CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Setting
TITLE:

Importance of Spiritual Retreats on Their

Character Development as Perceived

By Divine Light Academys Selected

Grade 10 Students S.Y. 2016 2017

I. INTRODUCTION:
This thesis is about the importance of spiritual retreats on ones
character development as perceived by Divine Light Academys selected Grade 10
students. This chapter discusses the introduction, the research problems, our various
hypotheses, the scope and delimitation and the significance of the study. This will be
the basis of the data that shall be collected in the next chapters.

BACKGROUND:

As retreats are now an annual activity of students, it is important to know if

it truly is necessary for a Christian student to participate in it. The aim of retreats is
usually about changing an individuals character for good or to have realizations on our
lives. An adolescents character is complicated to look at but through the talks and
activities in retreats it may cause changes in a person. Retreats commonly has an
impact in a character of a person since it tackles with religion that acquires a person to
fit the standards of what we call a good character. There may be people, mainly
parents, who debate that retreats have effect on their children because they might or
might not have seen good changes. This is because some parents may have felt that
their money has been wasted as retreats are expensive. This study intends to find out if
there would be good outcomes and that retreats have an importance in a students
character development.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
Main Problem:

The study aims to investigate the importance of spiritual retreats in Divine Light
Academys Selected Grade 10 students development of character during the school
year 2016-2017.

Specific Questions:

Specifically, the study attempts to answer the following questions:

a. Do the selected students consider retreats as an important avenue in developing

one's character? If so, what are the activities during retreat that helped them the
most?
b. How do the selected students observe the core values after retreat?
c. Do the students think that retreat helps them to develop the schools core values
(L.I.G.H.T.)?

III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This study will be beneficial to the students of Divine Light Academy. This
study will play big part in students' responsibility in promoting good Christian life within
the community. The study will be evident on changes on how they relate with their
peers, friends, superiors, and family members.
This study will be beneficial to the parents, school administrator and teachers.
The study will determine whether retreats can actually improve a students character. In
this way, parents and teachers will have less hesitation on putting their child into
retreats.
This study will be beneficial to the future researchers. This will serve as a
reference for other researchers who will conduct other studies along this subject.

IV. A. HYPOTHESIS:
H0: The students do not think that retreats are necessary in terms of development of
character.

H0: The students do not observe the schools core values a week after the retreat.

H0: The students do not think that retreat helps them to develop the schools core
values (L.I.G.H.T.).
B. ASSUMPTION:

The retreat helped the selected Grade 10 students who attended the retreat
tremendously. It helped them enlighten their faith. They felt closer to God and more
positive about themselves and their self-concept. It helped them open up and express
their true feelings better.

The selected Grade 10 students will honestly and seriously answer all the
questions in our questionnaire.

V. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study focuses on the Importance of Retreats to Divine Light Academys 10th
grades development of character during the School Year 2016-2017. The study will
cover the different changes on students character that occurred after the retreat. The
respondents will only be from Divine Light Academy, a private and non-sectarian school
in Las Pias city, with 183 students from Grade 10. The respondents of the study will
compose of 100 randomly selected Grade 10 students, 20 from each section, that have
attended the retreat. They range from ages 14 to 16 and both genders are respondents.
The retreat that will be used as experience would be the one that will occur during
school year 2016-2017. There will be surveys and interviews to be conducted to the
selected respondents a week after their retreat. The result of the study will benefit not
just the students but also the parents and teachers.

The study will only focus on the students of Grade 10 because it is the time
where activities like retreat have a big impact on their way of living. We will only focus
on one level because other high school levels will have different retreat themes. An
additional delimitation is that not all of the respondents will have the same change and
perception as others do. The result of the study should not be looked as the direct
reason and answer to the retreats effect on ones character.

Chapter 2
Review of Related literature

I. RELATED LITERATURE

A. FOREIGN

Foreign Literature

According to Meger 2015) who was a dean and was interviewed for
the article Building character for change, the high school retreat will
encourage students to create a more positive school community by
engaging them in a variety of activities meant to build students
empathy and perspective. It means that retreat has an impact on the
behavior of students as it encourages them to become more ideal
Christians through different activities that connect to their own realization
that bridges to their development or change. Mrs. Meger had also cited
that the retreat had deeply impacted the students and she hope for a
change.

On the other hand, Brian Edmond (2007-Present) stated in the

article of Integration of Retreats, There is a need to apply more
creative thought and energy to the task of grounding the heightened
experience of retreats within everyday reality. Retreats need not to
stray from the lifestyle we are used too since it implies that it will work best
if it is connected to our real lives because students like us would have an
idea on how to apply it. It may be considered as creative since it wont just
focus on our relationship with God but also our own selves. Creative
needs more self-involvement as to one can remember it.

B. LOCAL

Local Literature:

The De La Salle University explained that retreats seek to relate the

personal experiences and aspirations of the students with the Lasallian
founding story and mission. Retreats also hope that the students will be
able to identify possible contributions and personal responses to the
Gospel invitation of building God's Kingdom.
According to them, retreats can help students know themselves
better to have an identity. It enables them to find out who they really are,
their personalities, traits and self-purpose. It paves way for formation of
character and it gives them the chance to talk with God.

Retreat is a sacred act to clear the mind, open the heart and
revitalize the spirit within the confines of the body (Villariba, 2011).

Retreats rebuild the spirit and enlighten the mind. It clears our mind
from worries. It helps students know their essence, values and beliefs.

