1. Concentration
Assume the measuring cylinders below have a volume of 1 litre. Show the volume of pure acid on the measuring cylinder for each concentration.
Top up to the 1 Litre mark with water.

Low concentration of acid Medium concentration of acid High concentration of acid
200 mL/L 400 mL/L 800 mL/L

Lets say the acid is hydrochloric acid. Draw the relative numbers of particles of HCl and water in each measuring cylinder for each concentration.

Low concentration of acid Medium concentration of acid High concentration of acid
200 mL/L 400 mL/L 800 mL/L

Make a general statement about how increasing the concentration of a solution affects reaction rate. Use the Collision Theory to explain why this
happens.

2. Temperature
The beakers below contain the same volume of water. Show what you would observe as the water is heated from 25oC to 100oC.
Low temperature Medium temperature High temperature
o o
25 C 65 C 100oC

Draw the relative velocity of the water particles as the temperature increases.
Low temperature Medium temperature High temperature
o
25 C 65oC 100oC

Make a general statement about how increasing temperature affects reaction rate. Use the Collision Theory to explain why this happens.

3. State of subdivision of materials (size of the particles)
The beakers below contain calcium carbonate in varying states of subdivision. Predict and draw what would be observed when 30mL of 2M hydrochloric
acid is added. The products are _____________________________________________ , ________________________ and ________________________ .

Large chunks eg Calcium carbonate chips Ground up calcium carbonate Finely ground calcium carbonate powder

Draw how the acid particles form around the calcium carbonate pieces to produce the chemical change.
Low temperature Medium temperature High temperature
25oC 65oC 100oC

Make a general statement about how increasing state of subdivision affects reaction rate. Use the Collision Theory to explain why this happens.

4. Use of a catalyst
The flasks below contain hydrogen peroxide and detergent. Predict and draw what would be observed when a catalyst such as yeast is not used and when
it is used. Catalysts are not used up in the chemical reaction. Catalysts help the reaction get started. The products of the reaction are
____________________________ and ____________________________ .

Hydrogen peroxide, detergent and no yeast catalyst Hydrogen peroxide, detergent and added yeast catalyst

Draw how the catalyst may act to help produce the chemical change.

Hydrogen peroxide, detergent and no yeast catalyst Hydrogen peroxide, detergent and added yeast catalyst

Make a general statement about how adding a catalyst affects reaction rate. Use the Collision Theory to explain why this happens.
