopted ones and the other 3
her own kids and (4) having resorted to preventive surgery of her breasts
and ovaries to avoid getting afflicted with breast and ovarian cancer. The
first three are common in the general population but the 4th one is a new
trend in modern science of genetics and medicine that has raised the
possibility of getting cured from the dreadful cancer disease even before
it gets manifested in ones body.

Breast and ovarian cancer ran in the family of Angelina Jolie. Her mother,
grandmother and an aunt had died of breast cancer. As breast cancer is a
genetic disease, Jolie wanted to check whether she carried the defective
cancer gene. It was affirmatively found that she carried the defective
BRCA1 gene that gave her 87% risk of breast cancer and 50% risk of
ovarian cancer. Her mother had both these cancers and also carried the
same gene. According to the current level of scientific knowledge one can
save oneself from breast cancer or ovarian cancer if one does preventive
surgery well before the defective gene gets manifest as breast or ovarian cancer. Jolie underwent double
mastectomy surgery (removal of breasts) on February 16, 2013 to prevent onset of breast cancer. In March
2015 she was found to have early traces of ovarian cancer due
to this defective gene. She immediately had her ovaries and
fallopian tubes removed so that the defective gene cannot
find a location to manifest.

Jolies is an interesting case study because her horoscope

must indicate the genetic defect but a non- manifestation of
breast cancer. Though the non-manifestation of cancer was
made possible by surgery, it raises a question why and how
she was saved in time from the dreaded disease. As astrology
is also about remedies to correct the imbalances indicated by
the horoscope, a curious question arises what she has done
to avoid the occurrence of cancer though she had to undergo
the fears of getting cancer and the pains of surgery. These
issues are addressed in this article besides giving an outline
of the other three issues too.

performed after scrutiny of horoscopes for compatibility.
But of late many of the marriages life end in divorce and this
malady is on the increase. As a result of this the astrologers have to face
brickbats from all corners and the authenticity of astrology itself is put in
question. Divorces can be identified in a horoscope with good accuracy
and if properly diagnosed may be averted/avoided by suitable matching.

Now let us examine what are the factors common to the birth charts of the divorcees.
A study reveals that about 50% of marriages fail and end in divorce. Why
such a huge failure? One can blame the astrologer who unscrupulously
scrutinized and gave the permission to proceed with the alliance. Perhaps
this may be the challenge astrology today faces for the paucity in success
rates or unprecedented rise in divorces. Generally, when somebody tries
to introduce a new rule or procedure, the astrologic community would
ask to cite some dictum widely known as Pramanam. To those who seek
to cite such Pramanam my request is that this is only my observational
inference codified after analyzing quite a number of horoscopes of
divorced couples. You can take it for granted for the time being until it
is proved otherwise. If you find it baseless you can very well discard it.
On the other hand, if you find it relevant you can reckon it for guidance
and use it for matching and discard it if you feel otherwise. It may be
noted that there is nothing new to this theory. You can find it elsewhere
in classic texts of astrology.

1. Conjunction of lords of 6th and 7th houses. When the lords of 6th and 7th houses conjoin and are in any
house divorce is indicated. This is the most common feature in any divorcees birth chart. It is not quite
necessary that this combination need be in unfavorable houses.

2. Rahu-Ketuaxis (RKA) to pass through 6-12 houses. When Rahu is in 6th or 12th house divorce can be
foreseen. Affliction of 6th or 12th houses or both excites divorce.

3. Association of Saturn with 6th house. Saturns position, aspect or Navamsa generally provokes divorce.
In other words, Saturn in 6th, 4th, 9th or 12th houses excite divorce.

4. Sun in 7th house results in divorce. Sun being a fiery planet causes marital disharmony which eventually
results in discord.

5. Position of lord of 7th in 6th house and/or lord of 6th in 7th house and their parivarthanayoga (Exchange of
signs)

Why the 6th House?
Now a question may arise what is the relevance of 6th
house with divorce. The question is quite relevant. It
may be noted that 6th house is 12th from 7th house. Or
it is the house of destruction of 7th house. The lord
of 6th house is Nasasthanadhipaof 7th house. When
bhavadhipa conjoins with Nasasthanadhipa the house
ceases to give its good results. I recall the theory of
Marakadhipa of 8th house. It is a well-known theory
that the lord of 7th house destroys the longevity of the
native by destroying the features of 8th house, that
considers longevity. The same theory holds good here
also. Saturn is the significator of foulness or muddiness
and when posited in 6th house causes marital discord.
This is the reason when Saturn associated with 6th
house brings about such discomforts.
Now it is pertinent to think that when such a
planetary situation is found, would you recommend a
compatibility. Obviously it will not be recommended.
As a remedy the influence of Jupiter should be there
to avert the maleficence. Jupiter should be in Lagna,
4th , 5th, 7th or 9th houses or the presence of benefic
planets influencing Lagna or its lord in a peaceful way.
So if such a planetary situation as described above
is found in the horoscope of the native under
consideration, the influence of Jupiter in particular is
quite inevitable to avert a divorce. It should be noted
here that the situation that described above is not a
new theory of modern times. Such planetary positions
were present in olden days also. But divorces legally
or otherwise were not present in those days. But the
ladies sustaining distress and suffocation and remained
without being separated physically. Now in modern
times women are self-reliant and are feeling free to
break the bondage legally with ease. The influence of
western culture plays a significant role in this behalf.
Now let us examine some examples of horoscopes of
divorced persons and see how the above said rule is
relevant in each case. You can see the at least any one
or two planetary situations in each case invariably. The
names given in the following examples are imaginary
and the results are real.

