Course Objective:
The objective of the course is to introduce design, operation and working principles of fundamental
electronic devices and circuits such as diodes, bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), and field-effect transistors
(FETs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):


A student who successfully fulfills the course requirements should be able to

Orally describe the principal, characteristics and working of the p-n junction, the
CLO-1
diode and special purpose diodes and their application in electronic circuits.
CLO-2 Analyze simple diode circuits under DC and AC excitation.
CLO-3 Orally describe the working principal of BJTs and FETs in different configurations
CLO-4 Analyze BJT and FET circuits
Analyze and design simple amplifier circuits using BJT in CE, CC and CB
CLO-5
configurations.

Semiconductor Basics: Atomic Structure. Classification of Matters on the Basis of
Week 1 Semiconductor Theory (Conductors, Insulators, Semiconductor, Energy Bands), Atomic
Structure of Si & Ge. Covalent Bonds. Conduction in Semiconductors (Electrons & Holes
Theory).
Diode: Doping, N-Type and P-Type Semiconductors. The Diode (PN Junction & Depletion
Week 2 & 3 Region). Biasing a Diode (Forward Bias, Reverse Bias). Voltage -Current (V-I) Characteristic
of a Diode. Diode Models (Ideal Diode, Practical Diode, Complete Diode).

Diode Applications: The Basic DC Power Supply, Half- Wave Rectifiers. Full-Wave
Rectifiers - FWR (The Center-Tapped FWR, The Bridge FWR). Power Supply Filters and