II. Synthesis and Justification of the Study

All of the articles we found talked about retreat prior to the development of
character of the students who attend. They gave the reason on how this
development of character takes place and what kind of possible changes and
development that could happen to these students. They are also in a positive
light in which it is commonly said that spiritual retreats enlightens the students
who attend in it. These related literature justifies that our study is credible
through giving some positive outcome which are related to the students
character development such as retreats are meant to build empathy,
perspective, enlightenment and to know themselves better like their essence,
value and beliefs.
CHAPTER 3
Methodology
This chapter aims to present the methods and procedures used in our study. The
respondents, selected grade 10 students, the validation of the instruments, data
gathering and statistics used. It is our plan on how to write, present and collect the data
used to solve our research problems.

I. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHOD

This study aims to seek whether retreats have significance in contributing to

developing ones character.

The descriptive method of research will be used in this study. Descriptive

research provides the characteristics, nature, concepts and aspects of an
instance. It is a fact-finding study with adequate and accurate interpretation of
the findings. It describes current situations and conditions since the investigation
is concerned with the present status of the character developed by spiritual
retreats perceived by selected Grade 10 students of Divine Light Academy.

The study focuses if these retreats are important in the development of

our Grade 10 students character. We try to look at the many positive outcomes
that can be connected as importance of such retreats. There are many
investigations to be done right after the retreat we will experience as Grade 10
students in Divine Light Academy. There will be surveys to be conducted to
selected students in our batch and interviews to people who will be benefiting
from this study. The interviews will be from fellow Grade 10 students which will
be selected by the researchers, their parents, their guardians and their teachers.
There will be observations on the student with criteria given. We will check if
there had been positive changes to their character after retreat to know the
importance of this activity. There will not only be one specific importance at the
end of this study but there will be many as long as they are all connected to ones
development of character. It will prove that retreats should be kept as an annual
activity for students in high school.
II. RESEARCH INSTRUMENTATION

Questionnaire is the instrument to be used to collect data is the survey

questionnaire. This is used because it gathers data faster than any method. Besides,
the respondents are the grade 10 students in DLA so they are very literate therefore,
can answer the questions with ease.

Development of the Instruments- After analyzing the previous chapters along

with the main problem with related studies the researchers prepared a questionnaire
which would be ready to answer questions that appear in our study. The researchers
see to it there are enough data to collect in order to cover all the aspects of the
problem and answer all the specific questions. The questions are related to what the
students opinions are what have they learned and what have they realized during
the retreat. It protects the students identity because it makes the person who
answered it to be anonymous.

III. RESPONDENTS AND SAMPLING

The researchers contemplated that the respondents are exclusive to selected

grade 10 students. The researchers decided to select a group of students as their
respondents. This study uses pure random sampling as the researchers will choose
the respondents randomly wherein everyone has an equal chance to be selected. In
the 5 sections of grade 10, the researchers will select 20 respondents. Therefore,
the researchers will have 100 respondents.

IV. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

1: The researchers formulated a questionnaire for the respondents to answer.

2. A cover letter was made to accompany the questionnaire.

3. Both the cover letter and the questionnaire were approved by the thesis teacher, Ms.
Cindy Evangelista and the thesis adviser, Mr. Richard Capulong.

4. The questionnaire was distributed to the selected Grade 10 students for them to
answer.

5. The data gathered were tallied in order to answer the studys specific questions.
CHAPTER 4

students observe Love through showing love for their family and others
and being caring or supportive of others. They observe Integrity by
becoming more responsible. The respondents observe God-
centeredness through praying more than usual and reconciling with God.
The respondents observed Harmony with Nature through being eco-
friendly. There were no actions observed under Total Commitment to
Excellence.

3. Specific Research Question 3: Do the students think that retreat helps them to
develop the schools core values (L.I.G.H.T.)?

The students think that retreat helps them to develop the schools core
values or L.I.G.H.T.
III. RECOMMENDATIONS:
This study serves as a reference or guideline for students, parents, teachers and
future researchers. The researchers would like to recommend this study to:

First, students who wish to know the relevancy of retreat to their own character
development.
Second, to parents who are deliberating whether the expense of retreat is
worth it in connection to the character development of their child.
And last, for teachers who facilitate retreats to know whether their methods are
relevant to the character development of their students and to improve their
program in order for the students to develop the core value of Total
Commitment to Excellence.
This study might help the future researchers in our school and outside, to
complete their own study that may regard retreat as well.

Dear Selected Grade 10 Students,
Greetings!
Please be informed that we, C.E.O., are conducting a research on the
Importance of Spiritual Retreats on their Character Development as perceived by the
Grade 10 students S.Y. 2016-2017. We have formulated a questionnaire to gather data
and information for our thesis which has been approved by our thesis teacher, Ms.
Cindy Evangelista and we would be truly thankful if you can supply the necessary data
needed. Your answers would be necessary and important for our thesis. If you leave it
blank and do not answer it properly, our thesis would be incomplete and erroneous.
Kindly fill-up the questionnaire.

Please be assured that your identity would be completely anonymous and the
information will be treated as confidential.

Thank you for your participation in our thesis. If you wish to have a copy of the
result of our study, you may contact us through e-mail sofiamynet24@yahoo.com,
carmelamante14@yahoo.com, jerichorussel@yahoo.com

Sincerely yours,
10- Solidarity
Almazan, Chandruelle