In the example three conditions given in the thumb rule
are seen prevailing, viz., lords of 6th and 7th conjoined
and posited in 8th house, Surya in 7th house, and R-K-A
passes through 6-12 houses. It may be noted that the
presence of Lagnadhipa in the ascendant sign did not
save the native from the discord, being in retrogression.
Planets in retrogression are not conducive to give
any favorable result. The native got married in the
MD (maha dasa or main period) of Surya and Bhukti
(sub period) of 7th lord Budha and divorced in the PD
(paryandar dasa or Sub Sub Period) of Kuja after the
lapse of four months.
There may be a number of reasons that may tempt
the natives into divorce. These are not considered
or evaluated here. This paper considers only the
probability indicated for a divorce.
Here is a case in which Saturn is involved in 6th house
that causes divorce. Here you can see the Navamsa
of Saturn falls in 6th house or in other words the lord
of 6th house or Navamsadhipa, here, Sukra is the sign

excites the probability of divorce.

is a parivarthanayoga (Exchange of signs) of lord
of 7th with that of 5th house. When lord of 5th house
exchanges sign with the lord of the 7th house the lord
of 5th house can be considered as the lord of 7th house.
In that way there is association of lords of 6th and 7th
houses. (Rule#1)
The native of the above chart married twice and both
ended in a divorce. After a few years she had married
for the third time and even though the conjugal bliss
is poor the couple is just pulling on. In this case also
even though the aspect of the lord of Lagna is falling
on the 7th house that does not prevent the inevitable
divorce. That may be because the affliction of 6th house
is so much. Of course Guru is in retrogression.

A detailed guide of Trikonas and its role

in fast tracking Spiritual Awakening

T
he Mundane Trine Houses or the Trikona
Bhavanas ({H$moU ^dZ) of a horoscope are
ordinarily reckoned as the 5th and the 9th Houses
from the Ascendant (or Lagna). Hence it is said : -
Trikonam Navapanchakam ({H$moU Zdn#mH$). But as a
matter of fact by the term Trikona Houses should
be meant and is really signified not only the 5th and 9th
Houses from the Ascendant but also the 1st House or
Lagna also. This real meaning of the term Trikona
would be apparent not only from the Ascendant but
also the 1st House or Lagna also. This real meaning of
the term Trikona would be apparent not only from
the very prefix Tri (Three) which is added to the word
Kona (H$moU) signifying its triangular character thus
having one of its konas or angles fixed at the Lagna
itself), but also from a host of other facts. I shall dwell
upon them one after another.
(1) Some works in Astrology have clearly spoken of
Lagna as being both a Kendra (Ho$) Bhavana
and a Kona Bhavana as well.
(2) Among the many synonyms of the 9th House
we get one such term as tri-trikona ({-{H$moU)
also. Thus in the Jataka-Parijatha we get
Syat tri-trikonamudayannavamam Vadanti
(`m{-{H$moU_wX`md_ dXpV) (1-53)
This name tri-trikona for the 9th House very
clearly and without allowing any room for
doubt, shows that the tri or trisamkhyakah
trikonah ({g` H$ {H$moU) i.e., the 3rd trikona
is the 9th House (c.f. tri-trikonamiti tamasah
Saravali). Tri-trikona is the name of the House
of Tapas or religious ascetism which belongs
to the 9th House.
Cha indeed clearly indicates the inclusion of
Lagna also in the term Trikona .
(4) In some books of Astrology the 9th and the 5th
houses have been called Viseshakonam (C.f.
Navamam Panchamam Sthanam Visesham
Konamuchyate). This clearly indicates that
Lagna is the general or ordinary or samanya
konam as contradistinguished from the 5th and
the 9th which are Visesha Konam.
Now, one may question here that if Lagna
is really a Kona house also, why it is always
reckoned as a Kendra bhavana and not a
kona in all general judgments. The reason is
not far to seek. The thing is that of the two
characteristic features of Lagna (Ascendant)
viz., one being kendratva or quadrantness and
the other being trikonatva or trineness, the
former is so overwhelmingly strong as to drown
the trine house character of it completely to all
intents and purposes. Nevertheless the trine
house character of Ascendant is not lost though
rendered seemingly eclipsed by the quadrant-
house character of it.
Now, I shall proceed to narrate and illustrate the
characteristically specific nature of each of these three
Trine Houses with a special reference to the following
themes.
1. Vyaktitva-Personality.
2. Dhana-vaibhava-Riches and Prosperity.
3. Jnana-Knowledge.
4. Dharma- Religiousness Piety and Spirituality.
5. Kala-vibhagatva- Division of Time i.e., Present,
Past and Future character.

(3) The use of the particle Cha (M) having the
sense of Samucchaya or inclusion in the passage
Lagnattrikona Bha- vanam Navapanchamam
Cha (Jataka Parijata) which means the 5th and the
9th house also is called Trikona. Here the Sabda-
Svarasa i.e., the meaning-essence of the particle

All these three Trine Houses vis., the Lagna, the 5th and
the 9th houses have indeed reference to and bearing
upon, and causal relationship with all the above-
mentioned five items, but still each of these three
houses differ as the poles, inasmuch as they possess
distinctively different potentiality and pointedly

different phases of each of the five above-named
subjects.
Let me begin with :-
1. Vyaktitva - i.e., Person- particularly (i.e.,
Personality: In- dividuality: Idiosyncratic particularity or
Psycho-physical speciality) .
Before I proceed to discuss the subject, it is quite
meet and proper that the real underlying meaning of
the above-named three expressions should be clearly
brought out.
What is Personality? What is Individuality? and What
is Idio syncratic particularity?
The Personality of a person is an aggregate of those
characteristics of a person which strike and impinge
upon all observers. I cannot resist the temptation of
quoting here from a philosopher-astrologer who has
very happily put it thus :
The peculiarities in style of bearing, deportment,
mannerisms, voice-inflexion, mode of normal behaviour
etc., are the bricks of personality..........................
Personality consists of external presentation of a persons
subconscious mind (i.e. his habit-system).
Individuality is the aggregate of those highly specialized
and distinctive points of character which comprises
the deepest and the innermost part of a persons being.
Talents, insight and other subtle qualities which lie
latent in the innermost recesses of mind and ones
spirituality all these go to build up individuality.
Idiosyncratic peculiarity is the speciality of a persons
mental and physical constitution. It is both inborn and
acquired, being thus a joint product of both Nature and
Nurture. (Environment).It has a special reference to
the reactive part of a persons character i.e., It refers to
a persons moods and manners of response to stimuli
both external and internal.
In the light of this analytical exposition, it would be a
positive delight to find that the Lagnakona embraces
and represents all the above-mentioned three phases
combined in general, and one of them in special. This
special one is no doubt the particularity of mental and
physical constitution, (i.e., Varna, Akriti and Prakriti)
of a person.
Thus it would be found that the first House of
Lagnakona is a representative of the Idiosyncratic
peculiarity, the 5th House or 2nd Kona is a representative

of the Personality, and the 9th House of 3rd Trikona is
a representative of Individuality (or Spirituality) of
a person in special.
As the Lagna embraces the qualities of all the 12
houses in it, it comes as a corrolary that the 5th and the
9th houses also, are in it in the seed form. In this universe
of thought and existence, there are really Three Great
Centres viz., (1) the Matter, (2) the Mind and (3) the
Spirit corresponding to the three great astrological
elements. Viz., the Ascendant, the Moon and the Sun.
It would be a real pleasure to know that the Three
Konas are really the representatives of these three
Great Centres respectively viz. (1) physicality proper
(i.e. idiosyncratic peculiarity or rather the psycho-
physical constitution speciality this is the Lagna
kona). (2) Personality (this is Moon) (this is the 5th
house or the second Trikona) and (3) Individuality (or
spirituality) (this is Sun) (this is the 9th house or the
third Trikona).
The Lagna (or Ascendant) gathers up together the
influences of all the twelve mundane houses into one
and thus stands for the Body in general, and for the
Head and the Brain in particular, as the controlling
pivot of the body. Even Mind cannot manifest itself
without a physical vehicle, (which is Body) and there
also it is limited, by the latter's limitations. It is thus that
many important traits of character may never find the
daylight of expression due to the limiting conditions
of the physicality which is exactly the case in a person's
Ascendant or Lagna.
The Moon is a recipient of the solar light and it is also
a transmitter of the same. Thus it receives the rays only
to transmit them just as a bank receives deposits only
to lend out or transmit to others. Indian astronomers
have also said in the same strain :- Salilamayo Hi
Chandralokah Tam Pravisanti Tapanagavastayah
(i.e., the Moon is-surcharged with moisture and the
rays of the Sun penetrate into it). The Moon rules the
Mind of man and it has been clearly indicated by such
expressions as Chandramah Manaso Jatah etc., i.e.,
the Moon is born of the mind of the Kalapurusha. The
5th house rules Dhi or Mati i.e., the deliberation,
decision and direction of the Mind, and thus indicates
human wishes and desires just as the Moon shows
our desires and aspirations. The Moon signifies all
things intermediate between the Ego(which is Sun i.e.
Hridisthah Purushah or Hrishikesa who resides in the
heart of every man) and the physical Earth of which it
desires experience. In the same manner the 5th house
manifests itself not only in the shape of a persons

Personality (i.e., the ultimate developed system of his
habits and the external expression of his subconscious
Mind) (Sun) (which is working behind) but also in the
form of a persons wishes and desires, his feelings and
emotions, his passions and pleasures.
The Sun is the centre of all Light, Heat and Illumination.
Exactly the same role belongs to the 9th house.
It is the 9 th house which illumines our SELVES
and brings to light our Individuality. i.e., the real
spiritual nucleus. Sun is regarded as the soul of the
universe. Verily so is the 9th house which represents
the soul or the spirituality of the person. Just as
the term Individuality is meant the latent innermost
(i.e. , Nihito Guhiyam) luminous energy as distinguished
from personality or the outer manifestation phases
and also as distinguished from Physicality (the outer
responsive and reactive constitutional peculiarity) so
by the 9th house is indicated the whole train of the
latent innermost talents and faculties, the spirtuality
and the intuitive insight which all lie embedded in
the profound recess of a mans essence. Just as the
essence of Individuality is based on the fundamental
principle I am I (i.e., ahamkara or ahamjnana). So
the special faculty of Jnana and Vijnana (i.e., the
deep and profound knowledge of Within- both analytic
and synthetic) is a special feature of the 9th house.
2. To turn to the second theme viz., Riches and
Fortune:-
All the three Trikonabhavanas viz., the 1st, the 5th
and the 9th are Lakshmisthanas (b_rWmZ) i.e., the
bringers and harbingers of Money and Good Luck. But
eachof the three houses has its own peculiarly special
distinctive feature. Thus the 1st house stands for body
and the brain and good luck. Indeed the soundness and
efficiency of the body and the brain are the rudimental
factors in the earning of money. Just as without a sound
body-condition no industry or perseverance is possible,
so also without a sound brain-condition no good plan,
programme or well defined way can be formulated
which may help to bring wealth. Mens Sana Incorpore
Sano i.e., sound mind in a sound body, is the most
fundamental and basic condition of all acquisition of
wealth.
It is therefore that Lagnapati in Lagna or fully
aspecting the Lagna makes one highly rich and he is
never to be found in want of money. (C.f. V`Joho gXm
b_r`` Xoho VZyn{V .... It will thus be seen that the 1st
house specially shows that wealth which is the direct
product of physical labourand brain power.

The 5th House :- The 5th house is indeed a very powerful
fortune-bringing house. (C. f. Panchamamcha
Dhanasthanam Visesham Dhanamuchyate- Brihat
Parasara.) Some astrologers call the 5th house as the
only Laksmi Bhavana without styling the other konas
as such, thus showing the importance and possibly the
predominance of the 5th houseover the other wealth-
bringing houses (C.f. the horoscopes of Rockfeller,
Ford, Rothschild, Tata etc.). In the same manner the 10th
house has been called the only Vishnusthana ({dUwWmZ)
in exclusion of the other quadrants or Kendra houses
by some writers. Now, what are the special features
then of the 5th house wealth? The special feature of
the 5th house wealth is that the money may come from
lottery or speculation, from race-course or from
cinema or other amusement hall or from educational
institutions or from agriculture and irrigation. As the
5th house is the 2nd house (Dhanasthana) of the 4th
house which indicates land and education (^y{_-{dm) it
shows the income from land either from agriculture or
arbori culture or horticulture or from land transaction
or from mineral and vegetable i.e., the products of
the surface and the underneath of the soil. Thus the
5th house includes income from the business of coal,
petrol, mineral oils, iron, aluminium, magnesium, mica,
gold, silver etc., which are all the issue of the 5th house
indeed. The 5th house also indicates income from ones
mother (in a male horoscope) and income from father
(in a female horoscope) as it is the 2nd house from the
4th house which represents parents.
As the 5th house represents love affair and public life
also, it no doubt also indicates income from both these
sources.
The 9th House :-This house also is a bringer of fortune
and money; but in a way quite diffe rent from that
of the first and the fifth. Thus it being the 2nd house
from the 8th (the house of death), money by death or
legacy is here indicated. As this 9th house is also the 3rd
house from the 7th (marriage partner, commerce, trade
and business in general) it indicates money from the
marriage partner or through marriage or from trade,
commerce and business in general. The 9th house being
the reflex of the third and the 3rd house being the house
of effort and energy i.e., Vikrama ({dH$_) bhavana,
it indicates also money from business partners or
marriage partners exertion. The 9th house also shows
money from father as the 9th house is the house of
father. The 9th house is also the 4th house (land and
house) of the 6th (enemy) and thus a strong 9th house
quality may bring money in an unexpected manner from

enemys land and property. The 9th house also indicates
money got by spiritual power and also from religious
rites (e.g., the office of a priest or clergy) and from
very distant voyages or travels: as all these assets are
the special features of the 9th house.
3. Now, to the third aspect of the Trikona houses
viz., the different forms of Jnana or Knowledge:-
The 1st house denotes specially the head or the
brain and hence is linked directly with rationalistic
knowledge or knowledge from reasoning (C. f.
Cognition). The 5th house is linked more with feelings
and emotions and with the desires and willings (C. f.
Emotion and Volition). I dont hereby mean to say that
the 5th house has nothing to do with reasoning proper
but that the reasoning faculty is kept subservient to the
more powerful functions of this house viz., feelings and
desires. The 9th house knowledge is Vijnana ({dkmZ)
i.e., the ripe spiritual knowledge and also Prajnana
(kmZ), i.e., the ripe experience or cream of scientific
knowledge derived from inspection, and investigation
i.e., induction in general. This house very relevantly
relates to intuitive knowledge or insight. It also denotes
ones efficiency in the second sight or Tritiya Chakshus
(VVr` Mjw) affairs. This fact is also nicely discernible
from the other 9th house function viz., very distant
voyage and travel. The very distant travel in the realm
of knowledge is undoubtedly the spiritual insight or
intuitive power in general.
4. The 4th phase of Trikona houses viz: Dharma
(Y_), (i.e., re- ligion and piety) :-
In all Religious evolutions whether it be of an
individual or of a society or a community or a nation,
we always find that there is a cycle of three distinct and
distinctive stages - one of (a) Karma (Work), one of
(b) Bhakti (Devotion) and one of (c) Jnana (Knowledge).
Indeed, each stage has its interdependence on and
intimate relationship with the two other also, but still
one of the three is found to dominate, to preponderate
and to rule over the other two although not ruling out
any of them totally in any way. Indeed Religion is a
happy harmonious and rhythmical combination of
all these three viz., Karma, Bhakti and Jnana: just as
the human body is ruled and functioned by a happy
combination of Kapha, Pitta and Vayu-no one of them
ruling out the other two (although one may happen
to dominate over the other two) but all working
to- gether and fully functioning in a rhythmic role
as a concordant whole without impeding any of its

brothers. The only remark able fact is that one of them
becomes predominant and stands out to rule over the
others for some time or period. The Bhagavad-Gita
shows Jnana-Karma- Bhakti samuchhaya i.e., Dharma
as a combination of Jnana, Bhakti and Karma. C.f.

Thus to have a glimpse into the Religious Evolution
of the Vedic Aryans we find that in the Samhita stage
Bhakti (or Devo- tional spirit) rules supreme keep-
ing the others in abeyance, while in the Brahmana
period Karma (H$_) (i.e., Ritualistic rigour) greater
utterance, while in the Upanishadic (Cn{ZfX) period
Jnana (Vijnana and Prajnana) (high Metaphysical
knowledge opened out the doors of spiritual insight
and of the realisation of the Supreme. What is true to
a society or community, is also true to an individual.
The same system rules and the same prevails. In the
Bhakti stage we feel the Supreme, in the Karma stage
we labour into and thus awaken us into the Supreme
(C.f. the Mother has said Work is the bodys prayer to
the Divine) and in the Jnana stage we recognise, realise
and identify ourselves with the Supreme. (Bhakti is like
the juice and pulp of a fruit, Karma is like the rind or
epidermal layer and Jnana is like the stone of the fruit).
The three trine houses have very fittingly been called
the Punya Bhavanas or the holy houses; as they
represent religiousness and piety in all its phases and
in all stages. It would thus be highly interesting to
discern in the 1st Kona or Lagna (which typifies the
body) karmic predominance, wthout however denying
the other two, and in the 2nd Trikona (5th house) which
has been stamped as Deva Bhakti Bhavana (or
devotion to God house) the devotional spirit and power
of the native more than the other two; and in the third
Trikona (9th house) Jnana (both Vijnana and Prajnana)
i.e. (spiritual insight and realisation more than the
other two trikonas). This 9th house or 3rd trikona is
the cognitive Minds remotest journey or voyage into
the realm of spiritual or superphysical recognition. As
this third trikona signifies the ultimate finding of an
individual and his cream of knowledge and experience,
it also indicates the very perfections in the physical
sciences (e.g., physics, chemisty, biology, mineralogy,
astronomy etc.) which my rightly be called super-
physical (so to speak), in view of the extreme subtleness
and abstruseness of the findings.
Let me illustrate by actual horoscopes both the cases (a)
Vijnana (high metaphysical knowledge which belongs

to the 9th house) and (b) Prjnana (high superphysical
knowledge, so to speak, of the physical sciences which
also belongs to the 3rd trikona, one by one.
(a) Vijnana : - Sankaracharya. In this horoscope, we find
the 9th house i.e. Vijnana (metaphysical knowledge)
most predominant. The exact date and time of
Shankaracharyas birth has not been finally settled.
But there is a consensus of opinion in all biographies
about one fact i.e. that Lagna was Karkata (Cancer)
and that Jupiter was in exaltation in the Lagna. The
9th house from Karkata Lagna is Meena (Pisces)
whose lord Jupiter not only typifies all ripe and keen
knowledge but also due to his exaltation in Cancer in
the 1st house (Kendra Bhavana) he shows a very high
order of metaphysical knowledge. Jupiter being in
Cancer a quadrant house has his strength both natural
and accidental at its height, at the time of his birth.
Ramanujacharya : Bhakti ruled over jnana in
Ramanujacharyas life; and this is vindicated by the
lord of 5th (Mangala) being in the Mulatrikona huse
and in the highest kendra (10th) culminating.
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa : The life of this sage
was a practical exemplification of Karma, Bhakti and
Jnana samucchaya i.e. all the three equally strong and
dominant in his horoscope. We find the Lagnadhipathi
(Saturn) posted in the 9th house, that is to say, Karma
planted in Jnana and Saturn being in exaltation here,
shows his karmic perfection in his Panchavatvana
asceticism. Both Lagna (Karma) and Lagnadhipathi
(karmic energy) are fully aspected by Jupiter (Jnana)
showing all his karma to have been always planted in
Jnana. The lord of the 5th house (Bhakti) is in Lagna a
most powerful kendra and kona as well, thus showing
his karma or work always coupled with Bhakti or
devotion. The 5th house also is inhabited by Jupiter
showing that Bhakti is ruled by Jnana. The lord of the
9th (Jnana Bhavana) Venus himself showing love and
devotion means that love and devotion ruled his Jnana
as well and this Venus being in his exaltation in Meena
(Pisces) shows his devotional spirit to be the most
supreme although grounded in jnana or metaphysical
knowledge. The 9th house i.e. the house of knowledge is
occupied by Saturn who is lord of the Lagna and Saturn
is in his exaltation house here (Libra). This means that
his metaphysical knowledge is occupied and ruled by
karma i.e. full, active, missionary life. Indeed, he was
a very great preacher and of a very high order too.
(b) Now I shall dwell upon the second class i.e., (b)
group of horoscopes viz., the Janma Kundalis of those

savants who excelled in their subtle knowledge and
findings in the Physical sciences, thus illustrating the
dominance and strength of the 9th house over the other
two trikonas in their horoscopes :-
Sir Issac Newton : His ascendant is Libra. The lord of
the 9th house (Gemini) is Mercury who happens to
be fully aspecting the 9th house (his own house) from
Sagittarius. The 9th house from Sun (in Sagittarius) is
Leo whose lord Sun is himself and is in the 1st house
from the Sun in his friends (Jupiters) house. The
9th fromMoon (who is in Gemini) is Aquarius, whose
lord Saturn is occupying his own house, that is to say,
is Sva-kshettrastha (djoW) and also Moolatrikoni i.e.
Ananda Bhavanastha. He is further in conjunction
with Jupiter who happens to be the lord of the 10th or
Distinction House, thus showing Newtons distinctive
insight into the causation of natural phenomena.
Michael Faraday : His 9th house from Sun (in Virgo) is
Taurus whose lord Venus is occupying his own house
Libra, the 2nd house from the Sun. The 2nd house is the
house of higher mathematics, abstruse sciences and
philosophy. These facts indicate, therefore, very clearly
his keen intellectuality and shrewd discernment. The
9th house from Moon (in Cancer) is Pisces whose Lord
Jupiter is fully aspecting his own house from Virgo.
As his birth time is not known, no judgment from his
Ascendant is possible.
Lord Kelvin: InLord Kelvins horoscope, the 9th
house from Sun (in Gemini) is Aquarius whose lord
Saturn is, curiously enough, fully aspecting his own
house. The 9th house from Moon (in Gemini) is also
Aquarius and the result is the same.
Thomas Alva Edison : In Edisons horoscope, the 9th
house from Ascendant (Libra) is Gemini whose lord
Mercury is in a quadrant house (in the 4th house in
Capricornus) and enjoying, curiously indeed, his own
exaltation Navamsa there. The lord of the 9th house
is Mercury who is also fully aspected by Jupiter, (a
planet betokening high super-physical knowledge)
from Taurus, where he is enjoying the Vargottama
Navamsa. The 9th house from Sun (in Aquarius) is
Libra whose lord Venus is in Lagna-quadrant from the
Sun and is very strong there being both Uchchabhilashi
(aspiring for his exaltation house) and also Vargottama
in Aquarius. The 9th house from Moon (in Sagittarius)
is Leo whose lord Sun fully aspects the 9th huse, being
in conjunction with the lord of the 3rd house (high
intellectuality).

Laplace : This French Astronomer has been called
the French Newton. He has his 9th house from Sun
(who is in Pisces) in Scorpio. Its lord Mars is in the
highest quadrant in Sagittarius, culminating. The 9th
house from Moon (in Scorpio) is in Cancer, whose
lord he is himself, thus being in quadrant and past the
Nichamsa in Scorpio.
Sir J.C. Bose: The 9th house from Sir J.C. Boses
Ascendant (Aries)is Sagittarius whose lord Jupiter is in
the 2nd house which is Visesha Vidyasthana and which
specially indicates higher mathematics and physics. The
9th house from Sun (in Scorpio) is Cancer whose lord
Moon is in Libra. Although he is in the 12th house from
the Sun, he enjoys Vargottama Navamsa. The 9th house
from Moon (in Libra) is Gemini whose lord Mercury
(Mathematics) is fully aspecting his own house and
is conjoined with benefic Venus (higher physics)who
also, strangely enough is fully aspecting the 9th house.
5. The trine houses may be looked into from
another very important aspect also viz., the Time aspect;
thus giving us a glimpse into an individuals evolution
with the progress of time. Thus a mans Past, Present
and Future all these three Time landmarks are to be
found in nutshell in these trine houses the 5th house
showing an individuals Past, the 1st house (Lagna)
showing his present and the 9th house showing his
Future with all its phases and potentialities.
A persons desires and yearnings are the basic remnant
waves of his actions and hankerings in his past life, and
it lingers into and is developed into the present life
through a transmission of the Puryashtaka (nw`>H$) i.e.
, the subtle body after death (C.f `XmJwUmH$mo ^ydm ~rO`mgw
M[aUw M & g_m{de{V gg>VXm_mZ {d_w#m{V

The Puryashtaka is the very subtle and fine body
which a person takes after his demise. It consists of the
fine five elements or Pancha Bhuta, the fine Indriyas
and very fine Manas and Buddhi and Vasana and
Karma and Vayu and Avidya. C.f.

deeds in the past which are going to equip him and make
him fit for the struggle for existence and progressive
development in a particular manner in the present life
represented by lagna or the 1st Trikona. The 9th house
indicating insight, intuition, spiritual or metaphysical
or superphysical knowledge which go to indicate how
a person is going to unfold himself in the present life
in order to fit himself into his own acquired future. The
9th house as the house of Dharma (Y_) (C.f. Dharanat
Dharmah Ityuchyate) (i.e. Dharma is that thing
which sustains and holds and perpetuates us) shows
how a person is going to protect or preserve himself
in future through his Dharma which is nothing short
of Varma(d_) the coat of armour) which is meant for
shielding him. Full traces and marks of how a person
is going to evolve himself in future through his present
deeds, are thus to be sought for and found in the 9th
house i.e., the third Trikona.
I have thus here considered the peculiarities and the
specialities belonging to each of these Trikona or Trine
houses which all combined re present one full Cosmic
Unit one complete psychophysical product, in the full
evolution of an individual. The three trikonas or trine
houses thus represent the groups of three distinctive
phases in the complete development of a Being,
through the Past, the Present and the Future, the Being
thus having his own discrete mould and stamp.
Parellelism from Palmistry
These three trine houses also represent a nice parallel
to the three main lines in the palm of every individual,
viz. (1) Life Line corresponding to the 1st house or
Lagna) (2) the Heart Line (corresponding to the 5th
house (C.f. Leo is the 5th sign or part of a Kalapurusha
and this also indicates the heart of the Kalapurusha
and (3) the Head Line (corresponding to the 9th house
) (the house of knowledge, religion and piety) (C.f. the
9th house of Kalapurusha which is Sagittarius. This
sign represents the high or upper leg showing higher
level of travel both in the terrestrial tourings in holy
realm of metaphysical knowledge, second sight etc.)
The Life line really represents in the Science of
Cheirosophy, a persons Karma or achievements as a
direct result of his own exertions i.e. the effort of his
body limbs. Thus the 1st house or Lagna also shows the
body of the native in astrology.

It is extremely interesting to discern also that the
three trine houses of Astrology present a fine parallel
and counterpart in the three divisions in the finger
portion of the palm also viz., (a) the top phalanges of
the finger (b) the middle phalanges and (c) the third
or bottom phalanges. It is curious to observe that the
Cheirosophists find in the uppermost divisions spiritual
and super-physical traits, and in the middle mental
and intellectual powers, and in the lowest zone i.e. in
the lowermost phalanges the physical and the material
assets of a person.
Again we find that the Cheirosophists divide the
whole palm again into three zones viz., the first zone
representing the finger portion (the carpal processes,
the second zone covering the upper half of the
Metacarpal portion and the third zone representing
the lower half of the Metacarpal region of the palm.
In this arrangement of zone division, the finger
portion represents the spiritual abilities, activities and
potentialities of a person; the second zone shows the
mental and intellectual , while the third zone represents
the physical and material one. Indeed, it is a highly
verified fact in the science of Palmistry that persons
having very long finger portions are highly spiritual
and have developed super-physical knowledge (C.f.
the 9th house or the third trikona).
In the Tantrasastras the Trikona Bhavana always refers
to the Matri-Chakra or Devi-Chakra (_mVMH$ dm XodrMH$)
which is the real source of all power and potentiality in
the cosmic evolution of the universe. Similar is the case
with our small body with its full Trinity (viz., physical-
mental and spiritual aspect), which is only a miniature
replica of the bigger universe the Microcosm being
but an exact mirror of the Macrocosm in the form of
an epitome.
In the Vedas and Upanishads
These three Trikona Bhavanas or Trine Houses also
represent the full Pranava or omkar (H$ma) which
underlies every phenomenon and every substance.
The three syllables of Pranava are A(A) U(C) and
M(_) representing the three different phases of the
same Paramatma or PARABRAHMA and also the
three different stages of Jivatma (Ordm_m) (i.e. the
individual soul) also.

It is also remarkable that the higher metaphysical
knowledge at last leads to Moksha or Laya in
the Parabrahma. Sivaor Rudra indeed betokens
annihilation or Laya. And Moksha or Nirvana is no
doubt the total annihilation of the Individual Being,
in the Supreme Spirit.
Thus it will be found that the Trikona houses
are the most vital and essential houses of the horos-
cope, representing and comprehending fully the Trinity
In reality, these three embrace fully the life all the
houses. In other the Lakshmi Bhavanas or the Sakti
houses are the real Power Houses of the Vishu Bhavanas
which are the Kendras or quadrants. (C.F. Markandeya
PUranas Duruga Saptasati where all the powers of all
the gods, mustered into one and were united to form one
Great Sakti which is Vaishavi or Lakshmi or Chandika
or Durga). It is these houses of the horoscope which
impregnate the life of every individual with rhyme and
rhythm, with law and order, with a full array of all the
essential factors or elements which contribute to an
individuals full evolution, and thus ring the vibration of
Omkar (H$ma) through every individual and thus bring
his fullest unfoldment, development and fulfilment on

Sri Surya Prakash Memorial Endowment Lectures

He first Surya Prakash Endowment lecture at the Indian Institute of World Culture, Bangalore, insituted
by Raman & Rajeswari Research Foundation was delivered by Dr. T. S. Vasan and Raman Suprajarama,
the erstwhile grandson of Dr. B. V. Raman on 9th September 2016 on Demystifying Astrology. The duo
kept the audience very much engaged and answered the audience queries with ease to their satisfaction.

The second Surya Prakash Endowment lecture at the Indian Institute of World Culture, Bangalore was
delivered by Prof. Gajendra, Secretary, Karnataka Federation of Astrologers and a scholar in Jyotisha, on
the fascinating subject of Pancha Pakshi Sastra. Prof. Gajendra who runs the Aditya School of Astrology and
trains hundreds of students mentioned that mention of this Sastra is made in the in the Taittiriya Upanishad.
He spoke on the much unknown science and kept the packed audience spell bound with his oratory skills
and abundant knowledge of the subject.

Music Legend Passes Away

Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, a global icon of carnatic music, with
a magnificently rich voice breathed his last 22nd November 2016
in Chennai after prolonged illness. He was 86. The singer, who
dedicated his life to to the cause of music and took it to international
platform was known for his beautiful compositions. A child prodigy
who rose to become a musician of immense versatility in all fields and
held sway over rasikas with his mesmerising voice and unique way
of rendering compositions, Dr. Mangalamapalli Balamuralikrishna
was awarded France governments Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts
et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters).

With over 25,000 concerts to his credit, worldwide, the great music
collosus was known for his legendary collaborations with other
greats like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
Being well versed in violin too, Dr. Balamurali Krishna is credited with composing music and acting in
several Kannada films too, apart from having left his imprint as a composer, poet, multi instrumentalist
and innovator

Dr. Balamuralikrishna had very great regard to Dr. B. V. Raman & Smt. Rajeswari Raman, the Chief
Editor's parents and visited our home several times. In fact he performed at one of Dr. B. V. Raman's
birthday events in Bangalore.

The singer-composer Mangalamapalli Balamuralikrishna, caught the nations attention in Doordarshans

iconic music video Mile Sur Mera Tumhara in the eighties. With a voice magnificently rich and instantly
recognisable, Balamuralikrishna excelled not only as singer but left his imprint as a composer, poet, multi-
instrumentalist and innovator of ragas and taalas.

of Mahadasa known to our astrologers, viz., the
Vimshottari, the Ashtottari and the Yogini, the first
one being in general use in Northern India. The table
above gives the periods allotted to each planet and the

II. Effect of Adopting Different Planets for a
Hyleg : Some learned astrologers advocate the adoption
of the application of Vimshottari Dasa System not to
the Moon at birth but to the nakshatra occupied by the
Lagna. (i.e. Ascendant) or by the Sun, whichever of
the two would be considered as the strongest. I think,
astrologers are justified in making such a change,
when it is the birth horoscope (Lagna Kundali) and
not the Rasi Kundali which would be seen to control
a particular child; but I do not know any quotation
from old books on astrology which one should quote
in support of this change. The effect of taking Lagna,
in place of the Moon, or the Sun in place of the Moon
would cause a change in planets periods so much, that
it would be rather unwise even to try to compare them.

First column gives the English dates and next to it the names of the regional months and dates. The ending moments of
Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana are given in the 24 hour clock extending to 30 hours.
Of the Nityayogas, Vishkumbha, Parigha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Vyaghata, Vaidhruthi, Sula, Ganda and Atiganda are generally
spurned for auspicious events and they are marked in red in the Panchanga. Vydhruti pervades from 34640 to 360 and
Vyatipata from 21320 to 22640 of the sum of the Nirayana longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti and Vyatipata
punyakaala are observed on the day when the yogas prevail for 1 hours or more, when Sraddha is performed by the
astute. These two belong to the shannavati -96- Sraddhas ordained for a householder. Considering the astronomical
implications, the Sayana Vydhruti and Vyatipata days are also indicated in the Panchanga. The auspicious Amritayoga
and Siddhayoga and inauspicious Maranayoga and Prabalarishtayoga come under Amirtaadiyoga scheme and are different
from the Nityayogas.
The Karana is the half of the Tithi. They are mainly classified as Sthira - fixed or immovable and Chara or moveable.
The Chara Karanas are seven in number and the Sthira are only four. The fixed ones are inauspicious. They are Sakuni,
Chatushpada, Naga and Kimsatugna. The seven movable Karanas are in their order, Bava, Baalava, Kaulava, Taitila,
Gara, Vanija and Vishti (or Bhadra.) Among the movable Karanas Vishti or Bhadra is considered to be of dreadful. The
forbidden Karanas are marked in red for easy identification.
We have most of our religious observances pegged on to the Tithis. Pournamipooja Chandradarisana, Sankataharachaturthi
Vrata, Shastivrata, Ekadasi Vrata and Pradosha are specially mentioned in the Panchanga. Pournamipooja is done in the
evenings on days the full Moon is prevalent. Chandradarisana is observed on the evening on the day when the crescent
Moon appears for the first time in the west after the Amavasya. Chaturthi of the Krishnapaksha or Bahula Chaturthi of
every month is known as Sankataharachaturthi. The evenings of Sukla and Krishna Trayodasi days are specially observed
as Pradosha Vrata days.

III. Effect of adopting Different Dasa Systems : It
can be easily seen that the dates of va rious planetary
periods and sub-periods are affected to a very great
extent, if we compare the Dasa systems themselves,
e.g., in the case of the child in t he above example, the
Ashtottari system would give Dasa of Ravi (Sun) at
birth in place of Sani as given by the Vimshottari, while
if Yogini Dasa system be followed, the child would be
said to be influenced by the Dhanya dasa; and when
we take into consideration the factors of ayanamsha
and hyleg discussed above, an impartial leader will at
once agree with me that there is bound to be a lot of
confuion in the matter and the claiming of 70 percent
(say) result by the follower of each system would carry
no weight with him.
What does Gouri Jataka say : The Gauri Jataka appears
to follow the Vimshottari Mahadasa system as far as t
he order of dasas planets is concerned; but it follows a
definitely different method while calculating only the
Bhogya Mahadasa period. The rule is easy enough to
understand. The verses given by the author run thus ;

Method : Note down the Nakshatra at birth and the
concerning planet. Convert the Nakshatra elapsed at
birth into Ghatis and Vighatis. Multiply the Ghatis by
120 and divide the result by 90, or multiply the Palas by
120 and divide the result by 90, or multiply the Palas by
120 and divide the result by 5400. The answer would be
the Bhukta period in years, etc.. Subtract the Bhukta
from 120 years, giving the span of life. Divide this
span into periods of nine grahas in their usual order
and in the ratio of span of life (maximum period 120).
Calculate the dasas and Antardasas for other planets
similarly.
Example : In the case of the child, we find from
Panchanga that the elapsed Pushya was 8 ghatis and 1
498 120
8 vig., i.e., 498 vi. The Bhukta Sani is given by
90 60
= 11 years 0 m. 24 days. Subtracting this from 120
years, we get 108 years 11 m. 6 d, as the span of life.

The periods for Budha, Kethu, Sukra etc. should be
calculated in the same way in the ratio of 1 09/120
approximately.
There is still another system of Gouri Jataka in which
people uniformly deduct 2 years for each planet (at
birth) giving the period of the child while in the womb,
and then calculate the Bhukta and Bhogya periods.
Before recommending to readers the application of this
system, I desire to place before the learned readers my
views which I have formed after observing some facts
about the three principal Dasa systems of directional
astrology.
Observation No. I : In the Ashtottari system, the planets
receive alternatively groups of 4 and 3 continuous
Nakshatras for their control, the number of Nakshatras
being 28, while in Yogini and Vimshottari systems
only 27 Nakshatras are allotted, one to each plnet or
Dasa in succession and the Dasas follow in 3 rounds,
so that each round separately gives 3 6 or 120 years
This fact shows that Ashtottari must have come
the Vimshottari (which appears to have taken some
principles from each) must have come into existence.
Observation No. II : The commencing planets are
Ravi, Chandra and Mars, while the Dasas seem to
be Mangala (i.e. belonging to Mars) in all the three
cases, in the beginning, as will be shown by a diagram,
which shows that the period of Mars becomes a natural
point of division.
(a) Under the Ashtottari:-
Mars controls 8 4 = 32 yrs.
Mercury controls 17 3 = 51 yrs.
Saturn controls 10 4 = 40 yrs.
Jupiter controls 19 3 = 57 yrs
Total years = 180

(b) In Vimshottari also, the same principle appears
to have been followed. The superior planets seem to have
been taken in order, commencing from Mars and then the
inferior planets. In this system, in place of Rahu coming
alone, both nodes are introduced and Kethu comes se cond
to Budha, as Rahu comes second to Mars:-

If the planets are marked (with their periods) on a circle,
it would be interesting to note that,
(i) Mars correctly marks the beginning of a circle;
and (ii) the end or beginning of a nodal period marks the
end or beginning of one of the Dasa circle.
This shows that there has been some orderliness followed
in assigning periods to planets.
Observation No. III : The commencing Nakshatras in the
three systems are respectively Ardra, Ardr and Krittika.
The following Vedic reference are very suggestive :
(1) H${mH$m W_ {demIo Cm_ Vm{Z XodZjm{U ...&
(Krittikas occupy the first place in the circle of
Nakshatras of the Zodiac).
(2) H${mH$mdpZ AmXYrV ...& that and an impartial follower is bound to get confused
i.e., the sacrificial fire should be lit up when the Su is
in the Krittikas.
(3) The gdVmo^ gives H${mH$m the first place among
the nakshatras while reckoning different directions.
All these references tend to point out to the fact that

the Ashtottari and Yogini systems must have come
into existence when the equinox was in Ardra, and the
Vimshottri Dasa system and the Sarvatobhadra etc.,
must have belonged to the age when the equinox was
in Krittikas.
It is, therefore, my honest feeling that the advocates of
all these systems must have in their minds one great rule
to be followed, viz., to assign to Ravi the control of that
Nakshatra, in which the equinox occurs at any time, then
would come the control of the Moon and so on.
Before closing the discussio, I intend to give below,
as an example, the horoscope of one of my friends. I
tried all the systems described above in this case and
could find only two which could be said to explain the
events in a reasonable degree. The first system is the
Vimshottari a pplied to a Nirayana Moon reckoning 2130
ayanamsa and the other the Gouri Jataka as applied to the
Sayana Moon.
The Nirayana Moon is in Magha, the Bhogya being 2 years
9 months 10 days of Kethu. The Sayana Moon is in Virgo
(i.e., Uttara) and the corresponding Bhogya Dasa comes
to be 3 years of Ravi. The table below gives the events
of life and I have written before each event the name of
the Dasa and Antardasa planet according to each system.

I leave it to the learned readers to judge the two systems
and to compare the merits and demerits of both. I have
discussed at length the effect of adopting t his system or
to see differences due to the factors of Ayanamsa, hyleg
and system involved. I request the readers to try the Gouri
Jataka system as applied to a Sayana Moon and prepare
statistical data of results of comparison with the systems
